I will give you an extract from it embracing the time previous to your remembrance. Our forefathers were citizens of the county Down, Ireland, near the town of Belfast. Our Grandfather [William Graham] married in that county between 1760 and 1770. His wife's maiden name was Mary McBurney. They were the parents of three children before they left that country. In the year 1774 they sailed for the then New World in company with his brother John and wife. They were 16 weeks making the voyage across the Atlantic Ocean. Their captain lost the course and ran the vessel so far north that they could see mountains of ice - the next in command all the time telling the captain that he was going the wrong course. In the meantime, they had to consign their children to a watery grave, they having died of seasickness and the measles, I think. Also, their provisions and water were almost exhausted-consequently they were dealt out to them by weight and measure. (I have heard my grandfather say that he thought then he would never endure to put his feet into clean fresh water). But finally they landed in New York city, having some acquaintances and distant relatives in Salem, Washington County, NY, they immediately started for that place 200 miles distance on foot, carrying their effects on their backs, through the wilderness, roadless country, infested with savages, wild beasts and venomous reptiles. Poor and penniless, they commenced to clear up the land which they had bargained for, on long time pay, which by hard work and suffering many deprivations they succeeding in making a living and paying for their new home. One thing which added to the other trials and hardships was that the Revolutionary War commenced soon after their arrival in this country and continued 7 long years. Grandfather was out in the Army for a time - was stationed at Ticonderoga. I heard him tell of waking up one morning after sleeping out on the ground on the shore of the lake and found his boots were froze tight on his feet so that he could not walk, and one of his comrades, a large stout man, picked him up (he being a small man) and set him into the lake which thawed his boots so that he could walk. Grandmother was left alone with 2 or 3 small children. One time during the war it was reported that Indians were coming--started for Albany with 2 small children one a babe 6 weeks old which its mother carried nearly 40 miles in one day and that child was our father [George Graham]. They, after coming to America, were blessed with 4 children, 2 sons and 2 daughters, named John, George, Nancy and Jane. John married Margaret Irvine of Cambridge, George (our father) married Ann Cowden of Cambridge. They lived in Salem, one mile north of Sadam or Shushen until the year 1817 when they sold and started for Ohio, the 1st day of September, with a two horse wagon with 7 children, Aunt Margaret and themselves their goods packed in a big box. We were 8 weeks on the road; arrived the 9th day of November. Father soon after purchased 200 acres of land, and during the winter put up a log cabin 30x20, which was moved into the 3rd day of March 1818. She was the oldest of her father's family. Her mother's maiden name was Margaret Crawford; Buel Gillitte's mother's name was Crawford-a full cousin of our mother. William Graham, our grandfather, was born March 17,1750, and died November 15, 1822, in his 73rd year.
