General Notes (Husband)
[18401.ged]
The only data found on William H. Andrews is the 1860 census from Summit County, Ohio, showing his occupation as "farmer".[Downing.ged]
William H. Andrews is the 1860 census from Summit County, Ohio, showing his occupation as "farmer". An update on the Redfield book on LDS film 1697428 shows his occupation as "carpenter". He served in the 19th Ohio volunteers during the Civil War. Pension records ordered from National Archives confirm data. It appears that he and Adeline moved to Humboldt, KS, from Ohio in 1866. W. H. Andrews is mentioned several times in "The History of Humboldt, Kansas", as an early civic leader of the town. Further research on the family from the Humboldt Genealogical Society, Humboldt, KS., turned up his 1902 obituary in the Humboldt Union. It stated the cause of death was hemorrhage. He served in various public offices in Humboldt, including Justice of the Peace township trustee; and a member of the school board. He was a member of the Vicksburg Post No. 72, GAR. Information on his death certificate show parents as "not known". However, one affadavit for his widow's pension application was signed by a brother, Jame J. Andrews, and one affadavit signed by a sister, Margaret M. (Baisley); both residing in Nassau county, NY. The affadavit signed by his brother-in-law, J.C.Redfield, indicates he lived with an uncle, Samuel Andrews, while in Ohio. It is interesting that neither of his sons had children, thus ending this famil line. On my May, 2000, visit to Allen county, I located a two-page biography of William that appears in the book, "History of Allen and Woodson Counties, Kansas". The bio provided information on his parents and siblings; described his involvement in the Civil War; his life in Humboldt; and his family information with wife, Adeline Redfield Andrews.
General Notes (Wife)
[Downing.ged]
Adeline and her husband, William Andrews, were most elusive for two years. Then, during my June, 1999, trip to the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, I discovered a microfilm containing an update of the Redfield genealogy book by John Howard Redfield. The new page provided information that she, too, moved to Humboldt, Kansas, after the Civil War, and she appears on all the census indexes from 1870 to 1900. It also provided her death date and confirmation of her two children. The pension records of William H. Andrews, received August 5, 1999 from the National Archives, confirmed all data. Adeline Redfield Andrews and her family are buried in Mt. Hope cemetery in Humboldt. On July 5, 1999, I retained Beverly Miller, an officer of the Humboldt Genealogical Society, to research the Andrews family. As a result, i was learned that the entire family is buried in Section B, Lot No. 111. On my May, 2000, visit to Humboldt, I located and photographed the grave marker of William, Adeline, and their two sons. They are not far from the various Redfield grave markers. An obituary, in the files, states Adeline died of "congestion of the lungs, following the grip". Most likely pneumonia. The 1901/02 City Directory of Humboldt shows the following entry: "Andrews Wm H (Mrs. Adeline) res NY cor. 10th"
General Notes for Child James Henry Andrews
[Downing.ged]
An obituary obtained from Beverly Miller, Humboldt Genealogical Society, show that James Andrews died in Johnson Hospital in nearby Chanute, KS, and is burie in Mt. Hope cemetery in Humboldt. The family data sheet written by Pearl Redfield, (first cousin) states that at the time of the writing (about 1915), h was living in New York City, NY. James Henry Andrews was an associate editor of the Humboldt "Union" from 192 until shortly before his death. He was also an accomplished musician. The mos interesting and enlightening obituary is in the files. It appears that there were no children of either marriage. On my May, 2000, visit to Kansas, I not only found his grave marker, but in the Iola Library, I found a seven page transcription of an account of the pioneer days of Humboldt that he had recited to Humboldt historian Millie Carroll on July 9, 1937. It describes buildings, early settlers, and the lifestyles of those pioneers in the 1870's. This fascinating history was copie and is in my files.
General Notes for Child Orrin Sylvanus Andrews
[Downing.ged]
Marriage notice: "Hattie Weld, of Greeley, and O.S.Andrews, of Humboldt, married October 26, 1907, in the home of bride's mother, Mrs. A. H. Weld" Early gleanings, vol 2, page 221: Mar 31, 1911...".Mr. & Mrs. O.S.Andrews 1/2 3/4 miles southeast of Greeley, have been going out all winter and cutting tree to be hauled to the sawmill to build a big barn on their place, something which few husbands and wives have done in this day or age, or even in the west. Abou the middle of December they would take dinner with them and go to the timber, day after day. When it was uncomfortably cold, they build a fire in the timber They cut the trees into lumber lengths, he at one end, she at the other of the saw. They loaded them on a wagon and took them to the mill and had the lumber cut into boards. They had 10,000 ft. lumber dut and hauled, which will build the 30 x 40 ft. barn, 20 ft. high. Last Thursday they had a barn raising on th farm, which will soon be finished. They are a great deal prouder of the barn than if they had bought the lumber, besides both enjoy the work. They are not only husband and wife, they are chums and partners in the true sense." The 1915 document written by his first cousin, Pearl Redfield, indicates that a that time Orrin was living near Garnett, Kansas. Orrin was named after his grandfather, Orrin Sylvanus Redfield, who died six weeks before young Orrin was born. On my May, 2000, visit to Humboldt, I located the graves of Orrin and his wife, Harriet. They are buried in the family plot adjacent to the graves of Orrin's parents, William H. Andrews and Adeline Redfield Harris. Orrin Sylvanus Andrews died in Humboldt in 1957 at the fine age of 97. There were no children of this marriage. An obituary obtained from the Humboldt Historical Society is in the hard files.
