PAUL MOORE-As deputy clerk of court until 1909 and since t hat time as clerk of court, Paul Moore has served well th e judicial system of Lancaster County. A staunch Democrat , he has been six times elected on his party's ticket to th e office of clerk, which he now holds; and his labors hav e been of distinct value to his region of South Carolina an d to local institutions and people. Mr. Moore was born in Y ork County, on March 19, son of William A. and Nancy Caroli ne (Ross] Moore. His father, a native of York County, bor n in 1821, was a lawyer in Lancaster until his death in 187 8; he was also a veteran of the War Between the States, i n which he served in the Army of the Confederacy. The mothe r, born in York County in 1832, died in 1916. They had eigh t children, five of whom are living at the time of writing . The family is of Scotch-Irish descent, this branch of th e Moore line having traced its lineage back to James Moore , who was born at Drogheda, Ireland.
In the schools of Lancaster and at Kings Mountain milit ary Institute in York, Paul Moore, of this review, receive d his early formal education. Then, for a time, he worked i n local mercantile establishments, meanwhile making up hi s mind to study law. Going ahead with his plans, he was adm itted to the bar of South Carolina in 1881 and for severa l years thereafter practiced in Lancaster. For a time, too , he was associated with his brother, Ernest Moore, in lega l work under the firm name of Moore and Moore. After a fe w years he became engaged in farming in Lancaster County, s o continuing until in 1893 he became deputy clerk of cour t in Lancaster. Later he resigned. and spent four years i n Charleston in the office of the United States deputy mar shal, assisting John P. Hunter. A similar position he hel d in Charleston for a short period, serving there, too, und er the United States marshal, Lasen D. Milton. Afterward h e resigned and, coming to Lancaster, was made cashier of th e Farmers' Bank and Mercantile Company, which later came t o be known as the Lancaster Mercantile Company. That work h e carried on till 1902, when he left it to become deputy cl erk of court in Lancaster. So serving until 1909, he was a ppointed that year clerk of court, to succeed the previou s holder of that office who had died. This post he has hel d continuously since that year, having been six times elect ed. Along with his professional and civic duties, Mr. Moo re is a farmer, whose agricultural interests have made hi m known in still another realm. He has always been deeply c oncerned, too, with the civic and social affairs of his co mmunity, being a member of the Ancient Free Masons and acti ve in its work. He is a member, in the Masonic Order, of Ja ckson Lodge, No. 53; Chester Commandery, Knights Templar; H ejaz Temple, Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shri ne; and other bodies. In the Presbyterian Church, with whic h he has long been associated in the religious world, he i s an elder. In all his work and his varied affiliations, Mr . Moore has proven his abilities and his breadth of civic i nterests; and his labors have won for him the hearty estee m and regard of those whose privilege it has been to be ass ociated with him in business, professional, civic or socia l life.
Paul Moore married, in 1881, Anna Foster, of Lancaster , daughter of Captain J. C. and Margaret (Hood) Foster. B y this marriage there have been six children: I. John F ., who is a lieutenant colonel and disbursing officer in Co lumbia, a member of the United States Army. 2. Blanche, wh o became the wife of Samuel Paul, of Beaufort. 3. Paul Ross , a civil engineer and district engineer for the State high way department at Florence. 4. Margaret. 5. William Cantzon , of Augusta, Georgia. 6. Joseph Henry, a civil engineer i n Lancaster. There have also been six grandchildren: Ann Pa ul; Paul Moore Paul; Samuel Paul, Jr.; Henry Cantzon Paul ; Helen Moore, who died in 1931; and Nancy Foster Moore.

John Charles Foster, grandfather of Mrs. Rachel Cantzon , was from the Scottish borders, and allied with the Dunlop s of Ayr, and Kirkland Heights, and also the Fenwick and Ph ilpot families. His son, Henry Foster, of South Carolina, t he immigrant, came, first, to Pennsylvania, and there marri ed Ann Dunlop (or Dunlap, as it is called in South Carolina ), whose ancestry dated from a younger son of Dunlop of Dun lop, Scotland, who came to Lancaster County, PA., in the re ign of George II, and then moved to South Carolina, there n aming a county Lancaster, also. Henry Foster served in th e Revolution as corporal, 1778, Capt. George Liddell's comp any, Third Regiment South Carolina Continental troops., Col . William Thompson.
