Dorothy and her brother Harry were twins. Dorothy Dana Downing records. Harry's tentative record was found on the SSDI, so birth date for Dorothy is tentative.[Downing.ged]
Dorothy and her brother Harry were twins. Dorothy Dana Downing records. Harry's social security application was obtained Feb. 26, 1999, confirming date of birth and location in Kiowa, Barber county, KS. As they were twins, one assumes Dorothy was present at Harry's birth <grin>. The "Gregath Book", located in the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, shows a birth year of 1917, same day and month. However, based on the photo take of Dorothy in 1919, I believe the 1915 year to be correct, as she appears to be four years old in that photo, not two. The death certificate of Sallie Marie Downing (d. 3 Sep 1940) signed by Dorothy Alspaugh, 1253 N. Waco Avenue. Sallie would have been Dorothy's aunt. Dorothy would have been 25 at that time, so apparently not married to that date. MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE SENT FOR 7-13-99.

Harry and his sister, Dorothy, were twins. Dorothy Dana Downing records. Birth and death dates are confirmed from SSDI for ss no. 509-18-1689. His socia security application was obtained February 26, 1999, showing his middle name to be "Downing", and his father's middle name as "Clarence". At the time of the application (May 12, 1939), he was unemployed and living at 1253 N. Waco, Wichita. It also shows his birth place as Kiowa, KS. One may safely assume that his twin sister was born on the same date and place! Harry's death certificate was obtained on July 8, 1999. It shows he had worked for the last six years (prior to 1979) as a custodian for the La Mesa Spring Valley School District, and lived at 8343 Mon Lake Drive, San Diego. Cause of death was complications from Leukemia. During 1999, computer contact was made with the two children of Harry (and wife Mary) Alspaugh. Steven Alspaugh resides in Connecticut; is a Lieutenant in a state reformatory; and Sue resides in Hawaii.

See note under Mamie Downing. Emma apparently was living in Wichita in 1951. On 7/26/98, a check of the Social Security Death Index located the following:

See note under Mamie Downing. Emily notified Pearl Downing of Mamie's death in 1951. On 7/26/98, a check of the Social Security Death Index located the following: Emily Alspaugh b. 14 Aug 1882, d. Aug 1974, Hutchinson, KS ss 509-68-2925 Sh married Horace Alspaugh. Records sent for under Freedom of Information Act on September 26, 1998, and were received on November 27, 1998. From this document it was learned that her middle name was Edith. Emily's death certificate was obtained in September, 1998, from the Kansas Department of Vital Statistics. She died of lung cancer at age 89. A request for a photo of the gravesite to Maple Grove Cemetery, Wichita, in October, 1998 resulted in the media photograph of the graves of Harry and Emily. In May, 1999, I visited Wichita and found the grave marker of Emily and Horace and re-photographed it. In July, 1999, I established computer contact with the grandchildren of Emily, through their father, Harry Alspaugh. They provided the photo of Emily taken shortly before her death in 1974. Her grandson, Steve Alspaugh, is a corrections officer in Connecticut. He and his wife, Mary, are planning a visi to Las Vegas in the fall or early winter of 2000, at which time more informatio will be exchanged.

"A printer, formerly connected with the Courier office, disappeared rather unexpectedly from the city yesterday, taking with him a young friend of ours. Don't know how he went--whether by rail, coach, or river-- but his companion, being a good walker, may have gone along. He wasn't quite 'three Sheets to the wind', but we'll waiger a poundcake from Keuthan's that he'll 'turn the Sheets' before Christmas, and come back to Madison. Hope if he does return, he won't 'Sue' us for this notice, as we mean well--better 'sue sheets' as the original cause of it. It is to be hoped the affair will soon be settled to the satisfaction of all interested." - attached to pictures of W. Gale Blymer and Susan Sheets, 1994. Pastor - Found record of living in Tiffin, Seneca, Ohio in 1870 2nd Census. Page 8, 1st Ward: He was printer, Susan kept house, Olive was 3.

General Notes for Child John Alston
"The Alstons in America ...." Although there is no writte n record of when two cousins, both named John Alston, cam e to America or where they actually landed, the following a ccount is offered as the most probable solution: In 1694, J ohn Archdale, a Quaker, was sent over from England to serv e as Governor of Carolina. It is believed that two young co usins, John Alston, age 21 (born 1673), the eldest son of J ohn and Anne (Wallis) Alston, and John Alston, age 28 (bor n 1666), the 2nd son of William and Tomasine (Brooke) Alsto n, came with the new Governor. They first went to Albemarl e Sound in North Carolina where the Quakers were numerous . Here the younger John Alston probably remained and marrie d Mary Clark. Tradition in the Alston family states that th e two cousins after reaching America, disagreed and parted . The elder John Alston accompanied John Archdale on to Cha rleston, South Carolina, where he went to meet with the leg islature there. This John Alston changed the spelling of hi s name by adding an additional L, making it John Allston. H e met and married Elizabeth Harris, a young widow, in June , 1695. In South Carolina, he founded the family which ha d been noted in the history of that state.
