Isaac Vosburgh Isaac Vosburgh, the youngest of the three brothers, was bornabout 1658. he is the progenitor of a large branch of thefamily, a restless branch strongly characterized with thepioneer instincts. his descendants spread out in alldirections; and within two generations we find them inMassachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, the Mohawk Valley and theprovince of Quebec. The Albany and Coxsackie memgbers of thefamily originate through this line. p. 9 Isaac Vosburgh first appears in the Albany court records whilestill a minor. On September 5, 1676, his brother Pieter suedJan Thyse Goes, for an assalt upon Isaac committed in Pieter'sbarn. The wife of Jan Thyse saw Isaac chasing her husband'scows; she told Jan Thyse. whereupon he jumped over the fence,and according to his own testimony, admitted that he had hit thelad (Isaac) once. It appeared in the testimony that the fencewas in bad condition and that Jan Thysen's cows were on theVosburgh land at the time that Isaac was chasing them. Goes wasfined for the assault.and also he had to pay the costs of theaction. Before his marriage, Isaac lived with his brotherPieter on the homestead farm on the "Groot Stuck." One of theproperty provisions in Pieter's will, made in 1690, was that his"brother Isaac shall have half of the land of the farm at theKinderhook, situated on the Groote Stuck, provided he pay halfof what is still due on the account of the farm."
On august 1, 1686, the first banns were pronouunced at Albany,for the marriage of isaac Vosburgh and Annatje Jns Goes,daughter of Jan Thyse Goes, as mention above. On April 9, 1713,Pieter Vosburgh sold Isaac a part of the land on Kinderhookcreek, at Papono_ick, and Isaac also bought adjoining land fromDirck We_Els Ten Broeck, which he shortly afterward sold toAbraham Van Alstyne. There is no record of Isaac Vosburghowning land before the year 1713. he may possibly have beenregarded as the owner of one-half of the homestead far, althoughthe title still remained in Pieter's name. isaac Vosburgh wasnot one of the original grantees, in the partition of theKinderhook Patent. The name of isaac Vosburgh and also ofPieter Vosburgh appeat in the several lists of the inhabitantsof Kinderhook, as follows: Census of the City and County ofAlbany, June 16, 1697; a petition of Protestants to King WilliamIII, dated Deceber 3, 1701; inhabitants and freeholders of theCity and County of Albany in 1720. Isaac Vosburgh was a privatein Capt Abraham Van Alstynes company, according to the musterroll of the company, dated September 17, 1715. This wasevidently a Kinderhook company. So far as can be ascertained,he held no public office.
Isaac Vosburgh probably lived to the advanced age of 105 years,and died at Kinderhook about 1760-65. The Balance and ColumbianRepostory was a weekly paper, published at Hudson, N.Y. In itsearly numbers, there appears a very intersting serial articleentitled, "Notes on the Natural History of Kinderhood." In thepart of this aricle published on February 9, 1802, in Volume 2,No. 6, the author mentions that one of the characteristics ofthe town is the logevity of the inhabitants, and cites thefollowing instances:--"Isaac Vosburgh of this place was 105years when he died--Elias Vosburgh was 95--another woman of thesame name was 95." This article was written before the year1802. A careful analysis of all the known Isaacs in theVosburgh family leaves only two that the aricle can refer to. Ido not hesitate to affirm that it is almost a certainty that theIsaac written of here is the one who lived to that advance age.There may be some discrepancy in the age given; that is morethan likely, depending of curse upon where the author obtainedhis information. If he read the iscription on Isaac's grave, itis more likely to be accurate than any tradition handed down,which would possibly have been subject to some exaggeration.The only other Isaac who could have been 105 years old in 1802,is the fourth son of Jacob Vosburgh and dorothea Janse VanAlstyne; he belonged to the Livingston Manor branch of thefamily. It is true that some of this Isaac's brothers wereresidents at Kinderhook after they were married, but the name ofisaac never appears as a sponsor for any of their children. Therecord of this Isaac appears to end with his baptism, as it alsobegins.
