On the 1851 census John was an agricultural labourer, age 19. According to his marriage certificate, his residence at the time of his marriage was Speen, he was age 28, and he was a labourer. On the 1881 census, he was a labourer. On the 1891 census, John was an agricultural labourer, age 61; he and his family were in Widmer End, Civil Parish of Hughenden, Buckingham. On his son Ben's birth certificate, he was a farm labourer. On the marriage certificate of his son Ben to Gertrude Sadd in 1911, his profession was stated as engineer and he was 'deceased'.

On the 1851 census Mary was age 11, born in Speen. According to her marriage certificate, her residence at the time of her marriage was Speen, she was age 21, and she was a lace maker. On the 1851 and the 1881 census, Mary was a lace maker. On the 1881 census her age was 43. On the 1891 census she was age 51, in Widmer End, Civil Parish of Hughenden.

His birth was in the district of West Wycombe, in the registration district of Wycombe, in the Counties of Buckingham and Oxford.

St Michael and all Angels is commonly called the church in the park as it is in the middle of Hughenden Park, once owned by Disraeli, the Victorian Prime Minister.

On the 1881 census Ben was age 10 months; on the 1891 census he was a scholar, age 10, in Widmer End, Civil Parish of Hughenden. Ben enlisted in the Dorset Regiment in 1896, in London. His residence at the time of his marriage was 79 Beechcroft Road. From 1909 to 1934 he served in V then P Division in the Metropolitan Police Force; his police number was 123. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren's pet name for him was Popeye.
