General Notes for Child Arthur Peronneau
ARTHUR PERONNEAU (Henry, Henry) was baptized on March 1 8, 1735, by the Rev. Nathan Bassett of the Circular Church . As a Charleston merchant, he was engaged in the indigo tr ade, and with his brother Henry, owned an interest in a mer chant ship trading with Europe. Upon his death on October 1 5. 1774, he left his family 'in easy and affluent circumsta nces," with an estate consisting of several buildings on Br oad Street, Charleston, and "a considerable amount in goo d and well secured Bonds.'
Arthur Peronneau married on June 10, 1762, Mary Hutson , born in 1744, the daughter of Rev. William Hutson, minister of the Circul ar Church, and Mary Woodward. During the British occupation of Charlesto n in 1781, Mary Hutson Peronneau unsuccessfully appealed to Lord Rawdon i n order to try to save the life of her brother-in-law, Col. Isaac Hayne, a pa triot who was hanged by the British for taking up arms against them. For her eff orts, Alexander Garden wrote that "Mrs. Arthur Peronneau .. . Is richly ent itled to a place among the most distinguished of our female patriots.'' Art hur and Mary Peronneau are both probably buried in the Peronneau Vault i n the Circular Churchyard, where Mary's brother Richard Hutson, Continenta l Congressman and first Intendant (Mayor) of Charleston, is also buried.
General Notes for Child Henry Peronneau
HENRY PERONNEAU (III) (Henry,2 Henryl) was born betwee n 1728 when his parents were married. and 1752, when he wa s mentioned in the will of his grandfather, Col Arthur Hall . He lived in St. Philip's Parish, Charleston where he bec ame a successful merchant and was prominent in local affair s, serving as a commissioner and justice of the peace. Unli ke other members of the family, Henry Peronneau was an Angl ican, and owned a pew in St Michael's Church. He was elect ed to the Royal Assembly in 1765, and served as Public Trea surer of the Colony from 1770 to 1776. A staunch loyalist , Henry Peronneau was banished from South Carolina for refu sing to take an oath of allegiance to the new government i n 1777, and took refuge in London. He returned to Charlesto n in 1781, but upon evacuation of the British troops in 178 2, he returned to England and settled permanently.
Henry Peronneau married on May 14, 1752, Anne Motte, bor n April 3, 1734, daughter of Jacob Motte and Elizabeth Mart in. They apparently had no children. Henry Peronneau died i n England on September 9, 1786, survived by his wife Anne . In his will dated July 29, 1786, and proved November l5 , 1786, he left his estate to his wife and to his nieces an d nephews. Anne Motte Peronneau died in England in late 181 3 or early 1814, "in Southampton-row, Bloomsbury, in her 80 th year".

JAMES PERONNEAU (Henry,2 Henry 1) was also born sometime a fter 1732. Like his brother Robert, he was sent abroad to get a n education, studying law in London at Middle Temple, where he was admitted a s a member in 1768. He returned to Charleston to practice his profession , but unlike his brothers Henry and Robert, James Peronneau espoused the Col onial cause for independence In 1775, he was appointed lieutenant in the Se cond Regiment of Provincial troops under Col William Moultrie, and in 1776 w as stationed at Sullivan's Island.
James Peronneau died unmarried in June 1, "a young Gen tleman much esteemed by his Acquaintance'' After the fall of Charlesto n and during British occupation in 1781, James Peronneau's estate, value d at over ten thousand pounds, was divided by his brothers and sisters.
