General Notes (Husband)

BIO: The following biography was written by George Calvin LAY's daughter, Mary Alice (LAY) EARNHART, copied and sent to compiler by Eva McCARTY.

"Now we take up George Calvin and wife, Mary Elizabeth HAMILTON... George Calvin LAY was born on March 7, 1876 near Victoria, Tn. and died in his home, Route 2, Whitwell, Tn. Oak Grove Community as the reulsts of a heart attack, at approximately 7:00 A.M. on Feb. 23, 1957. He was buried in the Srdis Methodist Cemetery near Victoria, Tn.

George Calvin LAY was the third child of William Quillin and Louisa Jane BROWN LAY and was one of a family of ten children. He grew to manhood in a very attractive, for its day, large, log house, consisting of six large rooms and an attic.

On December 11, 1901, he was united in holy wedlock to Mary Elizabeth HAMILTON. She was the daughter of Elbert Kesterson HAMILTON and Margaret WEATHERSPOON HAMILTON. Mary Elizabeth HAMILTON LAY was born...

George Calvin LAY attended the common school that was built by his father, where three roads joined in Rankin's Cove about five miles east of Jasper, Tn. He with his brothers and sisters were regular in their attendance in this school. It fell George's duty to carry their lunches to school and this he did, carrying it all together in a half bushel basket through the rain, snow and mud they trudged regularly, as they were trained that schooling was a very important part of life.

As a young man, George went west to find work and earn enough money to come home and marry his beautiful sweetheart, Mary..., however, they were not engaged prior to his trip west. The western trip was a big venture for one so young, who had never been out of state before. His plans were to go to ARIZONA and visit relatives, live there until he could secure work and make other plans from there. He was fortunate in finding work in and near Globe and Phoenix, AZ. and also bought a lot in that area. He kept his heart set on marriage to Mary HAMILTON and their correspondance was regular. After awhile, George became homesick and came back to his parents home in Rankin's Cove. He very soon afterwards became engaged to Mary Elizabeth HAMILTON, and they were married on Dec. 11, 1901.

George and his young bride, Mary, established their home near the William Quillin LAY homestead ...and George worked on his father's farm. Their first hardship...shortly after the birth of thier first child ...Charlie Howard...on a cold, windy winter night near midnight, George and Mary awakened by a roar and loud popping and cracking. Their house was on fire and almost ready to fall in on them. They sprang from bed, grabbing their baby, Charlie, and managed to break and get through a window...the only thing they were able to save... was ... a Singer sewing machine and a pocket watch...This machine always carried the scars...remained in the family home...handed down to their daughter, Lou Celia...

...George and Mary and baby Charles were immediately taken to the home of his parents, ...until they felt they could start out on their own again.

Mary, being the youngest child in the ...HAMILTON family, was to inherit her home far, ... already been deeded to her, ...move into the log cabin which was already on the property and George would work on the farm for her father...until her aged father had them move into the house with him to care for him in his last days.

There was some 105 acres in this farm, some mountain with valuable timber and an ideal cattle farm, however George preferred crop farming...

...In December 1951, George Calvin and wife Mary Elizabeth HAMILTON LAY celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary, with an open house in their large country home...many friends shared in making this occasion a joyous one for them...

George enjoyed good health and was active and youthful looking, for a man of his age, up until three years previous to his death. He was at that time stricken with shingles in the nerves around the right side of his body and was never free from pain that was brought on him by this disease. General Notes (Wife)

[bobspu.ged]

BIO: Concerning her mother, Mary Alice (LAY) EARNHART writes, "...she was the daughter of Elbert Kesterson HAMILTON and Margaret WEATHERSPOON HAMILTON... was born June 2, 1881 and died in her sleep of a heart attack around 4:30 or 5:00 A.M. on Aug. 10, 1961. She was buried in the Sardis Cemetery by the side of her husbands grave... " Mary Alice tells of the fire that destroyed the young couple's home shortly after the birth of their first child, Charles. Kind neighbors, family and friends sheltered the young family until they were able to start again to establish a home of their own. "Mary, being the youngest child in the elbert Kesterson ....family, was to inherit her home far, the place where she was born and reared. Her father had given each of his children a farm. She was so very happy that this was to be the home place which she loved so much. Since this farm had already been deeded to her, she and George decided the only proper thing for them to do was to move into the log cabin which was already on the property and George would work on the farm for her father. This they did till her aged father had them move into the house with him to care for him in his last days. ...The house was a beautiful large colonial home, built when Elbert Kesterson HAMILTON was a young man. Everyone all around looked to this house as being the finest in its day any where in the Sequatchie Valley, Tennessee area. This house is still well preserved... ...George Calvin and Mary Elizabeth had many joys, many hardships and also many anxieties during their years together. Gods protection and guiding hand was always near them. Mary converted after being convection for several days during the noon hour at the Sulphur Springs School. A protracted meeting was in progress at the time in the sulpher springs Church. Mary was baptised and joined the Oak Grove Cumberland Presbyterian Church where she remained a faithful member."

George ... and Nancy ... and thier two children live in the home they own located at 34th East 58th St. Maywood, Ca. a suburb of Los Angeles, Ca. Calvin Jr. is employed by the Chrysler Corporation."

General Notes for Child Mary Alice Lay

[bobspu.ged]

BIO: Compiler first learned of Mary Alice (LAY) EARNHART through correspondance with Eva (WELLS) McCARTY, another descendant of Elisha LAY. Mrs. McCARTY attended a family reunion held by the William Quillin LAY Family in June, 1989. She described the family as "a wonderful, and most friendly people... The whole family received us with open arms. I felt most welcome..." In June, 1997, after learning that compiler was compiling the "Oodles and Oodles of ODLE" Book, Mrs. McCARTY sent copies of the biographical sketches of members of this family, authored by Mary Alice. Mrs. EARNHART's work has been the basis of all data on the descendants of William Q. LAY. Of herself, Mrs. Earnhart has written, "...Alice was taught to read by her grand mother Louisa Jane BROWN LAY at a very early age, and started to school "Subscribtion" term in the Inman grade school at the age of 5. After her marriage to Rev. Dr. Lowell Alva EARNHART, a Cumberland Presbyterian Minister from Dongola, Ill. they established their home in Dongola, where they lived until Jan. 27, 1958. Alice taught school in Southern, Ill., Union and Pulaski Counties for 15 years. Alice has worked closely with her husband who has had full time pastoral work all these years. They are now (1965) living at 425 West Main St., Olney, where her husband is now serving as pastor and has been since Feb. 1, 1958. Moved to a new parsonage at 318 North Kudlwo St. Olney, Ill. May 23 1966, moved back to Dongola, Ill Nov. 1967." The EARNHARTs had no children.

General Notes for Child Sarah Elizabeth Lay

[bobspu.ged]

BIO: Sarah Elizabeth, according to her sister, Mary Alice, was eagerly welcomed as the "baby" of the family of eight children. Because her mother's health was failing, Sarah Elizabeth was cared for by the other members of the family much of the time. She attended the Inman Grade School and Graduated from Whitwell High School in 1941. In March, Sarah went to Washington, D.C. to visit her sister, Celia, and while there, obtained employment with the city Post Office, where she worked until February, 1945. At that time, Sarah went to work for the American Red Cross, then in April, 1950, she left that agency to accept a position with the National Geographic Society. She remained with that employment until July, 1958. Sarah and her husband, J.P. JOLLY, and their two children were residing in a comfortable home, owned by the couple, located at 3501 Allison St., Brentwood, MARYLAND, at the time Mrs. EARNHART wrote this biography (1965).
