General Notes (Husband)
Place of birth is shown as Shelbina Township, Shelby County, Missouri. The papers of Alice Gary Early showed Edisto Island, SC. He obviously lived in Shelbina, MO, as a young child because he is shown on the 1880 Census in above Shelbina. Source: Application papers for The National Society of Colonial Dames of America in The State of South Carolina for Mrs. Philip DuTart Pinckney, full maiden name: Nancy Patricia Gary.
1880 Census differs in the place of birth. It lists it as Missouri. The Edisto Island source came from Alice May Gary Early & it is unknown where her information came from. (MGHB/2002)
General Notes (Wife)
"Grannie" as she was known to her grandchildren, wholeheartedly believed in God and the Episcopal Church. She had her own pew, and anyone who would dare to sit there was asked to move to another pew. "Carrie" as she was known by friends, was also a master seamstress. She made beautiful baby clothes, some still in possession by the family. She made the clothes with lovely round thread lace and lawn(a soft cotton fabric like batiste). She made beautiful Charleston bonnets of organdie, in fact making them for others by order. She sewed to bring a little money in to run her household and survive. "Grannie" mended and laundered Rector Harold Thomas's vestments. Rector Thomas served St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Charleston and Grannie's granddaughter, Jeanne, remembers Rector Thomas visiting her when she was sick as a child She also remembers what a kind and popular man he was, often playing games and telling stories to the children. "Grannie" had a treadle sewing machine. Her granddaughter, Jeanne, used to love to sit on the floor and watch her peddle and treasured the times that her Grannie would help her learn to sew. Grannie made doll clothes for all of her granddaughters - Jeanne, "Trish", and Carol. "Grannie" was also a wonderful cook. On Saturday mornings, she and her cook, Viola, prepared breakfast for her black friends; Clement, the fish and shrimp man, who sold his seafood out of his hand pushed cart; Mattie, the vegetable woman who carried her wares on her head; Janie, the flower woman who sold flowers out of her huge sweetgrass basket which she balanced on her head as she walked.

"My mother, Alice Gary Early. Tall, elegant, proud (in her best days) - a loving and caring mother. She was beautiful to look at in her younger years." "Mother had lovely taste - a knack for turning something unattractive into something beautiful. She could pain, sew, knit, garden and play the piano. she loved flowers and anything blue or lavender. She always had those colors in her home." "A 'store-bought dress' was something I never had until my teen years. Mother made all of my clothes, and I was proud of them. She even made my evening dresses or remade them for the dances that I went to." "Our home was always pretty, due to her talents. We never had much money and lived in rental houses, which she and Daddy improved with paint and imagination. There was always a cook in the kitchen until the early '40's. Former cooks then worked for the government or the cigar factory. The pay was good, which Mother and Daddy couldn't match." "On Sundays we would ride to Summerville to see cousins. (I think some Baileys) or we would drive over the Cooper River to Sullivan's Island, other times to Folly Beach. In the summers for a few years, Daddy and Mother rented a beach house and sub-let our house in town. We had a wonderful time doing all of the things that children do at the beach." "Mother became interested in family history during my teen years and thereafter. She and Daddy went to cemeteries and libraries looking for family information." "She loved her 'toddies' and cigarettes plus good jokes." "When I was a young teenager, Mother was hospitalized with acute Iritis and glaucoma. She also had pneumonia the same year. That was over Christmas, and it was a very gloomy time at our house. However, she got through all right. Then, a few years later, she had cataract surgery, which sadly kept her from playing the piano. She had always played so beautifully and with so much feeling. She loved good music. She would play for Daddy to sing and she loved to dance!" "During World War II, Mother worked for the Red Cross in the Field Director's office. She was a 'Grey Lady' and was in charge of the blood drives. She taught me to knit and we made sweaters for the 'boys overseas'. "The first 'store-bought' dress that I ever had was white waffle pique appliqued with red apples on the bottom of the gathered skirt and edged with red on the sleeves and square neck. I was so proud of that dress." "Mother and Daddy went to the Cotillion Club masquerade ball every year. I loved to see them in their costumes." "When we all finished school and left home, Mother and Daddy bought their house in Mount Pleasant. They sold the 'cabin' that they had owned at Caesar's Head to pay for it. Before they bought the house in Mt. Pleasant, they owned one of the old hotel cottages at Caesar's Head. They worked on that and were so proud to be homeowners. They loved it up there, especially Daddy." "In her years before marriage and family, Mother's family lived in Columbia during World War I. Grannie had a boarding house. My Grandfather traveled as a drug salesman. Mother attended Chicora College in Columbia. My grandfather died before Mother was married. After his death, they moved back to Charleston." "My mother instilled in us moral values, good manners, love of God, and an appreciation of the beauty around us." "She was ill for seven years, downhill each day. We believe it was Alzheimer's Disease, although it was never diagnosed. It was very hard to see her that way for she loved life." Source: Jeanne Northrop Early Hagood, daughter of Alice May Gary Early. July 2002
