General Notes for Child Nicholas Tripp

[John-Peleg.FTW]

There is no proof Nicholas Connected to the Rhode Islan d T r ipps at this point but, It would be a good place for the two families to con n e ct the Nicholas in North Carolina, and Nicholas Gardner in the Rhode Isl a n d Tripp family. Also he would of had a brother Caleb if he was in this family. Maybe that is the Caleb that showed up in Pitt, C o u nty, North Carolina. I researched each of 25 Nicholas names in the compute r o n M ay 25, 1992. Only two were even close to being at the right time and plac e . N icholas Daw was about the same age as John Tripp, but there was no connec t i on that we know of until Robert Tripp married Grace Daw in abt 1784. Tha t i s 2 5 years after Nicholas Tripp shows up buying land in Orange County, No r t h Carolina. The Nicholas Gardner connected with the Tripps, when hi s d a ughter Mary, married Peleg Tripp on June 28, 1728. Therefore any connection between Nicolas Tripp of North C a r olina and the Rhode Island Tripps will remain in doubt until someone comes al o n g with the answer. Dortha Tripp of Virginia has some feeling toward a possib i l ity that Nicholas came from Virginia. If that were the case the Nicholas Tr i p ps and the John Tripps would have been connected back in England someti m e . We will keep looking and Herman William Tripp--Remembering...... [DNichsix.FTW]

Nicholas Tripp first shows up in Orange Co., NC about 17 5 3 . There have been many attempts to determine the paren ta g e and lineage of Nicholas. Within this site is some o f t h e history of this area, some of the possible ancestra l fa mi ly options, and finally what we currently know abou t Nic hol as Tripp of Orange Co., NC.

History of Orange Co., NC

ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/nc/orange/tax/oran_ta x . txt Orange Co., North Carolina was created in 1752 from the l a r ger Bladen, Granville and Johnston counties. Later in 1 7 7 7 Caswell Co. was created from the "Northern Division " o f O range Co. Later in 1791, Pearson Co. was created fr om t he " Eastern" half of Caswell Co. and in 1840 Alamanc e Co . was c reated from the "Western" half of Orange Co. A lso p art of D urham Co. was created in 1881 from the "East ern" p ortion o f Orange Co.

Tripp Men in the South

The following male Tripps were in the south prior to Nich o l as buying land after 1753. It may be clear that som e o f th ese lines are not ancestors of Nicholas Tripp, bu t I b eliev e that it may be helpful to know which Tripp li nes we re i n the south at the time of Nicholas's arrival t o hel p preve nt any unnecessary confusion.

Migration:

Rhode Island to North Carolina

There is this DAR listing:

Robert Tripp, b 1722, d 1800 m Grace Caw PS NC

I believe that this Robert (Robert, James, John) came f r o m the RI Tripp family and his wife's maiden name is act ua ll y Daw. Robert and some of his descendants appear t o hav e b een with him in NC. See descendants of John Trip p of R I fo r more info on Robert's line. It is not curren tly tho ugh t that Nicholas is a descendant of Robert Tripp. Maryland to North Carolina:

The first record we have of the Trippe family in Maryla n d i s in 1663 of a Lieutenant Colonel Henry Trippe. Som e o f Hen ry's descendants migrated to NC. Henry was born i n Ca nterbu ry, England in1632 and died in Dorchester Count y, Ma rylan d in March of 1698. Henry had fought in Flander s unde r th e Prince of Orange, who was afterwards King Wil liam II I, o f England. He brought with him to the Provinc e three o f hi s troopers and took up land in Dorchester Co unty, MD . Henr y came with four of his sons, John, William , Henry J r. an d Edward. When Henry Trippe came to Marylan d he owne d a pie ce of land and called it "The Tripelow Fo rrest".

Henry was Representative in Maryland Assembly in 1671-7 5 , 1 681-82, 1692-93; and was one of the Committee of Twen t y fo r regulating affairs in Maryland in 1690; a Justic e an d Cou nty Commissioner in 1669-81, 1685-94; a Captai n of f oot i n 1676; a Major of Horse in 1689. Henry's bro ther, Th omas T rippe, was mentioned by James, Duke of York, afterwards King James II., in his autobiography (Naim Pap e r s) as aiding him to escape from St. James Palace afte r t h e beheading of Charles I. Henry Trippe married France s Br oo ke, widow of Michael Brooke of St. Leonard's Creek , Calv er t County, Maryland and married second an Elizabet h, wh o sur vived him.

Henry Trippe's, son John Trippe, ended up in North Carol i n a as early as 1712. This caused some early confusio n i n No rth Carolina since John Trippe went by the name o f Tri p an d Tripp instead of Trippe. He had four sons, Hen ry, Jo hn, W illiam and Neville. These four boys start ou t as Trip p, bu t over time changed the spelling of each o f their nam es t o Trippe. This change coincided exactly wi th the arriv al o f Robert Tripp from Rhode Island. It is t hought that J ohn T rippe wanted to be certain that everyon e knew that th ere we re two different Tripp families.

Some of the early records of MD Trippe men are found in t h r ee wills:

http://www.access.digex.net/~spectre/lecompte/ 1. Anthony1 LECOMPTE was born circa 1618 near Callis, Par i s h of Mackeneere Callis, Province of Picardy. He marrie d H es ter Dottante on 11 Jun 1661 at St. Helen's Church, B isho pga te, London, Middlesex, England. He died in 1673. H is es tat e was probated on 25 Oct 1673. He left a will o n 9 Se p 167 3 at Dorchester County, Maryland; "To eld. so n John , all la nd on other side of the Ck.; also 50 acre s bough t of Willia m Willoughby / To 3 sons, viz: Moses, P hilip, a nd Anthony , residue of land equally / To daus. 7. John3 LECOMPTE Jr. (John2, Anthony1) was born circa 1 6 8 6 at Dorchester County, Maryland. He married Blanche Po we ll , daughter of Charles Powell and Clare Gary, circa 17 0 9 a t Maryland. He died in 1754. His estate was probate d o n 1 5 Mar 1754. 4. Anthony2 LECOMPTE Jr. (Anthony1) was born in 1665 at M a r yland. He married Margaret Beckwith at Maryland. He di e d ci rca 1705. His estate was probated on 6 Jun 1705. Mar ga ret B ECKWITH married second John Brannock Sr., son of E dmo nd Bra nnock and Jane Roche, after 1705. She left a wil l o n 13 Oc t 1751 that read: (Wills 28, 324)... Exs. Josep h Pa in and A nn, his wife / Wit: JOHN TRIPPE, Samuel Huber t, Ma ry Hinkso n" as recorded in the Maryland Calendar o f Wills , Cotton an d Wright. She died in Oct 1751. Her est ate wa s probated o n 23 Oct 1751.

From unknown to GA:

The DAR also has this later listing:

John Tripp, b 1756, d 1796, m Sally Unknown PS GA

I have not been able to place this John into any Tripp li n e ages that I currently have. This John may be connect e d t o the John Trippe who was born about 1740 and died D e c 1794 . This John Trippe also married a Salley Unknown . Th eir dau ghter, Lily Ann Trippe, born about 1768 in NC , marr ied an A llen Pope of NC. Allen and Lily soon move d to G A as thei r first child was born in GA. Because of t he spel ling of Tr ippe, this John may also be from the M D Trippe l ine.

Rhode Island to North Carolina:

Herman has Nicholas Tripp attached as a son to Peleg an d M a ry (Gardner) Tripp with an explanation as to his theo ry . Se e Herman's site for more Information about Nichola s Tr ipp

Nicholas bought 640 acres of land from George William s o f O range Co., NC. This purchase took place after Ma y 2, 1 75 3 which is when George first purchased the land . (Regist e r of Deeds Office of Orange Co., NC 1752-1768 , 1793).

In 1759, Nicholas purchased another 100 acres of or on C a n e Creek, Orange Co., NC and this land shows up on the 1 7 7 9 Tax Rolls. 1779 T610 TRIPP Nicholas N/A N/A N/ A T a x Roll (North Carolina Division of Archives & History, 109 Eas t J o nes Street, Raleigh, NC. 2761).

Nicholas was an overseer of roads for Orange Co., NC in 1 7 6 5.

In 1785 Nicholas was exempt from the Orange Co. Poll Tax.

We find a Nicholas Tripp in the Pendleton District o f S C i n 1789, we are assuming that in his old age he wa s wit h hi s son William who was living in SC.

Any additional information on any of the above subjec t s i s greatly welcomed.

As a Kansas farmer, he came to California in 1876, making for Ventura County, where he farmed for eight years. In 1884 he homesteaded two miles south of Shandon, and later he was one of the early merchants in that town." From San Luis Obipso Co. Arroyo Grande newspaper: Obituary DEATH CALLS C.B. GRAINGER OLD PIONEER Had Been Resident of County for the Past Forty eight Years Funeral Services Will Be Held Tomorrow at the Methodist Church "C.B. Grainger, one of our most highly esteemed pioneer citizens, passed away at his home on West Branch Street at 2:45 o'clock yesterday afternoon after an illness of several months. Cause of death was a general breaking down due to his advanced age of 84 years, 7 months and 16 days. Columbus Baxter Grainger was born in Warrensburg, Johnston County, MO., January 23, 1848, and moved to Kansas in 1869. He was married to Miss Melita Jane Gardner in Perry, KS, January 26, 1873. To this union four children were born, one of whom died in infancy. Mr. Grainger, a farmer by occupation, came to California in 1875 first settling in Santa Paula, Ventura County, where Mrs. Grainger passed away in 1881, leaving three small children, twin daughters, Nora and Zora, and a daughter, Alta. In 1883 he married Miss Eliza Roselmer Pfost of Santa Paula and to this union was born one son, Ira Grainger. Mr. Grainger moved to Shandon in 1884, where he was one of the pioneer farmers of that section and where he farmed extensively until 1904 when he and Mrs. Grainger moved to Berros and purchased the farm now owned by Mrs. G.W. Risk. In 1917 they moved to Arroyo Grande and bought the home on Allen street now occupied by his granddaughter, Mrs. Victor Tarwater. Mrs. Grainger passed away April 16, 1921 in a San Luis hospital and was laid to rest in the Arroyo Grande cemetery. In 1932 Mr. Grainger bought the home on West Branch street he occupied until his death. On July 28, 1926, he was married to Lydia Westfall of this city, who passed away at her home four years later on July 13, 1930, since which time Mr. Grainger has been living alone except at intervals when he was ill and his sister, Mrs. Alice Standiford, and his daughters would come and look after his welfare. Mr. Grainger leaves to mourn the passing of a devoted father, four children, three daughters, Mrs. Hillis Truesdale, Mrs. Willis Truesdale and Mrs. Alta Ramsey, all of Shandon; one son, Ira Grainger of Maywood; seventeen grandchildren, twenty-four great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Alice Standiford of Arroyo Crande and Mrs. Jane Sproul of Bell, CA; three brothers, Thomas Grainger of Bell, Alexander Grainger of Fullerton and William Grainger. Mr. Grainger was a devoted Christian and for many years was a member of the Methodist church in Shandon and since his residence here in 1904 has been one of the most faithful and loyal members of the local Methodist church. He was a kind friend and neighbor and made hosts of friends during his lifetime with his unusually pleasing personality. Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Methodist church with Rev. E. J. Bradner officiating. Interment will be in the Arroyo Grande Cemetery.', "Sleep on, Dear friend, such lives as thine Have not been lived in vain. But hold an influence, rare, divine, on lives that here remain."
