General Notes for Child William Wilcox

William Wilcox sold his farm in Sandisfield in 1816 , a n d m o ved with his family to Middlebury, OH, near whe re A kr on n o w stands. They traveled by ox team, having t hre e yok e o f ox en, one horse, and two wagons. Among th e goo ds wer e 20 0 pou nds of wool which his wife, Lucinda , late r carde d, sp un, an d made into garments for the fa mily.Th eir jour ney la sted fo rty-one days and was quit e tedious . At one p oint th ey wer e delayed at Lima, NY , for five d ays due t o the illn ess o f a child, Emily, a nd another ti me by an i njury to Wi lliam' s knee. The property in Middlebury, which William had purchas e d s i t e unseen, turned out to be unsuitable. In 1818 th e y rem ov e d to Deerfield after having made an exchang e o f the or igi na l land for better property in the easte rn p art of De erfi el d Township on the Mahoning River. Wi llia m is quote d as s ayi ng at that time, "I have blunder ed o n a good far m." His health failed, and on June 22, 1828, he died a t t h e a g e of fifty-one. ------- To all people to whom these presents shall come, Gree t i n g . General Notes (Husband)

SAMUEL MOSS, son of John Moss and Martha Lothrop, w a s b o r n in Wallingford, Conn., November 10, 1680. He re ce iv e d b y deed from his father, January 26, 1714, his h om e lo t , orc hard, house and pasture in Wallingford, an d hi s bro th er Joh n Moss deeded to him his interest in t he ho mestea d t hat wa s his father's, May 17, 1720. [Wall ingfor d Lan d Reco rds, II : 495; III: 320.] This was hi s home an d pass ed to h is desce ndants. He also owned oth er lands i n Walli ngford , but was n ot an extensive lan d owner. He d eeded, l ater, o ne-half of h is homestead t o his son Theop hilus, an d doubtl ess lived wit h him th e latter part of h is life. I n 1742, h e deeded to hi s so n Isaiah land lai d out to hi m on the rig ht of his sist e r, Mary Munson. H e was a Deaco n in the chur ch there fo r man y years.

Deacon Samuel Moss died in Wallingford, July 29, 17 6 5 . H e i s buried in the cemetery in the center of the v il la ge a nd h is gravestone bears the following epitaph : I n Mem or y | of M r Deacon | Samuel Moss | he Died Jul y y e 29t h | 17 65 in y e 85th year | of his Age. | The Sw ee t Rememb rance o f The ju st | Shall flourish When the y Sle ep in Dus t. In hi s will, d ated July 5, 1749, Samue l Mos s bequeathe d to hi s wife, Susa nnah, the use of one -hal f of the homes tead an d one-third o f his movable est ate . He also mention ed his s ons, Theophilu s, Samuel, an d Is aiah, and his si x daughters , Martha the wi fe of Sam uel R oyse, Esther th e wife of Joe l Canfield, Sara h th e wife o f Jonathan Chapi n, Keziah th e wife of Isaac Le w is, Bethi ah, the wife of J ohn Canfield , and Lois the w ife o f Davi d Cook, Jr. "To th e first or el dest Church o f Chris t i n said Wallingford" h e bequeathed t hree pound s. [New Ha v en Probate Records, X : 285, 286.] O n Octobe r 23, 1765 , th e daughters agreed t o a division o f the m ovable esta te acco rding to the will , "leaving Mothe r Mo ss her third s." In thi s agreement, Es ther Canfield i s t ermed "Admini strator of Jo el Canfield' s estate of Sayb r ook." [Walling ford Land Record s, XVI: 24 9.]

The marriage of Samuel Moss is recorded at Wallingf o r d a s f ollows: "Sam" Mof maried Suseanah Hall by Mr St re e t 15t h o f Defember, 1703-4." Her gravestone in the W all in gfor d ceme tery has this epitaph: In Memory of | Mr s Su san na h | ye Wif e of Deacon | Samuel Moss | She Die d Mar c h | y e 4th 1766 i n ye | 83d year of | her age.

The ancestry of Susannah Hall is somewhat uncertain , b u t s h e is believed to have been the daughter of Samu el H al l a n d Hannah Walker. According to her age at deat h sh e wa s bo r n in 1684.
