General Notes for Child John Ferguson
Among the distinguished citizens of Greenville, S. C., John Ferguson,the subject of this sketch, is a prominent figure. He was borninPickens county C. H., on the 26th of July,1841. He is the son ofjudgeGrimke Ferguson the maiden name of his mother being Jane Mansell.Bothof his parents were natives of Pickens county, B.C., the fatherhavingbeen born in the same house in which John first saw the light.It isworthy of mention that the father lived in this same houseforseventy-five years. It was erected about the year 1790, by James,father of Judge Ferguson who also occupied it fifty-eight years. Hewasborn in county Antrim, Ireland, and emigrated to America withhisparents, James and Mary (Strain) Ferguson, when he was only fouryearsof age. They landed at Charleston and first located at what isknownas Strawberry Ferry, B.C. Prior to the Revolution, however,theyremoved to Laurens county, B.C., and located at Cross Anchor.Thegreat grandparents of John Ferguson spent the remainder of theirlivesin Laurens county, both reaching a ripe old age.Thegreat-grandfather and all of his sons served in the continentalarmythroughout the Revolution. Immediately after the warforindependence, he removed to Pickens county, where he died in1848.Judge Grimke Ferguson, father of John, was born February 7, 1807,andresided, as above stated, seventy five years in the same houseinwhich he was born. On the 16th of June, 1835, he was unitedinmarriage to Jane Mansell born in 18144. She was the daughter ofJamesand Sarah (Thompson) Mansell, the latter of whom was borninGreenville county, some miles south of the city of Greenville,whereshe resided until her marriage. James Mansell was born in London,England, and was left an orphan in his childhood. He was bound out,toa saddler whom, however, he did not like, and at the tender ageofeight years he ran away and embarked on a vessel bound for America.Hewas destitute of money and was consequently compelled to work hiswayon the vessel. He landed at Philadelphia, where he remaineduntilabout seventeen years of age, working at the saddlers' trade. Hethencame to Greenville county, where he was married to Sarah Thompson,andshortly after removed with his wife to Pickensville. Duringtheremainder of his life he followed farming. From Pickensvilleheremoved to a point known as "The Trap," in Pickens county, whenabout1849, he died, his wife surviving him until 1864. The parents ofJohnFerguson had four children of whom he is the youngest. There weretwosons and two daughters, all of whom are now living. Their namesareAnna, James M, Sarah and John. Anna, the eldest, is the wife ofDr.Jesse L Dean, having first been married to Robert Latham, who diedin1855. Dr. Dean is a distinguished physician,residing at Waco,Tex.James M., the second, graduated at Charleston medical college, andatonce took a high position as a physician. He, however, nowdevoteshis attention to farming, his tastes calling him in thatdirection. Heresides near the foot of Pike's Peak, Colo. Sarah, thethird, hasbeen twice married, her first husband being Abner T.Griffin, and hersecond William A. McFall; both are now deceased. Sheresides sevenmiles south of Anderson Court House. The mother of thisfamily diedin 1863, and the father March, 17, 1884. She was a memberof theMethodist Episcopal church, and he a member of the Masonicfraternity.His occupation was that of a farmer. John Ferguson residedon the oldhomestead in Pickens county until he was fourteen years ofage. Hethen entered Thalian academy, better known as Slab Town, inAndersoncounty, remaining in that institution three years. Hesubsequentlybecame a student of Furman university for a single term.In 1860 heentered the law office of Maj. B.F. Perry, of Greenville,under whosedirection he pursued his legal studies for about a year,leaving themto enter the services of the Confederate army. He joinedthe Brookstroop cavalry company, which was a part of the Hamptonlegion. Heserved through the entire war, mostly in the commissary,quartermasterand ordnance departments. April 19, 1865, he was joinedin marriageto Miss Harriet M. Grady, daughter of John Woodfine andLouisa Ward(Johnson) Grady. Miss Grady was first cousin to the lateHenry W.Grady, the distinguished orator and editor of theAtlantaConstitution. The father of Mrs. Ferguson was born in Buncombecounty,N. C., and was the son of Henry and Leah (King) Grady,nativesrespectively of Virginia and North Carolina. Thepaternalgreat-grandfather of Mrs. Ferguson was also a Virginian, hiswife'smaiden name being Samons. Mrs. Ferguson's mother was borninCharleston, B.C., in 1821, and was the daughter of TimothyWardJohnson, a native of New London, Conn. His wife's maiden namewasLouisa Bennett Miller, of Charleston, daughter of John Miller,whosewife was a Miss Bennett. Her mother's maiden name was Borneau.Mrs.Ferguson's father and mother were married in 1840, and hadsevenchildren, three sons and four daughters. Two sons and threedaughtersyet survive. Their respective names are Harriet M., Agnes L.,wife ofJacob P. Miller, of Greenville; Henry C.,who resides on theoldFerguson homestead; William S., a lumber man by occupation and oneofthe aldermen of Greenville; Lillie D., wife of Robert TerrellofHendersonville, N. C.; Jessie, who in her lifetime was the wifeofRobert Allen, of Greenville, and John M., who was accidentlydrownedwhen only seven years of age. The father of this family diedin 1877.He was a lifelong merchant. His widow still survives and is amemberof the Baptist Church. Mr. Ferguson has been a resident ofGreenvilleever since his marriage, and for twenty-four yearssucceeding 1865, helived at the old home of Mrs. Ferguson. Ever sincethe war, Mr.Ferguson has given his attention to merchandising, and hasbeeneminently successful, having become one of the most widelyandfavorably known merchants in the state. Enterprise, uprightness,honesty, and integrity have been the characteristics of hisbusinesscareer. The greater part of his attention has been paid to thegroceryand provision trade. His mammoth establishment is in theFerguson andMiller block, the best known business block in the city.It waserected by Mr. Ferguson and Mr. Jacob P. Miller, hisbrother-in-law,in 1886, they have been partners in business for overtwenty-fouryears. Mr. and Mrs. Ferguson have had eight children:Henry Gradv,Lillie Dean, John James Mansell, Frank, Anna Dean, HattieMay andJanie Louisa, all of whom are living, except Lillie Dean, whodied atthe age of eleven months. Henry Grady Ferguson, the eldest,preparedfor college in Patrick's military academy, remaining therefour years.Then entering Furman university, he graduated at twenty,with firsthonors. He had determined in early boyhood to enter theministry, andfollowing his collegiate course, he entered the SouthernBaptisttheological seminary, of Louisville, KY., from which hegraduated in1890, among the foremost members of his class. He is nowpastor ofthe Baptist church at Waynesboro, Va. He is a young man ofbrightintellect and rare talents. Mrs. Ferguson is a member of theBaptistchurch. Mr. Ferguson is a devoted partisan in the democraticparty,and has reached his ninth degree in the Masonic order. While anactivepolitician, he has persistently refused to be a candidate foroffice,though many offers have been tendered him in that direction. Heis astrict abstainer from the use of spirituous liquors and tobacco,andis one of Greenville's most worthy and honored citizens.[Cyclopediaof Eminent Men....1892]
