BIO: The wife of David L. LAY, son of Jack and Polly (O'DELL) LAY was first identified by Bill HEINLE, a desc. of David's younger brother, Elijah LAY. Later Eva McCARTY, a desc. of Elisha LAY, Elijah's twin brother, wrote the following about Annis Elizabeth: "...David married Annis Elizabeth TAYLOR on Sept. 9, 1866 Campbell Co. TN. I don't know the year David and Elizabeth moved to Oklahoma and on to Baca County, Colorado. David passed away July 17,1927 in Baca County Colorado. Told to me by Billie Lou Phillips Dayton, Ohio grand daughter of David and Elizabeth. Elizabeth was blind at the time of David's death. Billie Lou said, that David wanted to be laid out under a big tree in the front yard, and that when they brought Elizabeth out for the funeral, she looked down in the casket and said, 'doesn't he look pretty.'"
Per the 1870 census "Ann" was 22 years old; she was born in TN. On the next census for Campbell Co., "Anis E." was enumerated as "34." On the latter, she reported her father born in SC and her mother in NC.
May 1997: Compiler established contact with Steve STAMM, a descendent of David L. and Elizabeth (TAYLOR) LAY. In an E-mail message on 25 May, Steve wrote the following in response to a statement by compiler that the date was not known for the move of this couple to OK and CO, "...The year is now known!...a note written by Annis Elizabeth LAY in 1915 which details their move to Colorado from Tennessee. The Lay Trip West David Lay and Lizzie Lay started from Tennessee on January 27, 1913 got to Liberal Kansas Feb. 1. Went to Lizzie Nickardsons, a daughter, in Lorena, Okla, Feb 2nd, then went to see the rest of the children. Celia McNew, Dave Lay, Eva Meltabarger etc. stayed in Oklahoma until March 28, 1914, then came to Baca Co. Colorado. Got here April 2, 1914. Stayed at the Meltabargers, (who had come on out from Okla the last of April 1913) until the 17th and filed on our claim and planted our crop and stayed here til the 6th day of August, then went back to Oklahoma to see the children. Came back here the 6th day of Sept and gathered our crop, then went back to Oklahoma the 3rd day of Dec and stayed until the 25th day of Feb. and got back here the 3rd day of March. Was 7 days on the road. Drove through the snow a little every day except one day and a half we stopped. And it snowed most all the time on our trip. Wrote by Lizzie Lay this March the 13th 1915
01 June 1997: Steve STAMM mailed the first of several packets of information on the LAY family to compiler. This one contained a photocopy of the death certificate of Annis E. LAY, which provided the identities of her parents, her birthplace and date of birth, the place of birth of her father, and the name of the cemetery wher she was interred. The informant for the death certificate was Mrs. H. M. PARKER, "Lizzie's" daughter, Nancy P. PARKER.
