General Notes (Husband)
!Parents were James Maxwell and ??? Browne. A tattered newspaper account (no date, no source), titled "Another Pioneer Gone," abstracted by Josephine Williams, 43570 Lake Hughes Rd., Lake Hughes, CA 93532 gives the following: Born March 11, 1795 in So. Carolina, father was James Maxwell ... while still a baby, family moved to Chuach River, NC where James ran a mill. In 1808 Maxwells moved to Indiana Territory, near present Greenville. In 1811 father, James, relocated to Lost River, Orange County. Joseph W. joined Rangers (to quell Indians) ... filed for land, Cave Springs, Indiana. Married, late 1815 to Miss Mary Finley, another pioneer family ... 12 children born 1816 to 1842. Mary died Oct. 1842. In 1851 Joseph W. remarried and had 6 more children. He was a devoted Whig, idolized Henry Clay, later became a Republican. Served as justice of peace in Orange County for many years. Owned 840 acres on Lost River (lost it somehow). In 1866 he moved to Howard County, IN. In 1878 moved to Lawrence, KS to live with Mrs. Lindley and Mrs. Newlin, his daughters by Mary Finley. Was active, read a lot, died in his sleep Jan. 26, 1881.

!Feature article on her written by Clem Thompson, "A Remarkable Life: Aunt Polly Sharpe," published in the Free Press, Mt. Pleasant, IA, 21 July 1904. Article states that John Hancock, signer of Declaration of Independence was her grandfather's uncle. Great grandparents were Clem and Isabelle Hancock (sons - William, John, Clem and Jim) all born in SC. Her grandfather, William, was Revolutionary Soldier under Andrew Jackson, killed in Battle of New Orleans. Mary Heple says "Uncle John" was not the signer of the Declaration of Independence. She also says Willliam was not listed as killed in Battle of New Orleans.

BIO: Henry MOW was 2 years old on the 1850 census, but 13 years on the 1860 census. Death Records at the Board of Health in Fulton Co. give his birth date as 01 June; Ms. NORDQUIST records it as "05 June". (Her source unknown.) The first marriage given here (Fila Ann DAVIS) was assumed when compiler saw this marriage listed among Fulton County marriages. Then upon finding the WFT CD listing, Ms. NORDQUIST's data supported the assumption. The second marriage to Hannah BARNETT is proven by a deed recorded in March, 1884. Henry, Hannah, Henry's brother, Enoch, and William Shoup sold property to John Hissong. Ms. NORDQUIST cites two addtional marriages and seven children for Henry F. MOW.
An administrator's sale listed in a Fulton Co. paper on Jan 30, 1871 names Henry and his mother, Eleanor as executors of his father's estate.
