Gaston was describ ed by a colleague as "six feet two inches in height, stron g and athletic. His address was pleasant and prepossessing , his mind sturdy, vigorous and honest, and sought that whi ch was true and useful."
On Thursday evening September 10, 1857 Joseph Lucius Gas ton, Esquire, was married to the beautiful Margaret Brice H emphill of Woodland Plantation, Fairfield County, SC, hom e of her grandfather, Robert Brice.
Lucius bought for his bride the "Brick House" on York St reet in Chesterville which had been built by Absolum House r before 1855.
Their parlor furniture, including a Rosewood piano, wa s brought up from Charleston by wagon.
Two children, Janie Gaston and Joseph Lucius Gaston, Jr . were born to the young couple whose life was soon to be i nterrupted by the War Between the States. Although Lucius d id not approve of secession and had refused to allow himsel f to be nominated to the Secession Congress, when war cam e he volunteered to serve with Company F. 6th Regiment of the Co nfederate Army.
On May 31, 1862 Captain Joseph Lucius Gaston and his bro ther, William Hall Gaston, were killed in Virginia at the B attle of Seven Pines as they fought side by side. Their bro ther, James McFadden Gaston, M.D., wrote to Lucius' widow , Margaret, "they fought together hour after hour and fel l near the close of action, almost side by side."
Their bodies were recovered from the battlefield by thei r brother James, Camp Surgeon, and brought back to Chester by the Rev. John Hemph ill Simpson whose great service to the Confederate cause wa s to return the bodies of fallen Confederates to their hom e districts whenever possible. Isaac Gaston, younger, had died in a military hospital in F airfax Courthouse, VA on September 1, 1861. The three broth ers are buried in the churchyard of the Cedar Shoals Presby terian Church, and on their monument is inscribed, "Tres No biles Fratres".

A cousin, Joe Roddey, ran a bank and the Equitable Lif e Underwriters in Rock Hill. The young Gaston had in his mi nd he would go up to New York and take the Equitable Life U nderwriter's test. But the Great Depression of 1929 and th e 30s changed his plans. He returned to Presbyterian and to ok 15 hours of lab a week. His younger brother, Frank Gasto n planned to go into medicine and by the time Frank graduat ed from high school, young John had finished his pre-med st udies.
"Frank and I and a cousin, Gaston Quantz of Rock Hill , all went to the Medical College of South Carolina," he sa id. "We all graduated together in 1937."
John Gaston came to Chester and opened a practice, whil e his brother and cousin opened offices in Rock Hill. He we nt on to practice at Chester County Hospital for more tha n 50 years.

The new 26-bed nursing center was created by renovatin g the former East Wing. "It is a beautiful wing," said Gast on, who was a patient at the hospital. "I wish my dad had b een living. He would have been quite happy. My father pract iced (medicine) about 57 years in Edgemoor, Lando, Richburg . We grew up in Edgemoor."
"I've been told I'm very much like my father. That wa s always a tribute because I tried to pattern myself afte r him," Gaston added.
Dr. Gaston is remembered for his keen sense of humor. H e always had a joke to tell and, no matter how bad somebod y might feel he could always cheer them up. He always ha d a twinkle in his eye, friends remember.

For many years, every weekend, there was a foursome tha t could be found at Chester Golf Course. Dr. Gaston would be joined on the link s by Harry Heath and the late Phelps Brooks and Ross Gladde n. These four guys had a camaraderie that stretched over ma ny years even after they were no longer able to play golf.

General Notes for Child William Newton Gaston Lieutenant
WILLIAM NEWTON AND MARY McCULLOUGH BASKIN GASTON William Newton Gaston, son of Joseph A. and Elizabeth Wyli e Gaston, was born January 20, 1839 near the banks of Fishing Creek. He spen t his boyhood days in the Pleasant Grove Methodist Church c ommunity where he attended an academy sufficiently to ge t a fair education. He was a farmer and tilled the soil unt il his death, except for the years interrupted by the war.
Designated Lieutenant in Co. A. Fifth S.C. Reg. C.S.A. , he served with his brother John Porter Gaston. A letter W illiam wrote to his father from Petersburg, Virginia, Octob er 29, 1864, vividly recounts skirmishes with Grant's army . William also kept a diary of his war experiences. Unfortu nately, only the last page has survived, recording his impr isonment off the Virginia coast aboard a prison steamer where he was given three days rations of b acon and hard tack before being disembarked at Newport News . On June 25th and 26th, he recounts that the officer in co mmand of the prison was Col. Bamberg of the 5th Maryland Re giment. On June 28th the North and South Carolina troops we re discharged. William arrived home July 3, 1865.
William was soon working the land again and thinkin g of a stable domestic arrangement after so many years of l iving in tents and trenches. He married Mary McCullough Ba skin, daughter of Joseph Baskin, and kinsperson to Alexand er Hamilton Stephens, Vice President of the Confederate Sta tes. Mary was a very attractive and refined lady. Born Jul y 29, 1839, she married William on February 13, 1866, i n a ceremony performed by the Reverend J.H. Saye at Fishin g Creek Presbyterian.
Eight children were born to William and Mary:
Anna, Lottie Blair who married a Mr. Steel, Rosa Ferr y who married Dr. W.F. Strait, Elizabeth Wells who marrie d William Pinkney Neely, Ethel Victoria who married a M r. Quantz, Joseph who married Jane Owings, Dr. John Newto n who married Mary Patton, and William Wylie who married Su san Annie Hicklin.
