He was a Baptist minister in Abbeville, York and Chester counties,then located in lower Greenwood County in 1869. He married a first cousin, Mary Elizabeth Gaines. Three of their seven children died young.

He was a farmer and merchant in southern Greenwood County. Hewasstate senator from Edgefield,1896-1897, and state senator fromGreenwoodCounty 1900-1904. Gaines post office was in his store at the intersection of state roads 154 and 44, not far from highway 25 south. Later, he headed an insurance agency in Greenwood.
