General Notes for Child Princess Frederika Hanover Of England-Hannover

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Frederika of Hanover, Frederika Luise Thyra Victoria Margarita Sophia Olga Cecilia Isabella Christa, Princess of Hanover, Duchess of Brunswick-Lüneburg 1917-1981 was Queen consort of the Hellenes (Greece) during the reign of her husband King Paul of Greece(1947-1964)

Frederika of Hanover was born in Blankenburg, Harz, Germany to Prince Ernst August of Hanover, Duke of Cumberland and Princess Victoria Luise of Prussia, (a daughter of Kaiser Wilhelm II). Thus Frederika was a granddaughter of Kaiser Wilhelm, and hence great-great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria. Through this relationship she was a distant cousin of Queen Elizabeth II and also of the Duke of Edinburgh. As a descendant of George III she was, at birth, 34th in the line of succession to the British throne although she had no British rank or title.

In 1936 Crown Prince Paul, later Paul I of the Hellenes proposed to her in Berlin when he was there to see the XII Olympiad. Their engagement was announced official on September 28, 1937. On January 9, 1938 they married in Athens, Greece. Paul was the son of Constantine I and Princess Sophie of Prussia, sister of Kaiser Wilhelm. (Therefore he was a great-grandson of Queen Victoria and a second cousin to Frederika)

During the early part of their marriage they resided at Villa Psychiko in the suburbs of Athens. Ten months after their marriage their first child was born on November 2, 1938: Sophia, the future Queen Sofia of Spain. On June 2, 1940 their son and heir, Constantine was born. At the peak of World War II, in April, 1941 the Greek Royal Family had to evacuate to Crete in a Sunderland flying boat.

In exile, King George II and the rest of the Greek Royal Family settled in South Africa. Her Frederika's last child Princess Irene was born on May 11, 1942, the South African leader General Smuts served as her godfather.

Shortly afterwards the German forces attacked Crete. Frederika and her family were forced to evacuate again, setting up a government-in-exile office in London. The family eventually settled in Egypt in February of 1944.

On September 1, 1946 Greece decided in a plebiscite to restore King George to the throne. The Crown Prince and Princess, as Paul and Frederika were now titled, returned to their villa in Psychiko. A year later on April 1, 1947 George II died, Frederika and her husband ascended the throne as King Paul I and Queen Frederika of the Hellenes.

Political instability blamed by critics on communists in Northern Greece led to into civil war. The King and Queen toured Northern Greece under severe security to try appeal for loyalty in the summer of 1947.

The King and queen worked tirelessly for the royalist cause. The Greek Civil War ended in August, 1949. The King & Queen took this opportunity to strengthen the monarchy, they paid official visits to Marshal Tito in Belgrade, the Presidents of Italy in Rome, West Germany, Lebanon, Ethiopia, India, the United Kingdom, and the United States as guest of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. However at home in Greece Frederika was often the target of opposition, because as a girl Frederika had belonged to a Hitler Youth group. While at school in Italy she was said to have been heard defending Nazi Germany and three of her brothers served in the Wehrmacht. Her defenders argued that it would be an unwise parent in 1930s Germany who did not allow their offspring to join the Hitler Youth, and she would not have been the only German child to have, in their naivety, to defended the political system operating there at the time. However in adulthood these things were to be weighed against her, by critics on the left.

Her November 16, 1953 appearance on Life Magazine as America's guest was taken one of the many state visits she paid around the world. She also that year appeared on the cover of Time Magazine. On May 14, 1962 her eldest daughter Sofia married Don Juan Carlos of Spain, (later King Juan Carlos) in Athens.

in 1964 King Paul died, and her son ascended the throne as Constantine II. He married Princess Anne-Marie of Denmark later that year on September 18. Queen Frederika, now Queen Mother attended many royal events including the christenings of her grandchildren in both Spain and Greece. Constantine's clashes with the socialist George Papandreou were blamed by critics for causing the destabilisation that led to a military coup in 1967. After a clumsily organised counter-coup by the King failed, he was forced to flee into exile. In 1973 the Regime of the colonels abolished the Greek Monarchy, an abolition repeated in a democratic plebiscite held in 1974, following the return of democracy.

Queen Frederika died on February 6, 1981 on exile in Madrid during ophthalmic surgery. She was interred at Tatoi (the Royal family's palace and burial ground in Greece). Her son and his family were allowed to attended the service but had to leave immediately after.

George III of Great Britain and Ireland, King of Hanover, Duke of Brunswick Luneburg (r. 1760-1820), who presided over the loss of Britain's American colonies. He was also elector of Hanover (1760-1815) and by decision of the Congress of Vienna, King of Hanover (1815-20). After the dismissal of several ministers who did not satisfy him, the king found a firm supporter in Fredereick North, 2nd Earl of Guilford, Prime Minister from 1770 to 1782. Lord North executed the royal policies that provoked the American Revolution. The unsuccessful conclusion of that protracted conflict forced North to resign, and during the government crisis that followed when three cabinets came and went in less than two years. The King himself was almost induced to abdicate. In 1809 the king became blind. As early as 1765 he had suffered an apparent dementia, and in 1788 his derangement recurred to such a degree that a regency bill was passed, but the king recovered the following year. In 1811 he succumbed hopelessly to this dementia and his son, later George IV, acted as regent for the rest of his reign. or 4 Jun 1738, Norfolk House, St. James Square, London, England? George III was the longest reigning of male British monarchs. Born onJune 4, 1738, he was th e son of Frederick, prince of Wales, and thegrandson of George II. He succeeded his grandfath er in 1760, his fatherhaving died in 1751.

George had high but impractical ideas of kingship. On his accession hesought to rule withou t regard to party, to banish corruption frompolitical practice, and to abandon the Hanoveria n preoccupations of hispredecessors. The chief minister chosen to implement his new system of politics, the third earl of Bute (1713-92), however, was an unpracticedpolitician who merel y succeeded in disrupting the established politics ofthe day without creating a viable altern ative. The result was 10 years ofministerial instability and public controversy, which ende d only in 1770with the appointment of Frederick, Lord North, an able and congenialminister.

Although never an autocratic monarch in the sense that his opponentscontended, George III wa s always a powerful force in politics. He was astrong supporter of the war against America, a nd he viewed the concessionof independence in 1783 with such detestation that he consideredab dicating his throne. At the same time he fought a bitter personal feudwith the Whig leader Ch arles James Fox, and his personal interventionbrought the fall of the Fox-North ministry in 1 783. He then found anotherminister, William Pitt, the Younger, who suited him. Even as late a s 1801he preferred, however, to force Pitt to resign as prime minister ratherthan permit Cath olic Emancipation, a measure that he interpreted ascontrary to his coronation oath to uphol d the Church of England.

After 1801 George III was increasingly incapacitated by an illness, sometimes identified as po rphyria, that caused blindness and senility. His recurring bouts of insanity became a politica l problem and ultimatelycompelled him to submit to the establishment of a formal Regency in 1 811.The regent was his oldest son, the future George IV, one of 15 childrenborne him by his w ife, Charlotte Sophia of Mecklenburg-Strelitz.

George III was bitterly criticized by Whig historians of his own andlater days. But 20th-cent ury scholarship has somewhat redressed thebalance, and he is now seen as a strong-minded bu t public-spiritedmonarch who perhaps ascended the throne at an overly young andimpressionabl e age. He learned quickly, however, and developed into ashrewd and sensible statesman, althou gh one of conservative views. To thecourt he brought a sense of public duty and private moral ity that provedpopular in a society already being transformed by the evangelicalrevival. He s howed considerable interest in agricultural improvement andwas an avid collector of painting s and books. The best loved of theHanoverian rulers, he enjoyed a personal reputation that st ood his housein good stead during the disastrous reign of his son George. George IIIdied on J an. 29, 1820.

General Notes (Husband)

PAUL I (1901-1964) was king of Greece from 1947 to 1964. He succeeded his brother, George II, as king during a civil war between Greek Communists and people who supported the monarchy. With his wife, Queen Frederika, Paul tried to make the Greek monarchy a protector of democracy and a supporter of all classes of Greek society. From 1917 to 1920, Paul lived in exile with his father, King Constantine I. From 1923 to 1935 and from 1941 to 1946, he lived in exile again, this time with George II. Paul was born in Athens, and was trained as a naval officer.

Reign: 1947-64. During most of WW II, when Greece was under German occupation, he was with the Greek government-in-exile in London and Cairo. From Cairo, he broadcast messages to the Greek people. He returned to Greece in 1946 and succeeded to the throne in 1947, on the death of his brother, King George II.

General Notes (Wife)

General Notes (Husband)

1 NAME George /Lewis/ 1 UPDA 2 DATE 1698 2 PLAC 2nd Elector of Hanover

The son of the first Elector of Hanover, Ernest Augustus, by Sophia, daughter of Frederick, Elector of Palatine, and grand-daughter of James 1, he inherited the throne through his mother following the Act of Succession of 1701 which conferred the succession on her heirs.House of Hanover Reigned 1714-1727,

GEORGE I (1660-1727) of Great Britain became king when his distant cousin Queen Anne died in 1714. After Anne's last surviving child had died in 1700, many people claimed that only her half brother James Francis Edward Stuart, a Roman Catholic and son of King James II, had the right to succeed her. In 1701, however, Parliament passed an Act of Settlement that made sure that no Catholic would become monarch. The act provided that Princess Sophia, a Protestant, would succeed Anne as ruler of England unless Anne had another child. Sophia was a granddaughter of King James I of England and electress of the German territory of Hanover (see HANOVER). Her son George became heir to the throne after her death in June 1714 and became king after Anne's death in August. George was born in the city of Hanover. He became elector of the territory of Hanover in 1698.

George was ignorant of British politics and did not speak English well. But he kept in close touch with his ministers, of whom the most famous was Sir Robert Walpole (see WALPOLE, SIR ROBERT). The two most dramatic events of George's reign were the Jacobite rebellion of 1715, which attempted to restore the Stuart family as rulers of Great Britain, and the bursting of the "South Sea Bubble," a great financial scandal, in 1720.

Update: from Queen's Official Web Site 8/10/97.

The Hanoverians

George I

As Sophia, Electress of Hanover, had died two
months before Queen Anne (who died in 1714),
Sophia's eldest son George, Elector of Hanover
inherited the throne under the Act of Settlement
(there were some 50 Roman Catholic relatives with
stronger claims). His claim was challenged by
James Stuart, Roman Catholic son of James II,
who landed in Scotland in 1715, following a rising
of Scottish clans on his behalf; this was
unsuccessful and he soon withdrew. George I
(reigned 1714-27) spoke German and French and
a little English; he regularly visited Hanover to fulfil
his duties there. Family tensions (George
imprisoned his wife in 1694) and political intrigue
(opposition gathered round the Prince of Wales)
led to differences and intense dislike between
George and his son, George. In 1719 and 1720,
and during most of the king's absences in Hanover,
power was delegated to a Regency Council and
not to the Prince of Wales.

Unfamiliar with the customs of the country, George
was dependent on his ministers - the Whigs
dominated Parliament during his reign. After the
South Sea Bubble crisis of 1720 (when the South
Sea Company, with heavy government and royal
investments, crashed), Robert Walpole took over.
The most able of George's ministers, and known as
the first 'Prime Minister', Walpole's was the longest
running administration in British history (1721-42).
George died in 1727, during a visit to Hanover.

Additional Information:

George I was born and raised in Germany. He was the son of Ernest, the elector of Hanover (one of the handful of men who had the right to cast a vote for the German Emperor) and Sophia, the granddaughter of James I. He was raised in the German Hanoverian court, and married a German wife (Sophia the Princess of Zelle), and inherited the throne of England through a technicality -- Queen Anne had no children and no heirs, and the Parliament considered George I a better alternative than James Edward Stuart, who was next in line. He was thoroughly German and had absolutely no interest in learning English or about the English culture. In fact, he spent more than half his reign in his beloved Hanover. This did not bode well for his popularity with the British.

George brought a host of German attendants with him to England. The attendants appear to have had one simple attitude -- get as rich as possible as quickly as possible. George also had two mistresses come with him: Ehrengard ("the maypole") and Charlotte ("the elephant"). His wife, ironically, was in prison for adultery, so did not accompany him.

George I's reign created an English government that was able to run indepently of the king. Most notably, the office of prime minister was created during this time.

During his reign, a group of Scots stormed London in support of James Edward Stuart, "The Old Pretender." However, by the time James arrived, the revolt had already been crushed, and the French king (who had promised support) did not show up at all.

George I was instrumental in negotiating a complex set of alliances throughout Europe, and he kept England out of war for his entire reign. England would not have another war until George II declared war on Spain in 1739.

George and his son, who would become George II, despised one another. When George left the country for one of his frequent trips to Hanover, he preferred to leave the government in the hands of his ministers in preference to his son. George II remained the heir, however, and took over the government when his father died in 1727.

General Notes (Husband)

1 UPDA 2 DATE 11 OCT 1727 2 PLAC Acceded:

House of Hanover. 23 Jun 1727 > 25 Oct 1760 = reign of George II

George II

George II (reigned 1727-60), at the age of 60, was
the last British sovereign to fight alongside his
soldiers, at the Battle of Dettingen in 1743 in
Germany, against the French. Like his father, for
much of his reign George's political options were
limited by the strength of the Jacobite cause (James
Stuart the Old Pretender, and then his son, Charles
Edward Stuart), with which many of the Tories
were linked. George's reign was threatened in 1745
when Charles Edward Stuart, the Young
Pretender, landed in Scotland. After some initial
success (which led to the popularity of the national
anthem in its current form becoming popular among
the Hanoverian loyalists), Charles was defeated at
the Battle of Culloden in April 1746 and the
Jacobite threat was over.

The foundations of the industrial revolution were
laid during George's reign, with new levels of
production in industries such as coal and
shipbuilding and also in agriculture, together with a
rapid rise in population. Overseas, trade was
boosted by successes such as Clive's victories in
India at Arcot (1751) and Plassey (1757) which
placed Madras and Bengal under British control,
and Wolfe's capture of French-held Quebec in
1759 (part of a successful campaign which
transferred Canada with its wealthy trade in fish
and fur from Bourbon to British rule).

As the country prospered and George's reign
lengthened, George's early unpopularity (he did not
travel far in England, and much preferred Hanover)
changed into a general respect. The king's eldest
son, Frederick, died in 1751. George's grandson
therefore inherited the throne, on George's death in
1760.

Additional Information:

George II grew up in his father's courts at Hanover but, unlike his father, adapted himself much more easily to English society. He had an easy succession, becoming the king of England and Hanover with his father's death in 1727. He was an only child.

George despised his father and was in turn despised by his son, Frederick. His passions were the military, music, and (strangely for a king) his wife. He was married to Caroline of Anspach. He had three sons and five daughters, all of them legitimate. His wife was a great asset to him politically, as she revived the waning English court life, was very intelligent, and was an avid supporter of Prime Minister Robert Walpole.

Walpole strived for years to keep George II from going to war, but eventually George won out and declared war on the Spanish in 1739. The war eventually became integrated with the war of Austrian succession and lasted for several years. George also dealt with a Jacobite uprising during his reign, in which the young pretender (Charles Edward Stuart) marched with a group of Scottish rebels toward London. The uprising was crushed, Charles escaped to France, and the Scottish were humiliated and massacred by the fed-up English.

George II was the last king to personally lead his troops into battle.

George was prone to temper tantrums and intolerance of those who disagreed with him but, thanks to the prudence of Robert Walpole, led quite a successful government. With his death he passed the throne onto his grandson, George III.
