General Notes (Husband)
One of the most enterprising and successful business men o f Fairfield county, S. C., is the Hon. George H. McMaster , president of the Winnsborough National bank. Mr. McMaste r is a South Carolinian by birth, having been born in Fairf ield county, April 27, 1828, and is the son of John and Rac hel ( Buchanan) McMaster. The father was born in Ireland, t he son of Hugh McMaster, also a native of Ireland.
Hugh McMaster emigrated to America with his two brother s some time prior to the Revolutionary war, and they serve d in the patriot army during that war. After the war had be en brought to a successful close by the American army, Hug h returned to Ireland and married, the issue being John, th e father of our subject. Hugh McMaster befriended a ministe r of a dissenting church, Rev. McLinney, a Covenanter, an d was obliged to once more leave his native land and seek r efuge in the United States, which he did, accompanied by th e persecuted clergyman; their intention being to establis h the church of their choice in the new world; but the deat h of Mr. McMaster at sea put a blight on the project. Mr. M cLinney reached this country in safety and immediately proc eeded to South Carolina. and at Winnsborough established hi s church. Subsequently the widow of Hugh McMaster left Irel and with her son John and sought a more congenial home in t his country. She first located in Abbeville county, S. C. , but later removed to Winnsborough, where her boy was rear ed and spent the remainder of his life. In early life he wa s engaged in merchandising, but subsequently became proprie tor of a hotel, and at this time was made postmaster of Win nsborough, which office he held for forty years. He died i n I864, at the age of seventy-seven years, leaving five son s and two daughters. His widow survived him until I883, whe n she died, aged ninety years. Their son, George, was reare d in Winnsborough, where he obtained his early schooling. I n December, l850, he was graduated from the South Carolin a college, and then began teaching school. Four years late r he visited Europe, going to England. Ireland, Scotland Fr ance, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Holland and Belgium. H e returned home in 1855, was elected an assistant professo r at Mount Zion college, at Winnsborough, and in the same y ear was married to Miss Mary E. Flenniken, a daughter of th e Rev. Warren Flenniken. In 1874 this estimable lady was st ricken by death, four children being left to mourn her loss . In 1876 Mr. McMaster was so happy as to form a marriage a lliance with Miss Louisa Gregg, daughter of Dr. R. Gregg, o f Marion county, S. C., and seven children have been born t o them. Mr. McMaster began his mercantile career in 1856, a s a general merchant. During the Civil war he espoused th e cause of his people, and was placed in charge of the sold ier's home and hospital bureau, located at Richmond, Va. H e has always been a staunch democrat, and in I880 was elect ed to the house of representatives of South Carolina, and r emained as a member of that body during the years 1881-2-3- 4. At the organization of the Winnsborough National bank i n 1873, Mr. McMaster took an active part in perfecting it s formation, and was elected vice-president, and is now th e only surviving original director of that institution. Sin ce l885 he has been its president. Both he and family are a ctive and prominent members of the Associate Reform Presbyt erian church, and he is recognized as one of the substantia l men of the community. He has made himself noted for his p ublic spirit, and throughout his life he unceasingly labore d for the advancement of the state and the community in whi ch he lived. He was a great advocate of the building of rai lroads, and through his efforts Fairfield county voted $200 ,000 to two proposed roads through the county. Mr. McMaste r was elected president of these two proposed roads by thei r incorporators. Mr. McMaster was always to be found on th e side of measures looking to the internal improvement of t he country.
