General Notes (Husband)
H. B. Floyd, Sr., was born in Nichols, SC, but after his father was killed by a train in 1869, his mother moved with him and his six living siblings to the area of SC then called Bucks Swamp near the present location of Floyd Dale, SC, which would be founded by him in later years. His mother was the daughter of Reading Roberts who owned a very great deal of property on both sides of the swamp, and he gave her hundreds of acres of land in and around the present community of Floyd Dale. They weathered the traumatic years of reconstruction and occupation by the Federals, and prospered. Mr. Bascom, as he became known farmed his portion of the land and opened a mercantile establishment and served the area with a cotton gin. He was instrumental in bringing the railroad through the village and a post office was established with the name Floyd Dale, SC. He continued his store there and opened branches in Dillon, SC and Mullins, SC. He was dedicated to Mt. Andrew Methodist Church there and became master of the Masonic Lodge. He was a remarkable man in many ways with many real friends who loved and respected him for his ability, generosity and integrity.
General Notes (Wife)
Harriett Stackhouse was known all of her life as "Hattie". Her father and his brothers were confederate soldiers. Her mother's brothers were also in the Confederate Army, one of them killed at Petersburg. It is no surprise that most of her childhood memories were colored by the Civil War. She bitterly remembered the reconstruction years and the occupation of the U.S. Army. Some pieces of furniture from the Stackhouse home was confiscated by the garrison commander in Marion, SC for use in his offices. She was a very petite woman, but was as spunky as they come. She went to Converse College for Women in Spartanburg, SC, and was one of their earliest graduates. After she married Bascom Floyd, Sr., they lived in Floyd Dale, SC, and she dedicated herself to her family, the church, her farm workers and the community of Floyd Dale. She cared for the sick and the needy and kept one of the most productive homesteads in the area. Almost everything they needed came from the farm and she was a prime mover in gardening, butchering, preserving, planting and harvesting. She sewed, cooked, worked in the fields and was vibrant and alert almost to the end of her ninety years. When the village school was approved she agreed to board the single female teachers who otherwise would have been unable to come there. [I lived in her home from about age two til twelve, and she is said to have taken me when I was almost hopeless with diphtheria, nursing me hight and day through the worst of that child-killing disease. HBF]
General Notes for Child Henry Bascom Floyd Jr
Henry B. Floyd, Jr., called "Bat", attended Wofford College in Spartinburg, S.C., before attending Officer's Candidate School in the U.S. Army in 1917. After basic training at Ft. Oglethorpe, Georgia, he was sent to the school for Quartermaster Corp officers in Montana. He went to France with the AEF , and returned in 1918. He was Postmaster in Floyd Dale, S.C. for about thirty years, ran a grocery store and farmed there for most of his life. He was a Mason and became Worshipful Master of Acacia Lodge 169 in Floyd Dale. He served a period of years as a trustee of the local school board. He was a life long member of Mt. Andrew Methodist Church in Floyd Dale which had been founded by his grandmother, Zilpha Roberts Floyd, and other members of her family and her children.

General Notes for Child Richard Sanders Floyd
Richard was called Dick or Dickie. At age fifteen, he was killed with R. B. Hulon when they were struck by a car driven by a Mr. Walter Jackson near old Campbell's Bridge on the Little Pee Dee River which is just north of the village of Floyd Dale, SC. It was just after dusk when the accident happened and they were riding double on the right side of the road when hit. They died instantly. No fault nor charges were considered. Dick had been hit before by a car. When he and sister Marjorie and brother Bascom were walking along a dirt road at dusk, a speeding car came down the road from in front of them. Dick was in the position nearest the road and the driver gave no room to the children - Dick was hit and thrown far down the road. Marjorie ran to their nearby store for their daddy, Bat, who came and found the boy uncontious. Mr. Bat sped over the 1932 roads to Florence, SC, about 30 miles away. Dick had many broken bones and extensive internal injuries, but after about six weeks he was going as strong as ever. He became an expert marksman with shotgun and rifle and was a good fisherman. He was outgoing and gregarious with many true friends.
General Notes for Child Malcolm Stafford Floyd
Malcolm was a radiologist. He did his premed at the Citadel where he was first in his class at the end of his junior year. He was accepted at the Medical College of SC without completing his final year of premed. After receiving his MD, he went into the US Air Force and completed several residencies, one of which was at Mayo Clinic in Minneapolis. He Also spent some time in the Air Force at San Antonio, Texas. He was a very successful physician, but had serious family and personal problems which apparently were unbearable. He shot himself while at home in Vincennes, IN in March, 1985. His widow had become a paraplegic in a car wreck in about 1980. His oldest son, John, had received massive head injuries in another car wreck in about 1970. Malcolm had, himself, undergone extensive open heart surgery about 1982. HBF3.
