Montgomery: David T. Grainger was a member of the Masonic fraternity.
According to the Kentucky Genealogy and Biography, Vol.IV (Kentucky: a History of the State, by Battle-Perrin-Kniffin, 2nd E. 1885-3rd ed. 1886.(page no. not given): David T. Grainger was born in Simpson county, Ky, 2 oct 1837 and is the second of four children born to James and elizabeth Moore Grainger, the former of whom was a native of Sumner Co., Tenn. and the latter a native of Orange Co., N.C. both were of Irish descent. James Garinger received his early education in his native county, as married in Simpson Co., Ky., returning immediately to his home in Tennessee, where he was engaged in farming in connection with blacksmithing, which trade he had learned in early life and followed exclusively for a short time at Independence, Mo. Some time after his marriage he removed to Simpson Co., Ky., and bought a farm near the waters of Spring Creek, upon which he resided until his death, August 19, 1856, in his fort-eighth year. For many years he was a captain in the State Milita. His father, Thomas Grainger, one of the pioneers of Sumner Co., Tenn., erected one of the first horse-mills and gotton-gins in that county. Thomas' brother, James Grainger, was a veteran of the war of 1812, and served under Gen. Jackson at the battle of New Orleans. Mrs. Elizabeth Grainger is yet living, and makes her home with our subject. From her girlhood she has been a devoted member of the Missionary Baptist Church. David T. Grainger received a fair common school education in youth, to which he has since materially added by his own exertions. He has always resided on the old homestead, and has also added to it, now owning a well improved farm of 128 acres. After his father's death, the care and support of his widowed mother and brother and sisters devolved mainly to him. He married, 22 Dec 1871, Mary J. Gillespy, a native of Simpson county, Ky., born 19 Mar 1848. She is a daughter of Nelson and Rebecca (Evans) Gillespy. Two sons and two daughters have blessed their union: Orpha R., Thomas E., Samuel A. and Mattie E. Mr. Grainger belongs to no church, but is a member of the Masonic fraternity, having held various official positions in his Lodge, he was formerly a member of the Grange. Mrs. Grainger has been from early life a member of the Missionary Baptist Church. In politics Mr. Grainger is a Democrat, and is one of the native born, prominent and successful farmers. ***************************
