In 1648, upo n the rise of William of Orange, MacIan of Glencoe was a pe rson of great integrity, honor, good nature, and courage; a nd his loyalty to King James was so great that he continue d in arms from Dundee's first appearing in the Highlands ti ll the fatal treaty which brought about his ruin.
MacIan the Glencoe Chief of McDonalds had three sons. Jo hn McDonald of Glencoe and his brother Alexander, escaped t he massacre. John died prior to 1714. General Notes (Husband)
Glenham (or Glemham) Hall, a red brick mansion of the Elizabeth period, originally belonged to the Glenham's a family which took it's name from Great Glemham and Little Glemham. Rye's "Calender of the Feet of Fines for Suffolk" contains several references to the family, the earliest being to William de Glemham relating to property at Glemham in 1228/9.
The Glemhams prospered under the Tudors and branched off to the neighbouring manor of Benhall which was the property for a time of one of the most colourful members of the family- an Elizabeth sea-dog Edward Glemham. In an age when adventures against the Spanish were akin more to piracy than orthodox warfare, Edward's voyages brought him the type of renown enjoyed by his contemporaries Drake & Raliegh. His exploits were recorded in a pamphlet published in 1851 entitled "The Honourable actions of that most famous and valiant Englishman Edward Glemham Esuire latelie obtained against the Spaniards and the Holy League in four sundrie fighties."
Edward's buccaneering may have brought him lustre but did not improve his financial position. Although he was recorded as at first being "a man of substance feasting his friends and relieving the poor plentifully" his fortunes declined and he had to sell Benhall.
Meanwhile his cousin and neighbour, Sir Henry Glemham, was flourishing and it was he who created Glemham Hall originally and made it such a beautiful example of Early Renaissance style with its gatehouse, pavilions, and enclosing walls.
Henry was governor of York and when he was forced to surrender to the Roundheads, he and a Yorkshire Cavalier, Sir Henry Slingsby, marched out with their regiments to continue their efforts in Lancashire and Cumberland. There they parted. - Glemham holding out bravely at Carlisle and only giving up after soldiers had been forced to eat their own horses,(Sir Thomas was also said to be the first man to teach hungry soldiers to eat cats & dogs!) From Carlisle, which he left with the honours of war, he went to South Wales to join the King and then took command at Oxford. In 1648 he was fighting in Scotland but soon after he died, for in 1650 his brother Henry, Bishop of St. Asaph, is on record as proving his will.
