Individual note: BIO: Per Mrs. Korns, tradition has it that Thomas and Elizabeth(Betsy) ANDERSON came to the U.S. with their three youngest children to join the older ones who were already here. They did not want to die "alone" in the "Old Country" separated from part of their family. Once here and living in Jefferson County, they became so homesick for SCOTLAND that they grieved themselves to death. Because Thomas was born in 1804 this would indicate that they arrived here sometime between 1805 and 1821. The oldest son, "Scotch" John purchased land in Jefferson Co. in 1812.

BIO: (The following paragraph has been taken from the "Introduction" of the AUG. 1982, "abbreviated family history" written by John M. ANDERSON, Tulsa, OK. Mr. ANDERSON is a descendent of "Scotch John" and his second wife, Catharine BROOKIE.)
"The patriarch of our Anderson family, John Anderson, acquired the nickname "Scotch John" when he moved to Jefferson County, IN in 1812. Even though the total population of his township was only about 500, another John Anderson had recently moved there, was about the same age, and belonged to the same church. Because the other John Anderson was born in Pennsylvania, while our John was an immigrant from Scotland, our ancestor became known as "Scotch John" in order to differentiate between the two men....."
Per the research of John M. ANDERSON, "Scotch John" was the oldest of nine children of Thomas and Elizabeth BECK ANDERSON, natives of Dumfrieshire, Scotland. The father was a tenant farmer in the Parish of JOHNSTONE, West Blackburn, Dumfries. The "Register of Births by Proof" documented at Johnstone school house 22 OCT, 1801 indicates that all nine children were born at West Blackburn. By 1810, "Scotch John" was involved in property deeds recorded in Greene County, OH. In 1812 he purchased from the U.S., 160 acres in Jefferson Co., IN just one mile south of where the Carmel Presbyterian Church stood. He appeared on the tax lists of Jefferson Co. in 1815. In 1820, "Scotch John", his wife, five male children between 0-16 and one female under 10 were enumerated in the county. One person was engaged in the pursuit of agriculture and one was a "foreigner not naturalized". Later research indicates that "Scotch John" was probably the first of his family to emigrate from SCOTLAND. His parents, two unmarried sisters and youngest brother are thought to have arrived in the U.S. about 1818. At least three of "Scotch John's" sons are thought to be born in OHIO. Robert, the 4th son of the first marriage, was born in INDIANA about 1814. There was another son and possibly a daughter born to this union after Robert's birth. After the death of his first wife, John married Catharine BROOKIE in Jefferson County, IN. This marriage had six more children. The family left Jefferson County about July, 1829 to re-locate in Montgomery County, IN. By 1835 the family had again moved, this time to Tippecanoe Township in Carroll County, IN, where they remained until after John's death. John wrote his last will and testament shortly after the 1854 epidemic of Asiatic Cholera which took the lives of many people in the area; however, he lived until June, 1870.Source: Elizabeth (Ann) Gilchrist-Jun 1998-Andersn.GED

General Notes for Child Jane Or Jean Anderson
[bobspu.ged]
Individual note: BIO: It was not known that Jane or "Jean" ANDERSON (as appeared on the Register of Birth by Proof) was the wife of William PARK, I, until about 1994, when Park W. CARTER responded to compiler's query in ~UTHE GENEALOGICAL HELPER MAGAZINE, ~u. Mr. CARTER knew only that his ancestor was "Jane PARK," and that she was born in SCOTLAND. He and a cousin had researched the family enough that they also had estimated that the PARKS must have emigrated about 1819. Through data compiler had collected on the ANDERSON family via Mrs. KORNS and John M. ANDERSON, and data taken from the Carmel Cemetery stone inscriptions, compiler was able to give Mr. CARTER considerable data re his ancestors; at the same time, data Mr.CARTER had collected enabled us to fill in valuable data re the ANDERSON family. The year of Jane's death is uncertain. The date is not fully legible on the tombstone, and compiler read it as "1867." In Oct. 1994, Mr. CARKER visited Carmel Cemetery; based on traditional data in the PARK family and his own visual examination of the date on the stone, Mr. CARTER felt that Jane's date of death was "1863." In 1870 however, William, age 83, was enumerated in the home of his son, Robert PARK. William's tombstone states that he emigrated from SCOTLAND in 1817. (Jane's parents are believed to have emigrated at about the same time, perhaps two years later.) Although compiler has not found direct reference to Jane (ANDERSON) PARK in the records of the Carmel Assoc. Presb. Church, she and William were hosts for the Moses ARNOTT family at census enumeration time in 1860. ARNOTT was the minister of the Carmel Church for many years following the churches split, and was still minister when Carmel congregation reunited with Bethel Church.

General Notes for Child Mary Anderson
[bobspu.ged]
Individual note: BIO: Until Dec. 1993, very little was known about Mary (ANDERSON) GILCHRIST except that she was born in SCOTLAND; married James GILCHRIST in Jefferson Co. in 1826; gave birth to 2 sons, James and Thomas and a daughter, probably named Janet or Jennett, and died on 01 Jan 1877. In response to a query published in the "Genealogical Helper Magazine," contact was established with Virginia Korns, a descendent of Mary's younger brother, Thomas ANDERSON. Through correspondence with Mrs. KORNS, compiler established contact with John M. ANDERSON, a descendent of Mary's oldest brother. Mr. ANDERSON has not only done extensive research on Mary ANDERSON's family, but has also visited the tenant farm in SCOTLAND where the ANDERSON children were born, and is in the process of writing a book about the family. We now have documentation that Mary was born in Johnstone Parish, on a farm called West Blackburn, in the county of Dumfries in SCOTLAND on 08 DEC 1799. (Mary's tombstone reads, "Born in SCOTLAND, April 15, 1800.") Mary's parents were Thomas and Elizabeth/Bridget "Betsy" (BECK) ANDERSON. They were tenant farmers on the JOHNSTONE estate. Mary was the eighth of nine children born to the couple there. Although we are unsure as to exactly when Mary's family immigrated from SCOTLAND, we have evidence that her older brother "Scotch John" was in Greene Co., OH by 1812 when he purchased a quarter-section of land in Jefferson Co. (then Clark Co.) from the U.S. Land Office in Jeffersonville, IN. Evidence points to an approximate arrival in INDIANA of 1818 for Mary, her parents, her sister, Margaret, and the youngest Anderson child, Thomas, who was not born until 1804. There is also evidence that other members of the family came to the Jefferson County area before their parents with the PARK family. Family tradition, passed on by Mrs. Korns, reports that the parents followed "Scotch John" and other older siblings to the U.S. because the "old folks" did not want to die separated from the rest of the family. The story continues that once here, the parents became so homesick for SCOTLAND that they grieved themselves to death. Whether this is true or not, the couple died within a short time after they settled in Jefferson County. Mary was not quite 23 when her parents died, and she did not marry James GILCHRIST until about 4 years later. At the time of her parent's death young Thomas, about 17, went to the court as an orphan and chose Thomas TAYLOR as his guardian. TAYLOR entered bond of $1000.00. Where Mary lived at this time is not known, nor is the relationship between the ANDERSONs and the TAYLOR family known, but it may be significant that Thomas TAYLOR served as executor for the senior Thomas ANDERSON's will. Also, Elizabeth GILCHRIST, the first born child of James and Mary is buried beside Thomas TAYLOR and his wife in the TAYLOR family plot at the Carmel Cemetery, Hanover Township,Jefferson County, Indiana Cemetery, near Hanover, Indiana. "NEWSPAPER EXCERPTS", Vol 7, 1877, Fulton Co. Library, Rochester, IN, carries the obituary of Mary (ANDERSON) GILCHRIST on page 137, which reads as follows: DIED. -On New Year's night, Mrs. GILCHRIST. Her death was caused by old age and infirmity. Mr. and Mrs. GILCHRIST emigrated to this country from SCOTLAND many years ago. By patient toiling they secured for themselves a comfortable home, and lived to a ripe old age. The old gentleman departed this life some two months ago, and she has gone to join him in the better land. Never was a neighborhood blest with more honest, accommodating and useful neighbors than were Mr. and Mrs. GILCHRIST. They died as they had lived, loved and esteemed by all, and are at peace with God and man....
