T.6N R.17E SEC.34: Feagin Graveyard is unmarked on t h e C o u nty map. It is located several Hun dred yards of f C oun t y Ro ad 43 at a place where you can see the begin nin g o f a n ol d dirt road o off of 43, in a kudzu patch . I t is a bou t a mi le west of Rose Hill, AL.
How Did Rose Hill Get It's Name? (by:Gus Bryan)
The village of Rose Hill is located on the old Thre e N o t c h Trail just few miles southeast of the Conecuh R iv e r a t th e Junction of the Opp-Dozier road. Varied sto ri e s hav e bee n told as to how Rose Hill received it's n am e . One st ory i s that Andrew Jackson gave the plac e a na m e as he pas sed th rough in 1818. Another story i s tha t a n old Negro wo man b y the name of Rose formerl y live d o n a hill near th e presen t stores and people be gan ref erri ng to the place a s Rose Hi ll because of thi s old Neg r o . Still another stor y is tha t a large Dorth y Perkus s (s even sisters) rose bus h formerl y stood nea r the sit e of W idow Colvin's old hous e and tha t the nam e originat ed beca use of this rose bush . Still anot her s tory is tol d d tha t Rose Hill was once ca lled China Hi l l.
It is impossible to establish a date on which the pio n e e r s ettlers moved into Rose Hill community. It has be e n d ef init ely established that white people were livin g i n th e a rea i n the 182 0's. The pioneer settlers cam e fro m Geo rgia , Sout h Carolina, and areas adjacent to t he Ros e Hil l area . No do ubt the Three-Notch Road whic h was bla zed i n 1818 w as use d by some of the first set tlers. I t is pr esumed th at thi s trail was an old India n trail pr obabl y used by th e India ns for hundreds of ye ars previo us t o 1818. One ma y travel t his route from Co lumbus, GA . to P ensacola, Fla. , without cr ossing a stre am that can not eas ily be forded . It is said th at friend ly Indian sc outs gui ded Jackson ov er this trail. I f thi s is true, In dians ha d undoubtedly use d this trail ear l ier. The trai l receive d its name from th e method us e d in m arking it . Three not ches were cut on tr ees or s takes to mar k th e trail. Anoth er route establishe d earl y in the histo r y of the area wa s route crossing Cone cu h River about fi ve m ile s northeas t of Dozier (Bell Bri d ge, used before1 905). T his road le d south and southeas t ov er the road no w known a s Possum T rot through the pr esent R ose Hill pro per, thenc e to Seari ght where it cro ssed the r iver the s econd time. D uring th e early histor y of the comm unity, s ettlers travele d to Pe nsacola, Gre enville, Troy, a nd lat er to Searight t o carr y on thei r annual, or less fre quen t, trading.
The Rose Hill area was covered with a thick growt h o f l o n g leaf pine when the first settler moved into i t. L arg e q ua ntities of this timber were cut, rafted, an d flo ate d dow n t he Conecuh River in the early history o f th e comm unity.
ROSE HILL POST OFFICE
The Rose Hill post office was established on Decem b e r 2 4 , 1855, with Andrew J. Feagin as postmaster. On J u n e 8, 1 85 7, James T. Brady became postmaster, and he w a s f ollowe d b y Jefferson C. Mitchell on November 3,185 9 . Afte r Mitch el l server one year, James T. Brady was a ga in app ointed t h e office on Nov.7, 1860, and he serve d u ntil Oct .9, 1866 , w hen the office was discontinued.
The Rose Hill post office was re-established on Mar c h 2 6 , 1 86, with Elizabeth McLaughlin as postmaster. S h e serv e d unt il Feb. 26, 1874, when it was again discon ti nued. T he n on J une 23rd , of that year (1874), it wa s re -establi she d wit h James K. Thomas as postmaster. Th oma s served un ti l Januar y 17, 1876, when he was replace d b y William N.B ran don. He i n turn was followed by Joh n L . Stewart on Ma y 29 , 1878, an d Henry Smith, April 24 , 18 93. On the 13t h of Ju ne, 1894, t he name was change d to R ose Hill and Al exande r W. N. Carr b ecame postmast er. Car r was followed b y Murdo ck M. Grant o n May 4, 189 9; and W illie C. Grant wh o serve d from Oct. 1 9 . 1901 t o Feb. 28 , 1906 when the po st offic e was disconti nued.
PIONEERS OF ROSE HILL
Richard Feagin came to the community in the 1820's . H e c o n structed a log house on the site Mw here Mrs. M olli e Co lv i n lived in 1950. The Countinghouse containe d th e origi na l s tructures wit h additions. Richard Feag in an d wife w er e bur ied near the site of the old Rose H ill Sc hool, whi c h was lo cated about two hundred yards w est o f the hous e i n which h e lived. In the 1820's Darli ng Dau phin settle d ne ar the sit e where Parker's home bu rned. D onald Jorda n live s on this s ite today. James Dau phin, hi s son, and S .A. Dau phin, his gr andson, lived i n this vic inity durin g the year s that procee ded the Civ il War. Thi s house wa s constructe d d by one of t he thre e Dauphins m entioned ab ove, prior t o 1850. Archibal d Tu bberville , a preacher, se ttled in th e vicinity of Ro s e Hill schoo l in the 1820' s . Jesse Tubbe rville, his s on, c onstructe d a house abou t one and one hal f miles no rth of th e pr p resent site o f Bernice William' s home ab out the yea r 185 0. It is owne d today by Arnold Me rrill . Nothing remai n s of the Tubberv illes house at the pr es ent except a fe w ol d bricks.
