General Notes (Husband)

[bonnie arnold's dodson gedcom.ged]

Book compiled by Judge Grace McKnight, 303 S. Mabel St., Ferris, TX 75125 contains the Brown family history: "Descendent of Thomas Brokenberry Brown", copyright 1983, all rights reserved. Hartys' Printing (of Ferres, TX?).

Information confirmed by Carol Colleen Crowley, 210 Benton Street, Richmond, MO 64085-1416 July 19, 1999 by letter.

Took care of invalid wife for 30 years +.

The Thomas B. Brown family Bible, in 1975, was in the possession of Mrs. Clara Jane Ottmann Manning, 612 East Lexington, Richmond, MO. The Bible was printed in 1833 in Philadelphia, PA. Facsimile of the birth, death and marriage records are in the book by Judge McKnight on pages 2a and 2b.

"The Browns lived in Rutherford Co., TN according to the 1810 census. The adjacent family was Thomas Ashley - probably husband of Frances (Franky) Allison, sister of Elizabeth Allison. Also, nearby was the family of James Allison, a brother of Elizabeth.

The Garrison Fork Baptist Church, Bedford Co. near Shelbyville, TN shows Thomas B. Brown was received by letter of dismission Nov. 4, 1811. They were received back by letter in Apr. 1813. In Aug. 1829 they were again granted letters of dismission. This information from Rex Shelton, Clerk, by letter dated Jan. 7, 1975 after he examined the church records.

The Browns left Tennessee by wagon and arrived in Nov. 1829 in Carroll Co., Mo. By 1830 they were in Ray Co. Mo. where about 1851 he entered 80 acres of Government land 6 miles west of Richmond, Mo. Thomas B. and Elizabeth Allison Brown united with the North Bluffton Baptist Church in Ray Co. Mo. in Aug. 1830. This church changed its name to New Hope Baptist Church in April 1846 and later moved to 5 miles southwest of Richmond, Mo. Thomas B. Brown was made a Deacon. He was licensed to preach in July 1855.

Thomas B. Brown was a private in Captain James C. Neill's Company, 1 Batt'n. 3 Reg't Tennessee Militia Infantry commanded by Major William Woodfolk - War of 1812. He was mustered into service Sept. 20, 1814, and discharged April 10, 1815, serving 6 months, 21 days at pay of $8 per month, total pay $53.60, according to the Company Pay Roll. He was honorably discharged at Fayetteville, Tn. April 10, 1815 by James C. Neill, Capt. Tn. Militia, after serving 6 months 20 days. See Facsimile - page 3a.

On 19 Nov. 1850, Thomas B. Brown gave an affidavit stating he was in the "war of the United States with the Creek Indians pending" in 1814, and that he was drafted at Fayetteville, Tn. 20 Sep. 1814 for 6 mos. and served 6 mos. and 20 days and was discharged at Fayetteville, Tn. on 10 April 1815. He requested bounty land under Act of Sept. 28, 1850. Warrant 11838 for 80 acres was granted July 17, 1851.

On 29 May 1855, another affidavit stated "in the War with Great Britain declared by the United States on the 18th day of June 1812". Previously he had applied for bounty land under the Act of Sept. 28, 1850 and received Warrant No. 11838 for 80 acres, which he had legally disposed of and could not return. He requested bounty land under the Act of 3 Mar. 1855.

On 1 Apr. 1871 Thomas B. Brown made application for pension stating he m. Malinda Conyers in Ray Co. Mo. on 4 April 1852 (differs from Bible record). He stated he was drafted a private in Capt. James C. Neill's Co. of Tennessee Militia in Bedford Co. Tn. ca. 15 May 1812 and honorably discharged in Bedford Co. Tn. ca. 5 Dec. 1212; went from Fayetteville, Tn. to Fort Jackson, Indian Territory and then to Fort Decatur in Indian Territory until fall when returned home and was discharged, serving six months and 20 days. $8 monthly pension was granted 21 Mar. 1872 to commence Feb. 14, 1871, under Act of 14 Feb. 1871. Pension No. 14243. Thomas B. Brown was 83 yrs. old when application was made and apparently confused as to dates of service as they differ from pay roll; also note discrepency in marriage date. These differences are understandable at his age.

Thomas B. Brown purchased a 15 acre tract from John Sutton in Second Dist. in Rutherford Co. Tn. on a branch of Stones River.

Thomas B. Brown was granted 2 acres in Second District in Rutherford Co. Tn. on waters of the Stones River by Grant No. 19901 dated 21 Aug. 1823 and recorded 17 Oct. 1823. This was part of Certif. No. 4484 dated 18 Mar. 1822 issued by Register of West Tennessee to Robert P. Harrison for 62 acres and entered 1 Aug. 1822 by No. 12114; 2 acres being assigned to Thomas B. Brown. See Rutherford Co. Landgrant Book X U011, Page 107.

He was also granted 35 acres in Second District in Bedford County, Tn. on waters of Noah's Fork of Duck River by Grant No. 19916 dated 22 Aug. 1823 and recorded 17 Oct. 1823. It was part of Warrant No. 566 dated 24 June 1784 issued to John Whitaker for 1200 acres by John Armstrong, Entry Officer of Claims for the North Carolina Western Lands and entered 9 Jun. 1814 by No. 6424. Thomas B. Brown was assignee of said John Whitaker. This property was adjacent to Rice Hughes' 25 acre survey in Second District of Bedford County on a branch of Stones River. See Bedford Co. Landgrant Book X U011, p. 106.

Thomas B. Brown purchased 72 acres for 12-1/2 cents per acre and entered 1 July 1;824 from the State of Tennessee (Rutherford Co.) on survey of 26 May 1825 on waters of the West Fork of Stones River near Hoovers Gap. Grant No. 3311 dated 13 Jun. 1826. See Rutherford Co. Landgrant Book 4, page 683.

He also purchased 50 acres for 12-1/2 cents per acre and entered 22 Oct. 1824, from State of Tennessee (Rutherford Co.) on head waters of the West Fork of Stones River. Grant No. 3312 dated 13 Jun. 1826. See Rutherford Co. Landgrant Book 4, p 684.

Thomas Brokenberry Brown of Ray Co. Mo. purchased 43-80/100 acres, being NE 1/4 NW 1/4 of Sec. 30, Tn. 54, Range 27 (North of Mo. River) under Act of Congress 24 April 1820 for sale of Public Lands as shown by Certificate No. 4130 signed 1 April 1837 by President Martin Van Buren by Acting Recorder of the General Land Office. The sale was made at Lexington, Mo. See copy on p.3b. The original certificate was in possession of Mrs. Everett Lee Brown (B-603s) Kansas City, Mo. in 1981.

Thomas B. Brown of Ray Co. Mo. purchased 40 acres of Public Lands, being SW 1/4 SE 1/4 Sec. 5, Tn.51 (North of Mo. River), Range 28, W. of 5th principal meridian. Certificate 8987 was signed 7 Sept. 1838 by President Martin Van Buren by Acting Recorder of the General Land Office. Sale made at Lexington, Mo.

The Will of Thomas B. Brown was dated 29 April 1865 and recorded 19 Sept. 1872 in the Common Pleas Court of Ray Co. at Richmond, Mo. The witnesses were J.W. Shotwell and D. P. Whitmer. His son William Brown was named as Executor. Only his wife, Malinda E. Conyers and deceased daughter, Elizabeth Brown Brookshier, were named in the will. The estate was to be divided among all the heirs according to the law of descents and distributions of the State of Missouri.

From Andreas' History of the State of Nebraska, published by Chicago: the Western Historical Company, A.T. Andreas, Proprietor in 1882 - Butler County - Part 7

"JAMES D. BROWN", Farmer, Section 23, Town 14, Range 4 east, P.O. Brainard; came to Nebraska in 1865, and located on the place where he now lives May 20, and was the first settler in Oak Creek Precinct. Was also the first Postmaster, establishing the Urban Post Office; was also one of the original members of the Baptist Church society in that locality, and has been one of its most active workers since. When Mr. Brown settled on his place, his nearest point to a mill was at Ashland, Saunders County, a distance of forty miles, and also his blacksmithing done. Was born in Bedford County, Tenn., December 15, 1822, his parents moving to Missouri in 1829, where he resided until he came to Nebraska. Was married, in 1841, to Miss Phoebe L. Crawley, who was born in Ray County, MO., by whom he has thirteen children, ten of whom are now living."

Is believed to have been quite wealthy (info from June Brown Holder) as he gave each of his children 80 acres when they married. The old house and barn (Urban, Brainard, Butler County, NE) was built in 1865 and gg grandfather also gave land for the church and school that is about 1/4 mile South of the cemetary (burned down in the 1930s according to local folks in Brainard 1978). http://www.ukans.edu/carrie/kancoll/andreas_ne/hon_tabl.html

This internet sight has, in it's Kansas Collection Books, HISTORY OF THE STATE OF NEBRASKA, Illustrated, Chicago: The Western Historical Company, A.T. Andreas, Proprietor. 1822.

This book "contains a full account of its growth from an uninhabited territory to a wealthy and important state; of its early settlements; its rapid increase in population, and the marvellous development of its great natural resources. Also an extended description of its Counties, Cities, Town and Villages. Their advantages, industries, manufactures and commerce; Biographical sketches, portraits of prominent men and early settlers; views of residences and business blocks, cities and towns. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- ----------------------------------------------------------- Letter from Almeda June (Brown) Holder, dated February 7, 1979:

In 1864 or early 1865, James D. Brown organized a wagon train with a party consisting of, but not limited to: James D. Brown, his wife Phoebe Lee (Crowley) Brown, and a married daughter Son-in-law Crid Hatchett, his wife Julia B(rown) Hatchett Jeremiah (Jerry) Crowley and family Robert E. Lee family (decendents of General Robert E. Lee) - cousins to Crowleys A negro man and woman (servants of the Browns)

Anna Riggs remembered these servants. She said when they grew quite old and the family was all raised and gone, they wanted to go back to their southland. Grnadfather took them and bought them a home and saw them comfortably situated.

The wagon train was destined for the northwest, probably Oregon. It was May 1865 when they camped in Butler County, NE. Because of sickness in their group, they stayed over and learned they could acquire land there. James Brown selected land in Sec 23, Oak Creek Township. Upon settling on the above land, he immediately build a home (the one that is still there). Then, near-by, on Oak Creek, south and east of the house, south of the cemetary) he supervised the building of a church and school combined. It is still standing. He and his wife were devout Christians, their church belief was of the Primative Baptist, often called Hard Shelled Baptist. They strived to raise their families in a very conservative, religious way. He did not depend on farm crops altogether. He soon managed to get a grist mill where he could grind corn into meal. He also had a small grocery store on the premises. He also succeeded in getting a post office, which was named Urban, NE. When the railroad was built through that part of the country, the town of Brainard was established, doing away with the Urban Post Office.

It became necessary to have a cemetary when there was a death in the family. James picked out a spot on a knoll above Oak Creek. Aunt Nellie said she was told only Browns and family connections are laid there. I don't know if this is correct or not.

James acquired quite a large acreage of land and as a son or daughter married, he gave them 80 acres and helped them build a huse, they were all built on the same plan as his huse and painted white. They ware all two sotried, with bedrooms upstairs. The original house was sold in the early 1900s.

My grandfather inherited the land from his father, then sold it in 1892 to come to Oklahoma so he could have more land.

This part of the story Aunt Nellie wrote to me recently (from page 5 on). I find she gets some things mixed up, but not bad for being 86 years old. She wrote a story of my grandfather and grandmother that she completed in 1966. She called the wagon party "The Oregon Trail Blaziers". I believe that is the name of the book of family history.

I will try to get the address of Chester Brown of Denver, CO. He is also a cousin. He would have to be getting on up in years as his mother was 70 years old when she passed away in 1972.
