Henry Woodward got off the ship of Robert Sandford i n 1666 to stay and live with the Indians on St. Helena Isla nd and learn their language. There was no settlement betwee n Cape Fear and the Spanish in St. Augustine when he did th is. He was listed as the ship's churgeon (doctor). Afte r being in South Carolina for about 6 months he wrote (in g ood Latin) to a Spanish priest in the area that he had bee n left by his ship and needed rescuing. The Spanish came a nd brought him to St. Augustine. The Spanish record says H enry was a native of London, but was not Catholic and the y suspected that he might not even be Christian. They put h im in the jail in St. Augustine. The Catholic priests go t him out of the jail because he could speak the language o f the Indians and was a doctor. After some time in St. Augu stine, Robert Searle, the Privateer/Pirate (depending whos e side you're on), attacked St. Augustine, and Henry left w ith him. While serving with the privateer he was shipwreck ed on Nevis (ST. Kitt's) Island during a hurricane (17 Augu st, 1669). The 3 ships coming to found the colony at Charl es Towne put into Nevis for supplies. Their record says "W e found one Henry Woodward in process of building a ship t o come and tell your majesty of his discoveries in the ne w world. He has joined our expedition." So Henry was the F irst English Settler to South Carolina. He never really go t along with the other settlers because he had not crosse d the ocean with them and they thought of him as a hitch-hi ker. He did many other wonderous things. He was Lord Ashl ey's Indian Agent. He was given 2,000 acres of land by Lor d Ashley and chose James Island. He died in 1685 of a feve r he got at the Scottish settlement at Stuart town. The Sco ts had jailed him for "trespassing" on Scottish territory . Many Scots died of a fever just after they let Henry g o and Henry died of the same fever shortly after that. General Notes for Child John Godfrey
John Godfrey was on one of the first 3 ships to settle Cha rles Towne in 1670. He was one of those "Gentlemen and Merc hants of the Island of Barbadoes" who had contributed to th e fund raised to send "William Hilton, Commander, and Commi ssioner with Captain Anthony Long, and Peter Fabian, in th e ship Adventure, which set sayle from Spikes Bay, Aug. 10 , 1663," on a voyage of discovery to the coasts of Carolina . He was always on the ruling council in the first years o f the colony.
