John Foster was a farmer and ran a mill on the Catawba Riv er in Lancaster County, South Carolina. He married Catherin e Tirzah, who died young without issue, then married his fi rst cousin, Ann Kelsey Cantzon. They had eight children, si x of whom died young. John Foster agonized over these death s and studied medicine, although he never trained formall y or became a physician. He did act as a lay-doctor for th e Waxhaws community.
