 GAILLARD, John, (uncle of Theodore Gaillard Hunt), a Senat or from South Carolina; born in St. Stephens District, S.C. , September 5, 1765; educated for the legal profession in E ngland; member, State house of representatives 1794-1796; m ember, State senate 1796-1804, serving as president 1803-18 04; elected as a Republican to the United States Senate i n 1804 to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Pie rce Butler; reelected in 1806, 1812, 1818, and 1824 and ser ved from December 6, 1804, until his death on February 26 , 1826; served as President pro tempore of the Senate durin g the Eleventh and Thirteenth through Nineteenth Congresses ; died in Washington, D.C.; interment in the Congressiona l Cemetery.
