SEABROOK, WHITEMARSH BENJAMIN (Whitmarsh) (1793-!855). Son of BENJAMIN SEABROOK (1763-1825); son-in-law of PAUL H AMILTON (1762-1816). Whitemarsh Benjamin Seabrook, born 30 June 1793. was the so n of Benjamin Seabrook and Elizabeth Meggett. He attended t he College of New Jersey (Princeton), graduating in 1812. R eturning home, he studied law and may have practiced law br iefly. However, his major interest was agriculture, and i t was as a cotton planter that he earned his living. Seabro ok resided at Gun Bluff plantation on Edisto Island. Accord ing to an 1824 tax return, he owned 475 acres and 44 slave s in St. John Colleton Parish. The slave schedules for 185 0 listed 90 slaves as his property in St. John Colleton. We ll known in agricultural circles, he frequently urged diver sification and rotation of crops and suggested that a poo r cotton yield was due more to planters' mismanagement an d neglect than to natural elements. Throughout his life, h e made a number of addresses on the subject, many of whic h were published including A Memoir on the 0rigin, Cultivat ion and Uses of Cotton (Charleston, 1844). His zeal and kno wledge was recognized by his peers, and he was a prime move r in the development of the State Agricultural Society (183 9): a member of several agricultural organizations, he serv ed as corresponding secretary of the Agricultural Society o f St. John Colleton (1823), president of the United Agricul tural Society (1826), and vice president (1840) and preside nt (1841-1846) of the State Agricultural Society. Public service for Seabrook was long and varied. Elected t o the House, he represented St. John Colleton in the Twenty -first (1814-1815), Twenty-second (1816-1817), and Twenty-t hird (1818-1819) General Assemblies. On 22 November 1819, h e tendered his resignation, but the House refused to accep t it two days later. While in the House he was a member o f the committees on the judiciary (1814-1815), privileges a nd elections (1816-1819), free schools (1816-1817), inlan d navigation (1816-1817), incorporations (1816-1817), and v acant offices (1818-1819).
