I n 69 B.C. he helped P OMPEY to obta in the sup reme co mmand fo r the war in th e East. He himse lf returne d to Rom e from Spa in in 68 B. Hiram Maltbie isn't spoken of much in the family. I bel i e v e in his latter years he suffered from "Senile Dement i a " no w known as alzheimers disease. It 's unfortunat e th a t ment al illnesses were looked down upon in those d ays a n d stil l are to a certain extent. His wife, Mary, w as Ger ma n. Th e 1870 New York Census has the following i nformat ion:

After an infant son by Julia perished in 6 BC, Tiberi u s w e n t intovoluntary exile, leaving Jul ia in Rome. Fi na ll y Au gu stus discovered howJulia was behaving. Afte r thr eat enin g he r with dea th, he banished her toPandat aria , an i slan d of f the coast of Campania, in 2 Bc. Sh e wa s later m ove d to Rh egium.
