Biography: Extracted by Patricia Hannon (celticone@toledotel.com) November 3, 1998 from Watkins' History of Noble County, 1887: "He was the last surviving soldier of the American army in the Revolutionary War." Because of this, his name is to be found in the poetry and prose of many talented writers. John Gray was born 6 January 1764 near Mount Vernon, VA. He was poor all of his life. His first of employment was at Mount Vernon by George Washington. John Gray was the eldest of 8 children and was his family's chief supporter when his father joined the patriot army in 1777. His father died in the Battle of White Plains. In 1781 John Gray, age 18, volunteered. He was present at the surrender of Cornwallis. He married Nancy Dowell when he was 20 years old. They moved to Morgantown, VA. John married his second wife, Nancy Ragan at the Flats of Grave Creek in Noble County, OH. It says that he married again, but does not give information on who she was. He survived his wife and all but one child (Mrs. Nancy McElroy). He died 29 March 1868, age 105 years. His pension was not obtained until 1867. John Gray stood 5' 8", was broad-chested, but thin. He chewed tobacco for most of his life. He was a member of the Methodist church.

m1. Unknown Hemprick? m2. Henry McElroy
* Uncertain which of John Gray's three wives is the mother of Nancy. Second seems most likely. * Very probably the Nancy Hamrick that Henry McElroy married in 1849. * Very probably buried in McElroy Cemetery under an unreadable marker.
Nancy first married HAMRICK? [2].
