Letter by Sterling Van Buren Roper to a newspaper in Howell Co. MO: Shinkle MO Dear Comrade: As we are now just entering into another four years of democratic administration, I will try to drop a few thoughts in the minds of your readers as we have got to exchange views with each other in order to try to take the right step. I claim that the past four years of our administration has been the worst draw back to the laboring people we have ever experienced. Our government officials had aught of known that the shipping of our food stuff to the waring nations would cause a food famine in America; they did know it but they readily seen that there was a chance to fill the pockets of the American speculators by so doing. So it seems to me like they have shown but little sympathy for the produces of wealth.

It strikes me very sensibly that the capitalists leaders of America knew good and well that this food famine that the capitalist brought upon the laboring people would stand a good show to rouse the laborers of America up to the protest point. So the next thing they urged for was a bigger and a stronger navy, claiming it for the protection of our nation. Can you see? They knew well and good that this food famine would cause the ambition to rise in all laboring people, and probably cause trouble, so they seen fit to increase the navy. So if the laboring poeple should try to fight for their rights the navy would be ready to call us down. I am a farmer and limited on book learning. But I can think when a stunt like that is shoved in my face.

It is inhuman for the head officials of our nation to take the bread from the poor American children and cause the angry ambition of American laborers to run so high; then to think that our officials would set a day for prayer to bring about peace in the land, and at the same time feeding the warring nations so they might be more able to fight. Such prayer as this is not related to a heart felt prayer. It is folly, nonsense, and fogyism.

Now, I am not fighting prayer. I was raised by praying parents and I believe in prayer being the sole sincere desire of the heart. But when a man prays one way and acts another by upholding grait robbery and theft, he is only praying for self-praise and much rather God wouldn't hear him. This is only a short lesson of my views by studying over the past legislation. Hoping others will give it a thought.

Yours for justice, S.V. Roper
