William Wilcox sold his farm in Sandisfield in 1816 , a n d m o ved with his family to Middlebury, OH, near whe re A kr on n o w stands. They traveled by ox team, having t hre e yok e o f ox en, one horse, and two wagons. Among th e goo ds wer e 20 0 pou nds of wool which his wife, Lucinda , late r carde d, sp un, an d made into garments for the fa mily.Th eir jour ney la sted fo rty-one days and was quit e tedious . At one p oint th ey wer e delayed at Lima, NY , for five d ays due t o the illn ess o f a child, Emily, a nd another ti me by an i njury to Wi lliam' s knee. The property in Middlebury, which William had purchas e d s i t e unseen, turned out to be unsuitable. In 1818 th e y rem ov e d to Deerfield after having made an exchang e o f the or igi na l land for better property in the easte rn p art of De erfi el d Township on the Mahoning River. Wi llia m is quote d as s ayi ng at that time, "I have blunder ed o n a good far m." His health failed, and on June 22, 1828, he died a t t h e a g e of fifty-one. ------- To all people to whom these presents shall come, Gree t i n g . WILCOX - In Deerfield, Sept. 16th, Mrs. Lucinda Wilco x , a g e d 78 years.
Mrs Wilcox was born in east Windsor, Conn, where sh e l i v e d until the year 1803, when she was married and w it h h e r hu sband settled in Sandisfield, Mass. They live d a t t h e latte r place thirteen years, when, in hoped o f bet teri n g their c ondition, they determined to try the ir for tun e i n what wa s then called "the wilderness of t he West ." T he y moved to D eerfield in the year 1816*, an d endure d th e tr ials and hard ships incident to preparin g a hom e i n a new c ountry. Ten children were raised by their paternal care and rec e i v e d such advantage of education as those times woul d pe rm i t . In the fall of 1828 the husband and father wa s tak e n aw a y by the hand of Death. Since then Mrs. W. h as liv e d a wi do w. In early life she loved the religio n of Chri s t and wa s f or many years a member of the Pres byterian C hu rch. Sh e ha s gone to her rest, and childre n and grandc hil dren ma y hop e again to meet her in a bli ssful immorta lity.

Of all that can burden her mind.
How peaceful the soul that has left,
This wearisome body behind.
*The Wilcox family first moved to a place called Middl e b u r y near Akron in what is now Summit County. This ori gi n a l la nd was found to be unsuitable, and the family m ov e d t o Deer field Twp. to a spot Northeast of the cente r a lo ng t he Maho ning River.

Alexander was born in Sandisfield, MA, November 27, 1 8 1 2 , a nd moved with his family to Ohio in 1816. When Al ex an de r wa s 15, his father died, leaving him in charg e o f th e fa mily . He took up the trade of carpenter an d join er af ter s ervin g a four year apprenticeship unde r Lyma n P. Ham lin. H e wa s a noted builder of bridges, h omes, a nd othe r structu res . One of the first dwelling s he const ucted wa s a fram e hous e for his widowed mothe r. The brid ge whic h he buil t acros s the Mahoning Rive r south of Dee rfield s tood for f ifty yea rs. He is als o credited with b uilding t he second F irst Meth odist chu rch in Deerfield . At age sev enty-two h e invente d a succ essful patent fen ce.
At one time he reportedly captured two horse thiev e s ( o n e at Goergetown and the other at Deerfield), retu rn ed t h e a nimals to their owners, and received a rewar d o f $50. He attended the inauguration of Grover Cleveland in Was h i n g ton, DC, and visited Mount Vernon. His first presid en ti a l v ote was for Andrew Jackson.
In the Township Personals and Directories of Portage C o u n t y (1874), Alexander is listed as living on Lo t 8 5 a s a fa rm er in Deerfield Township.
