Immigrated 1891 TO Avoid Army
"Stories Aunt Marie (Gaul) Bethune Has Told Me" Jean Gaul dated 7/30/93
1. When Pop died in 1979, Marie attended the funeral. She stayed in the area for a few days and I got to speak with her about the family. She told me that her mother (Teresa (Schauf or Shoof), BK 376) confided in Lizzie because she was older. This story goes like this - Her husband, George Gaul, BK 375, was concerned about his wife's health as they were having children very often. He asked Teresa if she knew of any other women to talk to and ask them about "birth control". In those days this job was considered a "Woman's course in life" and he must have been very embarrassed to mention it to her. Teresa was a simple woman with little education and did not speak the English language well. So she didn't seek out any help - possibly from female relatives, friends, or even a doctor - for fear of ridicule and shame. She was 37 years old and died after childbirth. She died of Child Bed Fever and didn't know any of her family in the final hours.
2. At another time, Marie related this story to me, as told to her by Lizzie. - After Teresa's death, the baby girl, Agnes Gaul, BK 383, was taken to a Catholic Foundling Home, (unknown location). Father George Gaul took the baby there, himself. He said Agnes looked a lot like the Gaul side of the family and she was very healthy. The other children were becoming a nuisance. Concerned the people in town thought it proper to put them in various homes until George could get another wife. This didn't suit George very well but he had to go to work and someone had to take care of the smaller children. Arrangements were made for Marie and Frank to go to homes in the town. But about 3 months later, word came from the Foundling Home that Agnes was very ill. Before George got to go there, little Agnes died. She was 3 months and 2 weeks and 6 days old. When George went to claim the body, He said he doubted it was his own little Agnes. She was completely changed. But he took the body anyway and buried her as his own daughter. He always had the suspicion that it wasn't Agnes. Years later, when Marie was living in Florida after retirement with her husband, Leslie Bethune, she became acquainted with a women who looked very much like Marie - Herself. Questioning her, Marie found out that the woman was adopted by a family in Western Penn. Marie said she had no proof, but became very good friends with this lady and felt she was a LONG LOST SISTER. The family records were kept by Lizzie as she recorded the dates, birth order and names in her Family Bible. The data is written in pencil and ink. In some places it is worn. I have the Bible and have sent the information to others in the family. submitted by Virginia E. Gaul (Jean)

General Notes for Child George William (Gaul) Gould
[bobspu.ged]
GEORGE WILLIAM GOULD BK 378
George William Gould was born as George W. GAUL, in or near Smithton, PA., in 1892. He was the son of George and Teresa (Shoof) Gaul. His parents came here from Germany in 1891. His father came here to avoid going to the German Army. Their oldest daughter, Elizabeth (called Lizzie) was born over there in 1888. She was three years old when they came to the United States. George had some brothers in Germany before the family came to America, but we don't know if there were any other sisters from Germany. Their other children born in this country are Andy, (he had his name changed to Bill) born in 1894; Joe, born in 1895; Marie, born in 1897; Frank, born in 1899; and Agnes, born on Nov.11, 1902 and died March 3, 1903. Teresa died Nov.29, 1902 from complications of this birth. When Lizzie started to school, she could only speak German. There was a mix-up about their name. The teacher spelled it "GOUL". Bill and Joe let their names stay that way. George legally changed his name to GOULD some time or other, but the rest of the family still go by their name "GAUL". After their mother died, the children lived with their father and Lizzie kept house for about 3 years. She got married and soon after the marriage, the father left. They did not know if he went to find work or what, but the children were "farmed out". George went to live with a doctor, and the other children went to various places. Frank was the only one to stay with Lizzie. In 1908 their dad, George, came back and got the three boys; George, Bill and Joe. They went to Alberta, Canada, three miles north of Seven Persons, near Medicine Hat to homestead. George was the only child old enough to get any land. He got 160 acres and his father got 160 acres. According to the stories, Joe was the cook. Uncle Bill said that young George didn't stay on the homestead very long. From there he went to town. He was in Canada for three years living in a number of towns including Calgary, Banff and Edmonton. From there he went to California. I guess the one word that would describe him would be "Adventurer". He called himself that when he met Mary B Robinett in 1919. He had told Mary that by the time they met he had been in 40 states and 5 provinces of Canada. While they were out in Kansas, he liked to hunt jack rabbits. One day he shot 86. Some of the men on the hunt shot over 100. There was a 5 cent bounty on them and all they had to do was cut off their ears and take them in to get the money. The bounty was on the rabbits because there were so many that they were destroying the wheat crops. Some of the business men in Colby got together, formed a team, chose sides and went on a hunt. The losing team had to furnish a dinner to the winning team. Oh, I forgot to say, after George shot the 86 rabbits with his model 12 - 20 gauge Winchester, some of the guys traded in their 10 and 12 gauge shot guns for 20's. I don't know about George, but Mary did not like Kansas. The thing she disliked the most was the sand. She said it blew in the house all the time. "You couldn't cover anything up good enough to keep the sand out." George died of a heart attack at his home in Elkhart, Indiana, in 1950.
