Told by Olive Odillion (King) Hopgood: When Hansford was growing up, during the Civil War period, people would dig up the foot stones in front of their houses to safe guard what valuables they had. Deserters from both sides would steal anything of value. Since the walkways were a well known place to hide things, Hansfords mother hollowed out a place behind the molding over the front door. One day a soldier came by the house demanding money but, Winnie Ridley (Hampton) King said that "she was just a poor widow woman and had no money to give." Hansford told O.O. (King) Hopgood, "It was very hard to keep himself from not looking up." But the man not getting what he wanted left for the next farm over. Hansford D. King's name can e found on the following TN census: 1860 with his father in Benton County 1870 with his stepfather John G. Blount in Carroll County 1880 & 1900, he was living in Carroll County, TN as the head of his own household
