When Thomas was only 5, his mother died. When he was 11 his father was killed in a fall from a building he was working on. He was made a ward of his aunt, Mrs. Patrick Carolan. She placed him in a Catholic boys school. He was very unhappy and ran away. He was picked up and placed in an orphanage.(Home for the Friendless). He was happy there and stayed until he was old enough to be on his own. He left N.Y. and went to Illinois where he worked for a farmer in Tazewell Co. When he was 18 the Civil War started. Thomas enlisted in the 42nd Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry and served his country from July 1861 to 1864. After the war he returned to Ill. and married his sweetheart, Rebecca Isenberg. Also two letters from his brother in law,Thomas mcMahan.Thomas Fay Married Rebecca Isenberg, a Protestant(Methodist), and he converted and remained a Methodist untill he died. The McEvoy family were devout Roman Catholics and were very unhappy about Thomas leaving the church. They urged him many times to come back to N.Y. and to the Catholic Church. To save trouble between himself and Rebecca he never returned or saw any of his people again.

Rebecca and Thomas were married by Rev. Webster and moved to Ridgeway, Osage Co. Kansas, where they farmed 80 acres and lived in a stone house. After many hardships and the death of their baby son, they sold their farm and retd. to Ill. and lived neer grandpa Isenberg. At Manito, Mason Co. Ill. Four of their children were born while they were in kansas.
The 1885 census lists Thomas and Rebecca fay and three children. Laurence 15, Mae Belle 12, and Catherine (Kate) 5 yrs.
Thomas and his son Laurence (14), went to western Neb. and took up a small homestead 12 miles west of Broken Bow. Neb. in Custer Co. They built a small cabin and took Rebecca there and the children there in 1883. Rebecca took one look and said it was too wild for her and the children, so Thomas traded the homestead for a years rental on the Lang place. In 1886 they moved to the Rudolph Rumble place neer Albion Neb. where they lived for many years. In 1907 the Fay family moved to Santa Rosa, Sonoma Co. Ca. acre fruit farm neer Graton. Green Valley Sonoma Co. They lived there the rest of their lives.
When Thomas was only 5, his mother died. When he was 11 his father was killed in a fall from a building he was working on. He was made a ward of his aunt, Mrs. Patrick Carolan. She placed him in a Catholic boys school. He was very unhappy and ran away. He was picked up and placed in an orphanage.(Home for the Friendless). He was happy there and stayed until he was old enough to be on his own. He left N.Y. and went to Illinois where he worked for a farmer in Tazewell Co. When he was 18 the Civil War started. Thomas enlisted in the 42nd Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry and served his country from July 1861 to 1864. After the war he returned to Ill. and married his sweetheart, Rebecca Isenberg. Elsie Fay Tallman and her family There are also copies of letters.from Thomas' teacher and life long friend,Miss Sara Tenant. Also two letters from his brother in law,Thomas mcMahan.Thomas Fay Married Rebecca Isenberg, a Protestant(Methodist), and he converted and remained a Methodist untill he died. The McEvoy family were devout Roman Catholics and were very unhappy about Thomas leaving the church. They urged him many times to come back to N.Y. and to the Catholic Church. To save trouble between himself and Rebecca he never returned or saw any of his people again.
Mrs. Patrick Carolan was Thomas Aunt, Probably his mothers sister.
