From the notes of M. Fenimore: Last residence: OR 97217 Individual: Clarence was called "Tom" during his life. Ted Beach wrote that Tom signed his name as C. T . Hayes. An uncle called him Tom Chit when he was learning to walk. Later on the name Chit wa s dropped. He did not like to be called Clarence and everyone called him Tom. Clarence was al ways known as "Tom". His brother Bill started calling him "Tom Chit", after a little bird, w hen he was just a baby. The name stuck and he was always known as Tom. He was the only one o f the twelve children not to have a middle name, and he always signed his name as C. T. Hayes .
