General Notes (Husband)

Among the additions to the settlement East of Kaskaskia , R a ndolph County, Illinois in 1801 was Joseph Heard and his fami l y . They crossed the Ohio River from Kentucky and travelled overl a n d from river to river, finding neither house, bridge or ferry for th e w h ole distance, upwards of one hundred miles. Joseph Heard fi r s t settled on Garrison Hill east of Kaskaskia, and then improved a fa r m o n Gravel Creek, two miles and a half north of Chester, on the ro a d f rom Chester to New Palestine. In later years it was known as the pro p e rty of Joseph B. Holmes. They settled in that neighborhood because it was near Kas k a skia, at the time the largest known place in the Valley of the Mis s i ssippi River.
