BIO: (The following paragraph has been taken from the "Introduction" of the AUG. 1982, "abbreviated family history" written by John M. ANDERSON, Tulsa, OK. Mr. ANDERSON is a descendent of "Scotch John" and his second wife, Catharine BROOKIE.)
"The patriarch of our Anderson family, John Anderson, acquired the nickname "Scotch John" when he moved to Jefferson County, IN in 1812. Even though the total population of his township was only about 500, another John Anderson had recently moved there, was about the same age, and belonged to the same church. Because the other John Anderson was born in Pennsylvania, while our John was an immigrant from Scotland, our ancestor became known as "Scotch John" in order to differentiate between the two men....."
Per the research of John M. ANDERSON, "Scotch John" was the oldest of nine children of Thomas and Elizabeth BECK ANDERSON, natives of Dumfrieshire, Scotland. The father was a tenant farmer in the Parish of JOHNSTONE, West Blackburn, Dumfries. The "Register of Births by Proof" documented at Johnstone school house 22 OCT, 1801 indicates that all nine children were born at West Blackburn. By 1810, "Scotch John" was involved in property deeds recorded in Greene County, OH. In 1812 he purchased from the U.S., 160 acres in Jefferson Co., IN just one mile south of where the Carmel Presbyterian Church stood. He appeared on the tax lists of Jefferson Co. in 1815. In 1820, "Scotch John", his wife, five male children between 0-16 and one female under 10 were enumerated in the county. One person was engaged in the pursuit of agriculture and one was a "foreigner not naturalized". Later research indicates that "Scotch John" was probably the first of his family to emigrate from SCOTLAND. His parents, two unmarried sisters and youngest brother are thought to have arrived in the U.S. about 1818. At least three of "Scotch John's" sons are thought to be born in OHIO. Robert, the 4th son of the first marriage, was born in INDIANA about 1814. There was another son and possibly a daughter born to this union after Robert's birth. After the death of his first wife, John married Catharine BROOKIE in Jefferson County, IN. This marriage had six more children. The family left Jefferson County about July, 1829 to re-locate in Montgomery County, IN. By 1835 the family had again moved, this time to Tippecanoe Township in Carroll County, IN, where they remained until after John's death. John wrote his last will and testament shortly after the 1854 epidemic of Asiatic Cholera which took the lives of many people in the area; however, he lived until June, 1870.Source: Elizabeth (Ann) Gilchrist-Jun 1998-Andersn.GED

BIO: John M. ANDERSON, in his research of the ANDERSON and BROOKIE families, has documented that Catharine and "Scotch John" were married by Rev. Andrew ISAAC, minister of the Carmel Associte Presbyterian Church near Hanover, IN. The site of this church is now marked by the location of the Carmel Cemetery; the building is no longer standing. Catharine is believed to have been a sister or cousin to William BROOKIE, who was a carpenter and farmer, living in Oldham County, KY by 1821. He had lived 8 miles southwest of Hanover before the BROOKIE-ANDERSON marriage. At the time of the marriage, "Scotch John" was a widower with at least 5 sons; there is some evidence that there also was a daughter born to John and his first wife. In 1827, Catharine gave birth to a daughter and in 1829, a son was born to this couple. About July, 1829, Catharine and John moved to Montgomery County, IN. In the spring of 1832, word came to the area of Indian attacks on settlements in Eastern ILLINOIS. A rumor, which later was proved to be false, spread over the community that the area was soon to be under attack. Many of the families ran to the shelter of the blockhouses in panic, but the attack never came. In addition to the Indian threat, the area was wet and swampy; the nearest known congregation of the Associate Presbyterian Church was too far away for the family to be actively involved on a regular basis. For these reasons, the ANDERSONs again re-located. In 1834, they purchased 200 acres from the U.S. in Tippecanoe Township, Carroll County, IN. By the time of the move to Carroll County, they had two more daughters. An Associate Presbyterian congregation had been organized in 1830 about 10 miles from the ANDERSON home. In 1834, the church decided to form 2 congregations. The "branch" closest to the ANDERSONs was named "Pleasant Run". The Associate or "SECEDER" faction of the Presbyterian Church held to the very strict, fundamental doctrines of the old church in SCOTLAND: musical instruments were not permitted, the only music was the singing of the Psalms; only members in good standing, after being examined and approved, were admitted to communion, etc. The church stood firmly against slavery, intoxication, profanity, games of chance, dancing and secret societies. "They were particularly strict in enforcing the behavior of their children and in maintaining control of their church at the local level." (Ref.#1, p.9) The last two of Catherine's children were born in Carroll County in 1837 and 1842. Sometime in 1837, William BROOKIE and his family moved to Carroll County. He died there and his widow and 10 children remained in the county; "Scotch John" served as administrator of William's estate. In August, 1839, Robert, one of Catharine's step-sons, married Mary Ann BROOKIE, eldest daughter of William and Margaret BROOKIE and niece/cousin to Catharine. In 1850, the Carroll County census listed John ANDERSON, age 64, with his wife, Catharine, age 50. Catharine survived her husband by about six years. John M. ANDERSON writes on p. 16 of his booklet, "...and it is assumed that she was buried next to Scotch John, though apparently no one ever got around to placing an inscription in the space left for her on his tombstone..."
