General Notes (Husband)

[bobspu.ged]

Individual note: BIO: As of April, 1995, there has been no confirmation that Grizella and Alexander PARK, I were the parents of William PARK, I. This compiler has presumed their relationship based solely on dates and events the two families have in common. Both men gave their birthplace/nativity as "Dumfries or Dumfrieshire, SCOTLAND." Alexander's tombstone inscription says he emigrated from SCOTLAND in 181_...the last digit is extremely difficult to read, but this compiler feels the date to be 1819. Park W. CARTER located a micro- film which indicates that Alexander and Grizel PARK, aged 55 and 53 respectively, arrived on the Brig, "Susan," 14 June 1819. Port of entry was Philadephia. William's tombstone inscription says he "...came to America 1817...." William and Jane PARK named their first son "Alexander," then two daughters were named "Jane" and "Elizabeth" (probably after Jane and her mother.) A later female child was named "Grizell" and was later reported as "Grace" on U.S. Census. ("Tracing Your Scottish Ancestry," by Kathleen B. Cory, p 70-71, discusses the interchangeable use of these two female names.) Lastly, throughout the 1820-1870 census records, members of the two families appear in close proximity in the Hanover/Saluda areas. In October, 1994, Park W. CARTER located William PARK'S "First Papers" in Jefferson Co., IN. page 224 of Civil Order Book D reads: "William PARKS an alien in order to become a citzen of the United States makes registry and report of himself to the Jefferson Circuit Court and to the clerk thereof. Said PARKS is aged forty years and was born in Dumfrieshire County in SCOTLAND owes allegiance to George the fourth King of Great Britain and its dependencies and on his oath states that he is bona fide his intention to become a citizen of the United States and to renounce all allegiance to any prince potentate state or sovereignty whatever and particularly to George the fourth King of Great Britain and its dependencies whereof which he is at this time a subject. And that the State of Indiana is his intended place of residence."

General Notes (Wife)

[bobspu.ged]

Individual note: BIO: It was not known that Jane or "Jean" ANDERSON (as appeared on the Register of Birth by Proof) was the wife of William PARK, I, until about 1994, when Park W. CARTER responded to compiler's query in ~UTHE GENEALOGICAL HELPER MAGAZINE, ~u. Mr. CARTER knew only that his ancestor was "Jane PARK," and that she was born in SCOTLAND. He and a cousin had researched the family enough that they also had estimated that the PARKS must have emigrated about 1819. Through data compiler had collected on the ANDERSON family via Mrs. KORNS and John M. ANDERSON, and data taken from the Carmel Cemetery stone inscriptions, compiler was able to give Mr. CARTER considerable data re his ancestors; at the same time, data Mr.CARTER had collected enabled us to fill in valuable data re the ANDERSON family. The year of Jane's death is uncertain. The date is not fully legible on the tombstone, and compiler read it as "1867." In Oct. 1994, Mr. CARKER visited Carmel Cemetery; based on traditional data in the PARK family and his own visual examination of the date on the stone, Mr. CARTER felt that Jane's date of death was "1863." In 1870 however, William, age 83, was enumerated in the home of his son, Robert PARK. William's tombstone states that he emigrated from SCOTLAND in 1817. (Jane's parents are believed to have emigrated at about the same time, perhaps two years later.) Although compiler has not found direct reference to Jane (ANDERSON) PARK in the records of the Carmel Assoc. Presb. Church, she and William were hosts for the Moses ARNOTT family at census enumeration time in 1860. ARNOTT was the minister of the Carmel Church for many years following the churches split, and was still minister when Carmel congregation reunited with Bethel Church.

General Notes for Child Alexander Park II

[bobspu.ged]

BIO: Per Civil Order Book C - Oct 1821 to July 1825: "Alexander PARK, an alien in order to become a citizen of the United...comes into court...Signatures: Thos. RHOADS, Wm. RHOADS, Paul DAVIS. (copy owned by Park W. CARTER.) Per MARRIAGE RECORD BOOK (copy owned by Park W. Carter): Married 20 June 1839. Alexander PARK and Elizabeth N. BAIN. Given unto my hand this 5th day of July 1839...James M.HENDERSON. The joint ownership of a parcel of land in Hanover Township of Alexander and Elizabeth (BAIN) PARK and Thomas and Jane (BAIRD) ANDERSON was the first piece of evidence found by compiler to link the PARK, ANDERSON and GILCHRIST families. From this discovery came more and more evidence that the families were related in some way. Church records, tombstones in Carmel Cemetery and naturalization records all contributed to the knowledge that all of these families emigrated from the southern part of SCOTLAND, and most were in this country considerably earlier than James GILCHRIST. The PARK family was evidently rather prominent in the Hanover and Saluda Township area and Alexander and his family remained there for many years. Finally at least three of Alexander and Jane's children relocated to Vermilion County, IL. Tombstone inscriptions photographed and copied by Park W. CARTER, a descendent of Alexander's brother, Thomas, give birth and death dates of William J. and his wife Jane (BAIRD), Elizabeth and her husband Thomas J. HANNA, and Jane, the PARK's daughter who was reportedly blind and never married. All of these members of Alexander's immediate family are buried in the Floral Hills Cemetery near Hoopeston, IL. All died after 1900.

General Notes for Child Thomas Park

[bobspu.ged]

BIO: The following biographical information is taken from that written by Park W. CARTER and based on the research of Mr. CARTER, his cousin, Glenn A. PARK and the copy of the biographical history of Central KANSAS cited in "References," above. Thomas was born and raised in Jefferson County, INDIANA. After his marriage to Jennett MANN in Jefferson County, 1842, the PARKS resided in that county. Three years later, they removed to LaPorte. IN, where they farmed for about 8 years. About 1853, the PARKs moved west to Boone County, IOWA. There Thomas spent some time operating a saw mill. Next, the family moved to Kankakee County, ILLINOIS, where Thomas was a tenent farmer for about six years. After a brief time near Paxton, Ford Co., IL, they resided on a farm near Hoopeston, in Vermilion County, where several of the PARK and HANNA families remained for many years. In 1872, Thomas took his family to Kingman County, KANSAS, near the small town of Waterloo. Then about 1884, Jennett (MANN) PARK's brother Andrew MANN gave his sister 160 acres approximately one mile south of Sterling, KS, in Rice County. Thomas and Jennett PARK raised seven children on their farm near Sterling, and were highly respected members of the community there. Thomas passed away there at the age of 81; Jennett died in Rice County two years later. Compiler found the marriage of Thomas and "Jannett MANN" PARK listed in the marriage index for Jefferson County, IN; per that record, the marriage took place 24 DEC rather than 28 DEC 1842. It is likely that the earlier date is the day the application for marriage was filed.
