DAR shows he died in 1857 DAR #155667
MET HIS FUTURE WIFE AT A HUSKING BEE, WHERE THE TWO WERE PARTNERS. THEIR ACQAINTANCE PROGRESSED FAVORABLY IN SPITE OF THE DIFFICULTY IN CONVERSING, FOR IN HIS YOUTH, YOUNG CASPER SPOKE DUTCH MORE FLUENTLY THAN ENGLISH. A GRANDNIECE, WHO REMEMBERED ESTER GILLIAN SNOOK, (CASPER'S WIFE) IN THE LAST YEARS OF HER LIFE, DESCRIBED HER AS A PRETTY, OLD LADY WITH PINK CHEEKS AND VERY BLUE EYES, WEARING A WHITE CAP. CASPER MPVED TP BEAVER CPUNTY, PENN., BEFORE 1819, WHERE HE SERVED FROM IN THE WAR OF 1812 UNDER CAPTAIN THOMAS HENRY AND COLONEL MILLER. AT THAT TIME HE WAS LIVING ON A FARM WITHIN THE TOWN OF ECONOMY, WHERE JE LIVED FOR SEVERAL YEARS. BEFORE 1830 CASPER MOVED TO RICHLAND COUNTY, OHIO, WHERE HE LIVED UNTIL 1835. IN 1840 CASPER'S SON WILLIAN AND HIS FAMILY MOVED TO IOWA AND IN SEPTEMBER, 1841. HIS SON JOHN WAS MARRIED TO MARY FOWLER AMD IMMEDIETELY AFTER THEIR MARRIAGE, THE YOUNG COUPLE, ACCOMPANIED BY CASPER'S DAUGHTER ESTHER SNOOK KAUFFMAN AND HER HUSBAND AND FAMILY, LEFT FOR IOWQ TO SPY OUT THE LAND. THEY STOPPED IN LEE SOUNTY, WHERE THEY STAYED. IN MAY OF 1842 THEY JOINED THE PRESBYTERIAN COUNTY CHURCH AT FAIRFIELD BEING AMONG THE FIRST ONES TO BE ADMITTED TO MEMBERSHIP.
AS THEY WERE WELL PLEASED WITH THE REPORTS SENT BACK, THE TWO BROTHERS, CASPER AND PETER SNOOK, AND THE REST OF THEIR CHILDREN, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF PETER'S ELDEST SON AND DAUGHTER WHO REMAINED IN PENN., FOLLOWED. ALL TRAVELED BY WAGON PROBABLY PULLED BY OXEN, NINE FAMILIES IN ALL. CASPER AND ESTER SNOOK BECAME MEMBERS OF THE FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF FAIRFIELD IN FEBRUARY 1843.
CASPER AND PETER REMAINED IN JEFFERSON COUNTY UNTIL THEY DIED IN 1851. THEY AND THEIR WIVES ARE BURIED ON THE SAME LOT IN THE EVERGREEN CEMETERY AT FAIRFIELD, IOWA, A FEW YEARS AGO, THE DAR PLACED A MARKER ON THEIR GRAVES WITH APPROPRIATE CEREMONIES, AND INVITED ALL RELATIVES TO ATTEND. SNOOK FAMILY MEMBERS STILL LIVE IN FAIRFIELD.
CASPER LIVED ON A FARM ABOUT TWO MILES NORTHWEST OF FAIRFIELD, JOINING THE FARM OF HIS SON JOHN. AFTER THE DEATH OF HIS WIFE IN 1846, HE MADE HIS HOME WITH HIS DAUGHTER, ESTER KAUFFMAN ON THE CCOLLEGE ROAD. IN 1850 CASPER RECEIVED BOUNTY LAND FOR HIS SERVICE IN THE WAS OF 1812.

Maxwell Genealogy from Don Back of p. 259 The Fairfield LEdger, Sept.1,1886 Page 3,Col.5 Another Pioneer Gone. The Wymore,Nebr. Semocrat contains the obituary of Peter G. Snook, one of the early settlers of Jefferson County, who died at his home in that city, Aug 14, 1886, aged 76 years, 11 months, and 28 days. He was a pioneer of Gage County, Nebr., as well as of this county. From his brother John we learn that Mr. Snook moved to this county in the fall of 1842. He engaged in farming and continued to reside here until the fall of 1873, making his residence in Jefferson County 31 years. Mr. Snook was a man of good character and very highly esteemed by all who knew him. Referring to his death the Democrat says: "Father Snook was one of the pioneers as well as a patriarch in our city. His estimable wife had proceeded him to the golden shores of the land of the leal only a few brief weeks.. Father Snook leaves a large circle of friends and relatives to mourn his loss. Several children, all of whom are married, reside in this city."

Merged General Note: IN 1850, WILLIAM AND HIS FAMILY WERE ON, THE CENSUS OF VAN BUREN COUNTY, IOWA JUST SOUTH OF JEFFERSON COUNTY. BY 1860, HE AND HIS FAMILY WERE IN LINN COUNTY, KANSAS WHERE HE LIVED UNTIL HIS DEATH. THE COUNTY HISTORY OF LINN COUNTY RELATES THAT HE MOVED TO LINN COUNTY IN 1857. HE PICKED A TERRIBLE TIME TO LIVE THERE AS THAT WAS THE PERIOD WHEN ALL THE FIGHTING WAS GOING ON BETWEEN THE SOUTHERN SYMPATHISTS AND NORTHERN SYMPATHISTS. BOTH SIDES WANTED KANSAS TO VOTE THEIR WAY. THERE WERE PEOPLE PULLED FROM THEIR HOMES AND MASSACRED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT, ALL FOR THE CAUSE! LUCKILY, WILLIAM SNOOK'S FAMILY ESCAPED NOTICE. ONE STORY ABOUT MARGARET SUMMERS SNOOK IS THAT SHE IS WHERE THE SNOOK TEMPER COMES FROM. ONE DAY SHE SENT WILLIAM TO TOWN TO GET HER SOME MATERIAL SHE WANTED. WHEN HE RETURNED WITHOUT THE PARTICULAR ONE SHE ASKED FOR, SHE HAD A TANTRUM. WILLIAM AND MARGARET HAD SIX SONS AND THREE DAUGHTERS. THREE SONS AND ONE DAUGHTER DIED YOUNG. IT WAS A HARD LIFE BACK THEN. ONE SON SILAS, DIED OF RUBELLA IN FAYETTEVILLE, ARKANSAS DURING THE CIVIL WAR. HE IS BURIED IN LINN COUNTY, KANSA, SO HE MUST HAVE BEEN BROUGHT HOME. WILLIAM SNOOK'S OBITUARY IN THE LaCYGNE JOURNAL, JANUARY 12, 1984 DIED - AT 730 O'CLOCK THURSDAY MORNING, OF CHRONIC BRONCHITIS, AT HIS HOME IN SCOTT TOWNSHIP, AGE 76 YEARS. HE HAD NOT BEEN WELL SINCE INJURED BY HIS TEAM RUNNING AWAY AT THE TIME THE FAIR WAS HELD IN THIS CITY LAST FALL. MR. SNOOK OR "UNCLE BILLY" AS HIS INTIMATE FRIENDS KNEW HIM, WAS MAN OF MOST EXCELLENT CHARACTER, WITH A LARGE CIRCLE OF FRIENDS, AND HIS DEATH WILL BE WIDELY REGRETTED.

John Snook 1818 BIOGRAPHY The family moved to Richland County, Ohio in 1855 or 1821. There he finished his education and studied for the ministry, but did not become an active minister because his constitution demanded an outdoor life.
John Snook a pioneer of Jefferson County of 1841., is well remembered by many of the later as well as the early settlers of this comunity, for his residence in the county covered a period of forty-seven years during which time he witnessed the advanced position to which it had attained, and bore an active part in the work of progress and development. He was a man of more than average ability and superior intelligence for one of his day, and exerted an influence for the upbuilding of the county's best interests which was widely felt.
Mr. Snook was born on a farm now within the corporate limits of the city of Allegheny, PA. His father, Casper Snook was also a native of the Keystone State, and was born of German parentage. He served his country in the War of 1812. The family moved to Ohio when John was a youth, and settling near Ashland, he was there reared to manhood, and in 1839 was joined in Wedlock with Miss Mary Fowlers, a native of the Empire State. The following year, accompanied by his young wife, he emigrated westward, and casting his lot with the pioneer settlers of the territory of Iowa, settled in Lee County. The succeeding year, in 1841, he removed to Jefferson County and located in Fairfield Township, one mile west of the city, and gave his attention to farming during the summer seasons, while during the winter months he devoted his time to teaching school. He was also employed on Government surveys in the northern part of the state for two seasons, but agriculture was the vocation which engrossed the greater part of his time. As before stated, he was at once recognized as a leading spirit in the community, and was honore with various local offices of trust. He served as a member of the County Board of Supervisors and as in every other position which he was called upon to fill, discharged his duties with fidelity. He was an advocate of Democratic principles.
Mr. Snook was a life-long member of the Presbyterian Church, and for forty years, served as one of the Elders. He was also a delegate to General Conferences severaldifferent times, and he manifested his interest in the cause by liberal contributions and untiring zeal in the work connected with it. As before stated, he was a man of superior education for his day in the West, and was a liberal contributor to the religious literature of his church. In early life he had studied for the ministry, but his constitution was never strong and the conditions of his health demanded outdoor exercises, which he found in farm life. However, he always took a warm interest in educational and religious matters, and was ever ready to advance their interest. In 1885 he sold his farm and removed to Fairfield, where he spent the latter years of his life, his death occuring in 1885, at the age of sixty-nine years. He enjoyed a wide circle of acquaintances and most highly respected and esteemed.
