General Notes for Child Shadrick Noah Galyean
Shadrick "Shack" Noah Gallion/Galyean apparently w a s b o r n in Grayson County, Virginia. He also lived i n Su rr y Co un ty, North Carolina in abeautiful valley tha t wa s "a ir-co ndi tioned " by the wind blowing over a hig h mou ntai n nea r hi s farm land. He raised tobacco and p ossib l y c o rn o n th e land. Nearby is a town named Low e Ga p becaus e of th e man y Lowes in the area . There ar e sti ll Galyea ns in Su rry Co unty to this day.
He married first, Mahalia Rector and second, Rutha K . L o w e . He had a total of 21 children from both marr iag e s . Ru tha was much younger thanS hadrick. Apparent l y h e or iginal ly spelled his surname as GALLION and fo r s om e unkno wn reas on changed it to GALYEAN prior to mo vin g t o Arkansa s.
Near the first of September, 1859, the Shadrick Galy e a n a n d David Edwards families left their Surry County , N or th C ar olina homes in ox wagons and some horse draw n wa gon s, fo r B enton County, Arkansas. They arrived nea r th e clo se o f Nove mber of the same year, having been o n th e trai l fo r about t hree months. The trip was diffi cul t and th e wint er was com ing on - they never travele d o n Sunday . Wild ga me and fire wood were prepared on Sa turd ay and t he Lord ' s Day would b e quietly observed b y som e spring o r river.
Shadrick settled in the Hiwasse area. Hiwasse is ve r y r u r al to this day. The main crop in Hiwasse wa s ap pl e s . I have a photocopy of anold picture of Shadr ick a n d Ru th a. Rutha looks relatively young and has he r hai r u p in t h e style of the day. Shadrick appears t o have c atar acts o n h is eyes which appear white in th e photo. H e ha s long g re y hair and a long grey bear d and has a c ane . Judging f ro m the clothing I suspect t he photograp h wa s taken in th e la te 1860's in Arkansas.
Apparently Shadrick was part Cherokee Indian as was h i s s e c ond wife, Ruth(a). Two of his sons from his marr ia g e t o Ma halia served under the command of Stand Wati e w h o form ed th e Confed e rate 2nd Cherokee Mountedleas t ha l f Cherok ee . I don't think Mahalia was Cherokee be caus e h er surnam e w as Rector and there was a large colo ny (G erma nnia) in t he a rea.It is more likely that her h eritag e wa s German a s wer e the other Rectors of the col ony an d area.
(Medical):Rutha called it the Dead Palsy or something s i m i l ar.

INTRODUCTION
The Galyean and Munchus families appear to have li v e d i n t he Haystack section of Surry County, N.C., in w h a t is n ow c alled Stewarts Creek, an area bordered by t h e t owns o f Fran klin, Mount Airy, and Dobson.
Not much information can be gleaned about either fam i l y f r om the materials in this collection. It appear s th a t bo t h were farming families, involved in buying a nd se ll ing l an d; planting and harvesting crops, chiefl y cotto n a nd cor n ; and routine activities, like raisin g childre n, s upervis in g the work of slaves, paying taxe s, and sui ng an d bein g sue d by their neighbors. It als o appears t hat bo th fami lies w ere involved in making br andy, whic h they so ld or us ed in p ayment of debts.
Most of the Munchus family material involves James Mu n c h u s (also spelled Munkus, Munker, Muncus, Munkess) a n d da t e s from the 1810s through the 1840s; there is n o Mu nchu s f am ily material after 1850. Most of the Galye an fa mil y mate ria l relates to James C. Galyean (also sp elle d Gall yean, G alio n, Galyen) and begins around 1841 . Ther e are a lso a f ew it ems relating to James's wife E lizabet h; in th e 1840s , to Sa muel Galyean, who appear s to hav e been Jame s's fath er; and , in the 1880s, to Ep hriam Gal yean, who ma y have be en Jame s and Elizabeth' s son.
The collection contains a few family letters, most o f w h i c h were from Munchus or Galyean family relatives , wh o we r e e ither travelling on business or settled i n Alaba ma o r G eorg ia. There are two letters, 1855 an d 1860, fr om J . K . Munch us in Alabama to James Munchu s in which Ja mes w as u rged t o move west and to remembe r the importanc e of e ducat ing hi s children. The 1860 l etter also menti ons hum oris t and loc al color writer Har din E. Taliaferro , who le ft Su rry Count y for Tennesse e and Alabama in th e late 185 0s. A lso in th e 1860s, th ere is an unsigned n ote that la ments t he writer' s havin g lost his slaves an d investment s durin g the Civil W ar . An undated letter , probably fro m the 187 0s, is fr o m a homesick Mary Teagu e in Winston, N .C., to Ga lyean , comp laining about her lo neliness in town , but sayi n g that her c ompanions, who se em also to be fro m Surr y Coun ty, were unal terably oppose d to returning hom e.
The greater portion of the collection consists of inde n t u r es, bills, receipts, plats, summonses, and other fi na nc i a l and legal materials relating to both families . I n 18 4 4 a nd 1847, there are deeds conveying land fro m th e Munc hu se s to the Galyeans. These are the only ma teria ls in t h e col lection that link the two families. A lso in cluded a r e a re cipe for horse liniment, two adver tisemen ts, and f ou r smal l notebooks, two of which conta in exten sive print e d discuss ions of the efficacy of var ious pate nt medicine s.
