General Notes (Husband)



 PHILIP TERRIL HAMMOND, public-spirited citizen minister an d legislator, was born April 3, 1800. Early in life he adop ted the ministry as his life work and became a regularly or dained minister of the Missionary Baptist Church. For man y years he served as pastor of churches in Lancaster, Chest er and Fairfield counties, and occupied a prominent place i n his denomination. For several years previous to his deat h he held no regular charge, but continued to serve in a mi nisterial capacity whenever there was need. At the time o f his death he was Moderator of the Moriah Association.
   In 1850 Philip Terril Hammond was elected to the State L egislature of South Carolina and served several terms. He w as attentive to his duties and untiring in his efforts to p romote the welfare of the people, and to add to the honor o f the State. He was an ardent secessionist, of firm convict ions, though liberal and benevolent in his attitude towar d those who held contrary views. His relations with the peo ple were cordial he was open and candid in the expression o f his opinions upon all questions of public interest, and d id not shrink from the responsibility of directing public s entiment when his position so required. This course, whic h he invariably followed, and which was entirely consisten t with his nature, won for him the confidence of the mass o f the people, and the esteem of those who differed from hi m on matters of public policy.
    In 1858 he was elected judge of the Court of Ordinary t o which office he was reelected in 1862 without oppositio n and held the office until his death. In 1862 he was elect ed to the State Senate and this office he also held until h is death. Each of these positions he filled with satisfacti on. He was regular in the attendance to his duties, his off ice was a model of system and order, and his judicial act s were very generally sustained.
   It is probable that Philip Terril Hammond did not atten d school. He possessed marked native ability and inherite d from a cultured and educated ancestry qualities that fitt ed him for the positions to which he attained.   On March 3 0, 1825, he married Delilah Gilliam Thorn, daughter of Dr . Charles and Delilah (Gilliam) Thorn. Six daughters live d to maturity, namely: Gazzarine Gilliam, married John Cana dy Cauthen; Mary Burford; Delilah Ann Thorn, married Colone l Benjamin F. Tipton, Charlotte Collins, married Nathanie l Hough and and moved to Alabama; Elizabeth Charles, marrie d Washington M. Conners, prominent lawyer of the Lancaste r bar, and Frances Amandine married Edward Meng.     Phili p Terril Hammond was the fourth generation of his family t o live in South Carolina. His father, Samuel B. Hammond, wa s born near Lancaster, South Carolina, and was one of a lar ge family. I-His grandfather, Rawleigh Hammond, married Mar y Burford in North Carolina and removed to South Carolina p revious to 1789. A letter bearing that date, written by Mil dred Burford to her daughter, Mary Hammond, from Wayne Coun ty, North Carolina, is addressed to "Rawleigh Hammond in So uth Carolina. near Camden."
   Rawleigh Hammond was accompanied to South Carolina by hi s parents Captain Samuel and Mary Hammond. Besides Rawleig h they had Samuel Hammond, Jr.; Job Hammond (l750), who mar ried ?? Howard (1750), and reared a large family near Augus ta Georgia; and Charlotte Hammond, who married ?? Collins a nd lived in South Carolina.   A school contract bearing th e date of 1769 Granville County, North Carolina, is evidenc e of the superior educational advantages enjoyed by Captai n Samuel Hammond, who with his sons served in the Revolutio nary War and was closely related to Colonel Leroy Hammond , and his nephew Colonel Samuel Hammond of Virginia and Sou th Carolina.
   It is said that Captain Samuel and Mary Hammond were nam ed in Falls Church, Fairfax, Virginia, and that Samuel wa s the son of Job, Jr., grandson of Job, Sr.     In the deat h of Philip Terril Hammond which occurred July 24, 1864, So uth Carolina lost one of her noblest and most useful citize ns, the church a valued member and his associates a true fr iend.

Francis came to America on the Mayflower with his son John in 1620.
