INFORMATION: From a newspaper clipping about Alton Elmer Green and Leona Mayo Southern's 50 Wedding Anniversary in 1964.
Alton Elmer Green married Leona Mayo Southern on December 27, 1914 in Paducah, Texas. They traveled by covered wagon in May 1915 to Branson, Colorado, homesteading 13 miles northeast of Branson, where Mr. Green operated a cattle ranch until his retirement.
The Greens made the long trip to Branson in three weeks, accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Lee Cook (Mrs. Green's sister and brother-in-law). In relating their eventful trip, the Greens recall the crossing of the Canadian River near Tucumcari, NM as the most hazardous event as the horses had to swim across the river and there was constant danger of the wagons overturning or being washed down stream.
DEATH: Obituary reads: Elmer Green, 83, former Trinidad area resident, died Saturday, Feb 18, 1978 at a Pueblo hospital. He was born Sept 18, 1894 in Glen Rose, Texas. He attended schools in Texas and in 1915 moved to Branson where he farmed.
On Dec 27, 1914 he was married to Leona Mayo Southern in Paducah, Texas. Mr. Green was a member of the Branson Community Church.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Leona May who died Dec 13, 1973. Mr. Green is survived by five sons, Alton Green of Nathrop, Ray Green of Des Moines, New Mexico; Norman Green of Steamboat Springs, Dale Green of Denver, and Howard Green of Earthrage, Missouri; four daughters, Nellie Harvey of Pueblo, Mamie Medford of Clayton, New Mexico; Ruth Brady of Peratra, New Mexico; and June Robertson of Villegreen; two sisters, Mahalie McCleary of Paducah, Texas and Ena Long of Amarillo, Texas; and two sisters-in-law, Lillian Green of Alton, Texas and Eunice Walker of Delta.
Services for Mr. Green will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Campbell-Lewis-Swickard Memorial Chapel with the Rev Maynard Bowen officiating. Interment follows in the Masonic Cemetery.
Honorary pallbears for Mr. Green will be Diego Bachicha, Walt Cummins, Bill Fry, Ray Kile, Roy McMillan, Charlie Mitchell and Tom Russell.
Active pall bearers will be grandsons, Craig Green, Lester Green, Bobby Harvey, Roy Lynn Green, Jerry Medford and Lon Robertson.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Campbell-Lewis-Swickard Memorial Chapel.
