A White apprentice who worked briefly for Thomas Jefferson at Monticello. Said to be the father of Joe Fossett but Thomas Jefferson was possibly the real father.

One of the most important slaves of Thomas Jefferson and freed in Thomas Jefferson's will. On August 3, 1806, Joe Fossett was arrested on the White House lawn in Washington DC, having been caught sneaking out of the White House after spending the night there with his wife, Edy, who was also a slave of President Thomas Jefferson.

Lerone Bennett, "Thomas Jefferson's Negro Grandchildren," Ebony, X (November 1954), 78-80 reports that descendants of Joe Fossett say that he was the son of Thomas Jefferson, not of William Fossett.
