General Notes (Husband)

..Joseph Elias PRICE-Gladys May PRICE PRR00001.TXT ..edited March 7, 1996 The father of Joseph Elias Price was Charles H. Garson. However, Joseph was raised by his stepfather, Robert C. Price. Since he liked his stepfather much better than his biological father, he started using Price for his last name and had it legally changed 25 Apr 1935. Joseph Elias Price completed the sixth grade, then worked at various jobs, such as ranches in Wyoming, until he became a lineman with the American Telephone and Telegraph Co. This job took him all over Colorado while putting up wires between cities. Quite often the crew moved every three to four weeks. In 1936, he obtained a position as telephone installer in Colorado Springs, CO. with the Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph Co. He then held various positions related to repairing and installing switch boards. During WWII he was assigned to Camp Hale (Pando) near Leadville, CO, and later spent several years at Fort Carson. He ended his 42 year career with the phone company at Ent Air Force Base where he was in charge of the dial equipment for the base. After retiring, Joe maintained the golf carts at Patty Jewett for a number of years. He occasionally worked on carts at other courses. They had planned on eloping, but Gladys' mother got wind of the plan and organized a small wedding at the Hagar house. Joe was working with the construction crew in the mountains at that time. The day before the wedding a snow storm hit and there was great concern about him making it to Denver that day. He let most of the air out of the tires of his model A Ford and was able to drive on top of the snow. People in the towns that he passed through said that he was the only one to drive the road that day since no one else thought to drive on top of the snow like he did. Joe and Gladys had planned on celebrating their 50'th wedding anniversary by spending a few days at resorts in the Colorado mountains, but it snowed so much that they had to cancel their plans and they spent the time in Colorado Springs digging out their sidewalks. They were on their way to Yellowstone Park on September 7, 1928 when an uninsured taxi ran a stop sign in Denver and hit them broadside on the passenger side. Gladys spent six months in the hospital flat on her back while her broken pelvis mended. Joreen died a few weeks later due to an ear infection. He was an avid golfer and he won a few tournaments. He was especially good at making long drives. Most of his golfing was done at Patty Jewett golf course which was near the house that he and his wife occupied from 1937 to 1985 at 1917 N. Royer St. Shortly after moving into this house he enlarged the basement using hand tools to break up some cement walls and hauling dirt out using buckets. One of the previous occupants of the house had built a large bedroom onto the back of the house and left a window in the wall between the this room and the bathroom. About the first major project on the house that was undertaken by Joseph Elias was to replace the window with a door, so the bath room had two doors leading into it from it opposite ends. He made a number of improvements on this house, such as adding on a bedroom to the east of the dinning room. Joe made a bed headboard and footboard for this room out of oak. Most of the oak came from a couple of old telephone booths. He also converted the coal furnace from one big hot air outlet in the living room to outlets in each room. Later a stoker was added and even later the furnace was changed to a gas fired furnace. After retiring, he redid the plumbing and rewired the house. The Masonic Order also was of great interest to him. He was a 32'nd Degree Mason (Nov. 1943) and was a member of several initiation teams. He was also a member of the I.O.O.F., Union No. 1 of Denver (19 Nov 1934), Masons, El Paso No. 13 A.F.& A.M., Colorado Springs (Aug 1937), Communication Workers of America, Patty Jewett Golf Club (1940), and Telephone Pioneers (Aug 1944). After retiring, Joseph held several offices in the Colorado Springs Telephone Pioneer section, including president and board member. As a regional officer, he and Gladys attended a number of meetings in nearby towns, and throughout the United States. Gladys lacked a year in finishing high school. She and her sister got jobs at Brachs candy factory. She also liked to skate and she talked about skating around the Denver Civic Center. She also joined the Patty Jewett golf club and was active with Joe in the golf association for a number of years. Although Gladys never went up the chairs in Eastern Star, she was an active member. She worked on a number of committees and projects, including the newsletter. Both Gladys and Joe liked to play cards. He was good at rummy, and she participated in several bridge and canasta groups. They also hosted poker and pinochle parties. After Joe's retirement, they took a Caribbean cruise in Oct. 1980 and visited Jim and family in Germany during April 1972. They also made a number of visits to Jim and family when they were in the States as well as going to Pocatello to visit Joseph Earl and family. From the dates on snapshots it was possible to determine that they took the following trips: ??/34 toured CA 6/48 Eleven Mile Canyon, CO camping trip 8/49 Cottonwood Springs, CO camping trip 8/50?MO ??/50 Grand Junction, CO 9/52 Galveston, TX help move Joe to Rice, Jim was along 8/55 Mesa Verde, CO 5/56 Houston, TX for graduation of Joe from Rice 11/59, 12/68, 4/69, 4/70, 11/70, 10/72, 3/73, 4/74, 10/76 Pocatello, ID 2/60 Joe went to Washington, DC 7/60 Boy Scout World Jamboree, north of Colorado Springs 10/60 Hawaii 8/62 SD-for wedding of Joe & Nola 8/67, 9/71, 7/75 Cripple Creek, CO 11/68, 11/76 Georgia to visit Jim 4/72 Europe to see Jim 9/73 ride steam train CO 3/74 Scottsdale & Phoenix, AZ 10/74 Houston, TX space center 6/75 toured northwest-OR, WA, BC, Teton Park, Yellowstone Park, Lassen Park, Lake Tahoe- both sons went on this trip 5/76 Cheyenne, WY 5/78 Casper, WY ??/79 Desert Springs, CA 4/81 Caribbean cruise on tss Festival, the "Fun Ship", Carnival Cruise Lines

General Notes (Wife)

..Gladys May HAGAR PRR00002.TXT ..edited March 7, 1996 Gladys liked to tell about the great fun that she had while roller skating in the Denver Civic Center area with Helen and Hazel Hixson. Also being rather mean on Halloween night when they did such things as pull the trolley off of the streetcar wire so that motorman would have to get out and put the trolley back on the overhead wire before the car could continue. When she got older, about her last year in high school, Gladys and her sister, Marie, went to work for Brach's Candy Company in Denver. Then she got married and never graduated from high school.
