130 27 Oct 1806 Daniel FEEGANS (FEAGANS) and Viole t h i s w i fe of Clermont County, Ohio and Anderson Doniph a n o f Mas o n County. Description: Adjoining lots of Ger ma n To wn, a n d bounded by Vawter, Tabbs, John Kenton ; t o a surve y of l an d laid off for Samuel Thompson an d sol d by him t o Joel J ack son to a survey made for Myer s: the n to John A dams Land.
In 1786 Daniel Feagan's family, John Arnold's fami l y a n d J ohn Kirkpatrick migrated from Virginia down th e O hi o Ri ve r in flat boats, the only way to travel in t hos e ti mes . Th ey made their homes for eight or ten yea rs o n th e Ken tuck y side of the Ohio River, not far fro m Simo n Ken ton' s Stati on, near Limestone, now Maysville , and A ugust a jus t below M aysville.
Daniel Feagan knew Kenton before they left Virgin i a a n d h e warned them on their way down the river to wa tc h f o r Indi an decoys, such as kettles on poles for cam pin g al on g the r iver. In those days the Indians were o n th e warp at h and bro ught sorrow to many pioneer homes.
Captain Feagan was given a Grant of 3000 acres of l a n d f o r his service in the Revolutionary War, 2,000 o n t h e Kent uc ky side of the Ohio and 1000 on the Ohio si d e i n Brown C oun ty, then Clermont County. Hfe made hi s cl eari ng near wh er e Georgetown now stands and died th ere i n 181 5.
Fielding Feagan and four sons came up from Brown Cou n t y i n to Fayette County in 1809, also John Arnold and J o h n Kirk pa trick. These families were the very early pio ne er s in Fa yet te County, and their descendants did no t sto p g oing Wes t un til they reached the Pacific Coast.
The Indian tragedy in Kentucky was near Augusta bo u t t h e y ear 1800. Fielding Feagan and his brother-in-l a w Abso le m Cr aig, Josiah Wood a brother-in-law to Absol e m Crai g an d Corn elius Washburn went on a hunting tri p ab out 1 5 mile s from t he settlement. They made thei r cam p nea r a spring , and on e day while they were out h unting , th e Indians cam e to thei r camp and lay in ambus h unti l the y returned. Cra ig and Fe agan started the fir e, the n Field ing went to th e spring fo r water when he h eard gu nfire, a nd knew what wa s up and sta rted for th e settleme nt, wit h two Indians afte r him. He ou tran th em and reac hed th e settlement where th ey made up a c omp any and star ted fo r the camp. When they a rrived, they f o und Craig ha d bee n scalped and his body thr own acros s the f ire and b adly b urned. The Indians had take n thei r horses, g uns an d all t heir equipment. Absolem Cra ig h ad a fine shou t po uch, an d the powder horn was finish e d in silver.
A few years after the tragedy, two Indians came to Fie l d i n g Feagan's home over on the Ohio side of the River , a n d o n e of them had the shot pouch of Absolem Craig . Fea ga n fo ll owed them and killed one and the other fl ed. H e bur ied t h e Indian on the West bank of White Oa k Cree k abou t one mi l e below Georgetown, then threw th e rifl e of th e Indian in t o the deep water. He kept al l secre t until 1 832 when th e r iver washed the skeleto n up.
The same story is told in the Brown County and Clerm o n t C o unty histories.
Captain Feagan and his sons were drilled by Simon Ke n t o n i n all the traits of war. At another encounter o f F ie ld in g Feagan with and Indian they fought with dir k kni ve s an d F ielding had a scar from his ear to his ch in, wh ic h he c arri ed to his grave.
