BRETHREN HERITAGE
Brethren Beliefs
In a climate of centuries of religious turmoil in Eu r o p e , and especially Germany, Martin Luther nailed hi s 9 5 t he si s to the Cathedral door in 1517. What followe d w a s a flo o d of reactions resulting in the Protestan t Refo rm ation. M ur der, torture, persecution, and contin uous "r eli gious war " f rom 1600-1750. Emerging from thi s turmoi l wer e the thre e St ate Churches: Roman Catholic , Luthera n, an d Calvanists.
The fourth group was the Waldensians, a common peo p l e w h o first appeared in the 14th, 15th, and 16th cent ur ie s. D ur ing the 15th century, a group emerged from th e W ald ensia n s and lived in fear of persecution in Bohem ia a nd M oravi a . These people were known as the Moravin s an d wer e led b y C ount Zinzendorf in the 18th century . Th e Moravi ans late r ca me to America and engaged in mi ssion ary wor k with th e Ameri can Indian. They had a sett lemen t in Gnad enhutten . Schoenbr unn, and Zoar, Ohio (i n the n ortheaster n part o f the state) , under the leader ship o f David Zeisb erger.
In the 16th century, the Hutterites arose from the Ana b a p t ist group in Moravia, Slovakia, and Transylvania. A ft e r 1 0 0 years, they fled to Russian Ukraine for religi ou s f reed om , where they lived for 100 years, then move d t o Ame ric a i n the 1870's.
In the early 16th century, the Reverend Monsignor Me n n o S i mons, a Catholic Priest, became disturbed by th e sl au ght e r of Protestant "heretics" and began to preac h acc ord in g t o his conscience. Gathering quite a group , the y brok e f ro m Rome in 1535 and sought exile. They b ecam e known a s Me nno nites.
In 1793, at Markirch (St. Marie-aux Mines), Ministe r J a c o b Amann caused a division in Mennonites. Those wh o fo ll ow e d Amann were called the "Amish Mennonites" aft er hi m . Th e y resided in Waldeck, Germany. Mennonites we re con st antl y l ooking for a tolerant sovereign who woul d permi t u nrest icte d practice of their religion. They r emaine d devo ted t o thei r faith, even when the authoriti es dema nded ot herwis e. Thei r reputation as excellent fa rmers se rved a s a rea l benefi t since noble and ecclsias tical lan dlord s preffere d them a s conduktorens (lease m anagers) f or the ir estates.
As early as 1652, a Baron Von Venningen, as an age n t f o r t he Kraichgau Knighthood, came to Upper Alsac e t o enli s t con duktorens among the Anabaptists who ha d fle d from S wi tzerla nd. These deserted Anabaptist esta tes ha d been de pop ulate d during the Thirty Year War. Th e Princ e Bishop o f Ba sel an d the Counts of Moempelgar d (Montbel iard) welco med S wiss An abaptists within thei r territorie s, where Men nonit e congreg ations remain tod ay.
The Elector of the Palatinate also cooperated with Men n o n i tes, granting them certain freedoms under the Conce ss i o n o f 1664. However, this war retracted by his succe sso r . T he r eluctant governments accepted religious outs ide r s beca use t heir territories needed people to rebuil d t h e war-tor n cill ages.
When Alsace became part of France, the Zweibrucecken C o u n t s Palatine, owners of the County of Rappolstein, h a d co m e u nder the sovereignity of the "most Christian " Ki ng, L ou is X IV of France, who around 1712 decreed th e exp ulsio n o f th e Anabaptists. Christian III from Zwei brueke n-Birk enfe ld wa s serving as officer, even though t he di d not ag ree w ith th em. Special treatment was sti ll show n to the M ennoni te tena nts of the Zweibruecken-W ittelsba ck family a t tha t time, an d it continued for ge nerations.
Some of the 18th century noble families also showed af f e c t ion toward the Mennonites, as well as other religio u s o ut si ders, because of their own human and moral atti tu de s an d gr anted asylum to them. One such example conc ern s t he Co unt s of Sayn-Wittgenstein, in whose small te rrit or y at th e sou thern edge of the Rothaargebirge in t he 18 t h centur y numero us religious refugees (among the m Amish -M ennonites ) sough t asylum. The Wittgenstein dyn asty wa s un ited in ma rriage b y two French great-grandda ughter s of th e noblema n Pierre d e la Place. He had bee n kille d in th e bloody St . Bartholome w's Traditionally , they fe lt attac hed to Hugue nots, but als o granted asy lum to oth er religi ous, persucut ed people, inc luding th e Amish-Men nonites.
Another reason for the Mennonites settlement in th e a r e a o f Wittgenstein, Germany, was Count of Sayn-Witt gens te in , Co unt Ludwig, who invited the popular reforme d the olo gia n Cas par Olevianus to his court. Count Ludwi g ha d als o stu died w ith Kuther at ERfurt University. On e o f Coun t Ludwig 's succ essors, Count Casimir, while ru lin g at Ber lebeurg f rom 171 2 to 1741, also studied at H all e Universi ty, wher e he met A ugust Hermann Francke, t he o riginator o f the Hal le Orphan H omes and co-founde r of Pi etism unde r Philip Jac ob Spener. H e eagerly foll owed the se social a nd humane ide as. His mothe r, the Cou ntess wid ow Sophy, ne e Zur Lippe-Br ake, who had l ed th e governeme nt for her mi nor son, invite d Lord Hochma n n von Hohena u to work for he r. He, consequen tly, ha d a larg e influen ce on the young C ount Casimir. Lor d Ho chmann was o ne o f the most importan y personalities o f P ietism. He was k n own to have associat ed with the Menno n ites "Kurpfalz" a n d thought much like t he Mennonites c once rning baptism.
The Countess' brother and guardian of her children con s i d e red this "secretarian's" influence quite determina l a n d d em anded that he leave. When the Countess refuse d t o co oper ate , peaceful Hochmann was imprisoned and la te r banis hed . year s later, he returned to Berleburg, wh er e he die d i n 1721. G erhard Tersteegn, the Protestan t hym n writer , vis ited his t omb and dedicated a poem t o him.
Amann's Amish Mennonites, at about the close of th e 1 7 t h c entury, urged a much stricter obedience to th e rul e s an d re gulations originally adopted. Some of th e membe rs hip h ad be come indifferent to the matter of wa shing fe et , avoid anve o f those excommunicated, and ha d a tendenc y t o adop t an occa sional new idea for conven ience, whic h wer e terme d too word ly. Therefore, today w e have the A mish a nd the M ennonites ; and we have them i n America i n conside rable num bers and m any communities.
These people are wuite prominent in Lancaster County , P e n n sylvania. The "Big Valley" of Mifflin County, Pen nsyl va ni a , is also a strong settlement area. A few cam e to A mer ic a b efore William Penn; but the first member s of the m we r e fami lies who settled in what is now Germ antown, P ennsy lv ania, i n 1683, coming here ffrom Crefel d, Germany.
The first known Mennonite meeting house in America w a s b u i lt in Germantown in 1708. From birth to death, th ei r li v e s are ordered by "ritual" to methods which othe r s thin k u ne cessary, or even foolish. But these peopl e d o ti - a nd l ik e it - and prefer it to anything the r es t of the Pr otest an d world has to offer - avoiding eve ryt hing outsid e thei r ow n circle, as they would a plagu e. T hey are a gr oup whi ch se ems to hold their own i n a woul d where aroun d them th ere i s much strife an ddi scord; wh ile amongst th em there i s peac e, pleasure, an d plenty. T he earliest Ami sh Congrega tion i n the Unite d States wa s established alon g North Kil l Creek , Berk s County, Penn sylvania in 1735. T he Indians s ubsequen tl y crowded the n southward, where tod ay they are f irmly ro o ted.
In 1708, in the Village of Schwarzenau, in the prov i n c e o f Wittgenstein in Hesse-Cassel, Germany, eight so u l s me t o n the Eder River. In Donald F. Durnbaugh's boo k , E urope an O rigins of the Brethren, the separatist Jo h n Chri stophe r Ede lmann describes the Schwarzenau Valle y : "It li es one- and-on e half hours from Berelburg i n a pl easant va lley, su rrounde d by delightful hills an d forest s, throug h which ru ns the E der River and othe r cool broo ks...the y must have l ived as i f in a cloiste r in this so litude be cause there we re onlt th e manor an d a few smal l houses t o be seen...Fo r people wh o love d solitude, i t was most de lightful to liv e there."
After much study and taking God and their Bible as t h e i r g uide, these eight souls were baptized by trine im me rs io n an d chose Alexander Mack as their leader. Alexa nde r M ac k wa s born in 1679 at Schriesheim and der Bergs tras se o f P resby terian (Reformed) faith, and he died Fe bruar y 19t h, 1 735. W hen he came to America, Alexander M ack wa s acco mpani ed by h is wife, Anna Margaretha, and t hree so ns, Joh n Vale ntine, J ohannes, and Alexander. Tw o young d aughters , Chris tina an d Anna Maria had died i n Europe. L ike all A nabaptis ts, th e Brethren were wear y of war, per secution , torture ( the rac k, the screw, th e dungeon), an d harassm ent. So the y came t o america i n two groups. I n 1719, twen ty Brethre n familie s emigrat ed under the lea dership of Pe ter Becker , a ministe r fro m the Creyfelt co ngregation. Th ey came i n 1729. Alexan d er Mack, as leade r of about thirt y Brethre n families, sa li ed form Rotterd am, Holland, in t he ship Al len, on Jul y 7th ; "and afte r a tempestuous an d perilous vo yage o f 71 days, " they la nded at Philadelphi a on Septembe r 15 th, 1729.
Nearly everything the Brethren held as belief was dir e c t e d toward an action or practice. being a member of t h e F ra te rnity meant not only believing the truth as th e N ew T est ame nt revealed it, but living it directly. Th ei r convi ciot ns w ere an element of a lifestyle which th e B rethre n belie ved C hrist called for. They ruled the m embe rs' pra ctical r elatio ns with each other, with the c ivi l governme nt, and w ith th e secular society. Their pr acti ced showe d their appl ication s as derived directly f rom t he New Tes tament. H.R . Holsinge r, who was forced t o leav e the churc h in 1882, l ooked bac k on the Brethre n in 190 1 and wrote : "In the firs t place, w hat they bel ieve an d teach may b e comprehended i n the state ment tha t they a ccept the Ne w Testament as thei r creed an d disc ipline. T hat is, the N ewTestament as it is , and no t a s they woul d have it, or a s they understand it , bu t as it r eads. Th ey believe tha t the Book is inspire d b y God, has be en pr eserved by Hi s almighty power, and t r anslated into var io us languages t hrough his direct ins trum entality; that t h e Book means wh at it says, and say s wha t it means, noth in g more and noth ing less, and i s not be a dded to nor ta ken f rom, and wil l suffer no de viations. Tha t is Tunkeri sm, brie fly but ac curately sta ted." The Brethr en were mo re concerne d with t he duty i f the church to asce rtain fr om the New Tes tamen t how th e Christian should liv e and h ow the church sho ul d be th an to do so and to be so . Unif ormity in practic e t ende d to produce consensus on do ctri ne.
Peter Nead wrote in 1834: "I have stated that it i s t h e d u ty of the believer to unite himself to that chu rc h wh ic h ha s no other rule for her government but th e Ne w Test ame nt, n ot in word only, but in deed; for the re ar e man y wh o say th ey have no other rule but the Ne w Testa ment , and y et do no t keep house in the church ag reeabl y to th at bless ed book.. ."
After having said that the New Testament was at th e h e a r t of the matter and Jesus Christ the focus of fai th , t h e Br ethren had much that was important and nothin g t ha t wa s dom inant. This was one of their virtues, fo r the y h ad no thin g out of which to create a fanatical r eligio n. J acob E yle r came with his parents from German y to Phi ladep hia. Fr om t here they settled around York , Pennsylva nia wh ere the y farm ed and pursued other occu pations. Ja cob fo r instanc e, wa s a carpenter. They fi nally moved t o Bedfo rd, Pennsy lvania . He was a member o f The German R eforme d church kno wn at T he Brethern.
