!First found in Prince Edward County when he bought 430 acres on Vaughan's Creek, 19 August 1765 (Prince Edward DB 3:21); was designated as "of Mont- gomery County," when he sold Prince Edward property, 10 July 1787 (Prince Edward DB 7:297). Bought 165 acres in Montgomery County 24 August 1784 (Montgomery County DB A:332); surveyed 162 acres entered 3 August 1783, on 11 February 1785 (Surveys, p. 220). Served on jury of inquest in Montgomery County in 1785 through 1877 (Order Book 1:256, 272, 288; 4:1788-). Divorced wife Mary (Pettus) sometime prior to 15 January 1800, when son, Dabney brought suit for recovery of slaves (Wythe County DB 2:476-78). Wrote will 15 December 1801 (Wythe County WB 1:202), named wife, Judith, daughter Mary Ammy (Anne?), unborn child; children Esau, William, Rhoda, Margaret, John Pettis. Will proved 9 February 1802. Wilson in "Tinkling Springs," gives 30 January 1743 as birth date of this William Finley. Stout has fused him incorrectly with family of John and Thankful (Doak) Finley. Dabney Pettus will, (Charlotte Co., VA Book 1:407a) names Mary Finley daughter, 1 September 1788. George Dabney will, King Wm. Co., VA, 24 October 1729 names daughter, Mary Pettus (Virginia v. 21, no. 4, Oct-Dec 1977, p. 307-310).

!Probably remained in Wythe County for a while after father's death to administer his estate. 10 November 1805, William Finley of Wythe County, VA appoints Dabney Finley of Christian County, KY his attorney to sell one tract of land in Madison County, KY (Christian County, KY DB A:164). 14 January 1806, John P. Finley of Christian County, KY gives power of attorney to Joseph Barrows of Wythe County, VA to collect legacy from William Finley, Executor and Judith Finley, Executrix (now Judith Holsey wife of Lilvenus(?) Holsey) of William Finley, Sr. decd (Christian Co., KY DB A:162). Purchased his first piece of property in Christian County, KY 15 August 1807 (DB A:353). Wrote will 26 August 1823; proved 3 November 1823 (Christian County, KY WB C:556). 720 acres divided between William A., Betsey and Nancy; Ely, oldest son, received the family business (wheelwright). Birthdate estimated from 1820 cen sus.

!Was given two slaves, "Negro woman Nan," and "Negro Boy Martin," by William Finley 9 September 1794 (Wythe Co., DB 1:220). Not named in father's will, but Newton G. Finley manuscript "Our Fore-Fathers" states that William had 4 sons and 5 daughters.

!Living in Lee County, VA 15 January 1800, when he brought suit against his father, William of Wythe County, for recovery of slaves owned by his mother, Mary Pettus, at the time of her marriage to William Finley. Named as child- ren of William and Mary (Pettus) were Dabney, Rhoda, Margaret, John Pettus and Asa Finley (Wythe County DB 2:376-78). According to Stout, Dabney went to Christian County, KY in 1800; planter with large holdings there and in Saline County, MO; will proved 5/13/1844; left 1000 acres; also held land in Pettis County, MO. Listed in Jillson showing 2987 acres of grants in Christian County between 1799 and 1807 (p. 311-312). Christian County deeds show he purchased another 4416.75 acres plus town lots for $3062.75 and sold 5000.75 acres plus town lots for $9027.75 between 1803 and 1842. More than half his transactions took place after his move to Saline County. Appears he was into land speculation! Found in 1810 census in Christian County (p. 100) near brothers John and Asa (Acy); in Christian County in 1820 (p. 45), near William and John P.; same location in 1830 (p. 52) and John P. (p. 27). Found in 1840 census in Saline County, MO (p. 78). Brutus and Asa on same page. Letters of administration issued to brother Asa, 8 May 1843 (Saline Co. Will Rec. A:68, index 1:72, box 202, CE #2065). Final receipts entered 7 March 1848 (Book D:226).

William Asa Finley first appears on the Sonoma County, CA Great Register in 1879 as a minister, age 37, living in Santa Rosa. In 1888, he is listed as a "clerical teacher," and is registered at least through 1894. In 1892, he is described as 5'8". dark complexion, hazel eyes, and black hair. In the 1890 Business Directory of Sonoma County, he is listed as president of the Santa Rosa Ladies College. Found in Santa Rosa in census records of 1880 (ed 124, sheet 43), 1900 (ed 174, sheet 14) and 1910 (121 0157 0261). Willie C., 18 year old dau- ghter listed in 1900. In 1910, son, Ernest, age 39 is living in household along with Robert A. Latimer, 95 year old father-in-law. California Death Index file #18821 gives date of death as 19 June 1912, San Francisco, CA.
!Record of birth found in original family papers of Ernest L. Finley, Santa Rosa, CA by Sherman Boivin in October 1992. Boivin had been asked by Evert Person, son-in-law of E.L. Finley to sort through family records to identify anything of historical interest. Boivin sent original record to me 20 October 1992. Brother, Newton Gleaves gives birth date as 16 September 1839 in "Our Fore-Fathers." Date of death found in "Press Democrat's 1913 Directory of Santa Rosa, Petaluma and Sonoma County," p. 69 (incorrect)
!Suit was brought against bondsmen, Geo. Ulrich and W.A. Finley, for C.A. Perry, insurance man of Santa Rosa. Perry reportedly collected $616.76 which he failed to turn over (Sonoma Searcher, SCGS, vol. 21, no. 3, March 1994, p. 32 - from Sebastopol Times, 28 August 1895).

In the 1890 Business Directory of Sonoma County (CA), she is listed as a ladies principal in the Santa Rosa Ladies College.
