When Augustus Casear (her father) learned of her adult e r i e s, heconsidered her execution, refu sed to see visi to r s f o r some time, thenforbid Julia from drinking win e o r e njo y a ny other lux ury during herexile; denied al l ma le c ompa ny , whether free or servile. Julia was kept o n a pri s on is lan d for five years. While in exile, Jul i a gave birt h to a chil d which Augustus refuse d to all o w to be acknow ledge d or re ared. When her name came u p i n conversation , August us woul d sometimes quotefrom t he I liad: "Ah, neve r to hav e married , and childless t o hav e died!" --------- ------- T he Roman e mperor August us' on ly child, whose sca ndalous be havioureven tually ca used hi m to ex ile her.
Julia's mother was Scribonia, who was divorced by Aug u s t u s when the childwas a few days old . Julia was brou g h t u p s trictly, her every word andaction being watche d . Af te r a br ief marria ge to Marcus Marcellus, whodie d i n 2 3 BC , Juli a wedded Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa, Augu stus ' c h iefl ieutena nt, in 21 BC. Their two eldest son s wer e ado pted b y Augustu s in17 BC and given th e name s Gaiu s and L ucius C aesar. Jul ia had a third son,Agripp a Postu mus, an d two dau ghters, J u lia and Agrippina.
With Agrippa's death in 12 BC, Augustus' wife, Livi a , w a s a ble toconvince him to favour her o wn sons b y a f orm e r marr iage, Tiberius andDrusus, as possible su ccesso rs ; an d Augus tus force d Tiberius to divorcehis w ife an d ma rry J ulia i n 11 BC. It was an unwanted and un happyma rria g e fo r both o f them. Julia began to lea d a promiscu ous l ife, he radulteri es becoming common kn o wledge in Ro me.
After an infant son by Julia perished in 6 BC, Tiberi u s w e n t intovoluntary exile, leaving Jul ia in Rome. Fi na ll y Au gu stus discovered howJulia was behaving. Julia's guilt is not doubted, but she was a witty and i n t e l ligent womanand was loved by the p eople. Augustu s sh ow e d h er no mercy, however, calling her a "disease i n m y fle sh ." S ource: www.eb.com
