Samuel Magruder Thrift was a native of Fairfax Co., Va . T h e Thrift family were originally from England, and ca me t o A merica prior to the Revolutionary War. The grand fathe r, C harles Thrift, a soldier in that memorable strug gle fo r ind ependence.
Samuel M. Thrift moved to Kentucky in 1821, and sett l e d in Christian Co, where he remained until 1831 when h e r em oved to Illinois, and settled in St. Clair Co. He d ie d i n Washington Co., Ill., Sept. 3, 1872.
He married Sarah (Fleming) Cowan, She was a nativ e o f S outh Carolina. By this marriage there were eight c hild ren , six daughters and two sons. Two of the childre n hav e sur vived the parents - Andrew J. and Elvina D.

Mrs. Sallie Fleming Turner
Expires Following Illness
Of Ten Days Duration
Taken suddenly ill ten days ago. Mrs. Sallie Fleming T urner died at 7:30 o'clock this morning at the resi- denc e of her sister, Mrs. .Bernard Hale. Those at her bedside h ad felt that she was-improving and that her recovery migh t be expected. There was a sudden change for the worse ea rly today and her death came as a great shock not only to t he immediate family but to a wide circle of friends. Mrs. T urner was born Floyd county - this is incorrect and it no w has written over it Spartanburg, SC- but had lived in Rom e for twenty years. Her husband died twenty-two years ago . She is survived by her two sons, Donald and Walter.
She was attacked a week ago last Sunday while-she wa s preparing to attend church, with a stroke resemb- ling ap poplexy. She was in a pre- carious condition for severa l days after that time but recently had appear- ed to be im proving until her sudden death this morning. Mrs. Turner wa s held in the highest esteem by all who hr.ew her and new s ot her death caus- ed widespread sorrow.
Mrs. Turner was forty-five years of age. The funera l will take place to- morrow afternoon at three o'clock f rom the residence ot Mr. Bernard Hale. She bad long bee n a member of the first Methodist church and was active I n th church life of that body and of the city. The burial w ill take place in Myrtle Hill cemetery where her husband an d little daughter are also buried.
