This is correspondence from a few doubtful people?:

Hi, Sandy,

That sounds like very complete information on this family. Can you tell me what your source s are? I need to include that detail in my GEDCOM and also my update of the Cornell genealog y of Prentiss Glazier, i.e.,

Gifford, Sandy [Corr. #], census recs., cemetery recs.

I don't need copies of your sources but want to list what they are. In that way, anyone who h appens to be related to you will know where the data came from. Consider that we have lost s o much good information because the genealogists before us failed to say where they got what . Most of us today know we can't get away with that, or our research will not be taken serio usly.

My source said that Jocob married a Mary ___.. Any chance that Drusilla had that as a middl e name, or she was a second wife? There is a considerable gap between the last two childre n where Jacob could have remarried. As you provided her full name, I have to assume you kno w a personal interest in it. I'm also quite impressed that you bothered to collect spouses a nd dates for all family members rather than just your own personal line. This enhances you r opportunity to find cousins.

My information on this family came from two correspondents between 10 and 20 years ago. I ha ve no idea if they are still living. They are:

1. McClanahan, Mrs. Betty

2. Cornell, Margaret -- will of Benjamin Cornell of Frederick Co., MD; land recs. of Frederic k Co.; tombstones of Harney, MD, family recs.

It's my suspicion that Betty's information may have come originally from Margaret. In a fe w places, this was indicated. I have probably updated my GEDCOM relative to the one posted a t my web site. If you need more detail on what I have from Margaret, I can look in her correspondence file. I keep everything. I don't have their addresses real handy at the mome nt but will be glad to look them up if they are of interest to you. If I recall correctly, B etty was in Missouri, and Margaret was in Ohio. Both were quite generous with their informat ion and were obviously very nice ladies. Am pretty sure I can also tell you how they are con nected to the family of Smith and Benjamin Cornell.

Tom Cornell

This info. from M. Fenimore at Gencircles:

Occupation: Farmer 1884 Jefferson County, Iowa Census: 1854 Jackson County, Oregon

Individual: from Grandma Opha Peter's notes) He came to Iowa in 1836 and settled near Fairfield. He cross ed the plains with the John Dyer Wagon Train which left Fairfield, Iowa on 27 April 1852. Th e trip was 2700 miles long. Elias took with him a pack, his booie knife located in his boot , and a mule named "Old Abe". The following was written by Hiram Ogden who was 22 years old w hen the wagon train left Fairfield "The Bierly outfit crossed the Missouri River at Council B luffs to where Omaha, Nebraska is today. They train then followed up the Platte River to For t Laramie, then to the Black Hills in Sough Dakota. They then went west to Howes Fork of th e Bear River to the fork where the Oregon bound people would turn towards Oregon, and the Cal ifornia bound would turn towards California. The train then headed to the Snake River then t o American Falls coming out near where Boise, Idaho is today. The went west to Grand Round i n Eastern Oregon to the Umatilla/Pendleton area. The train went down the John Day River to the Deschutes River then down to the Dalles via the Columbia River. After getting around th e falls they continued on down to Portland, Oregon arriving six months to the day the train d eparted Iowa." When Elias left he stopped at the home of the Wallaces family who lived several miles away. Elias told one daughter that he was going out west but was coming back. H e asked the young girl if she would wait for him of which she said she would. Elias returne d twenty years later and did find the young girl named Sarah Ann Wallace whom he married. H e found life in "God's Country" exciting and filled with many adventures. But he returned t o Iowa with little more than a wealth of experiences. Edna wrote that when she saw her grandf ather for the last time when she was about four years old. Elias had a long white beard that he stu ffed into his shirt waist. Elias liked to tell stories which no ones knows as to the validit y of them. Elias told his wife the following who then told her children that when Elias was o ut west on the Pacific ocean he and two other men were in a ship wreck. All three shaved jus t before abandoning the vessel and then threw their razors overboard. The three men lowered t hemselves over the side of the ship into a small row boat. They all were filled with fear an d desperation as they reached the row boat climbing in. One of the gents was scared and laye d in the bottom of the boat crying as he was resigned to his fate. Elias and the other man to ok turns rowing the boat. During the night they used the North Star as a guide and the sun du ring the day heading for the coast of California. Several days later they were cold, hungry a nd thirsty. They were welcomed by a group of men who had just finished their dinner aroun d a bonfire. the dinner consisted of a roast dog which they offered what was left to Elias an d the other two. They at the entails. On a visit to his brother, Eli, near Mouton, Iowa, he m et a shy Scotch lassie who was to become his bride, Sarah Ann Wallace. (She was born just one year bef ore Grampa left for the gold fields.) They had five children.

Elias is found in the 1854 Federal Census as living in Jackson Co, Oregon on the Auditors Copy, page 002, in the Oregon 1851-1859 Census Database

Letter from Aunt Edna Flack, 6/14/97: "My idea of a book that I planned to write was that o f my grandfather's trip out west with a wagon train of people on his trusty old mule named Ab e." Elias upon returning home from being away at work would gather his children around and the n would take change from his pocket and tell them to chose the piece they wanted.

Before Elias death he had lived with his daughter Sarah and then for the last 4-5 years prec eding his death he lived in the County Home as he was totally blind and in good health. 1850 Census Index for Fairfield, Jefferson, Iowa lists Elias, Jonathan, and Hannah.Keosaqu a Republican Newspaper, Thursday, Nov 21, 1918.

General Notes for Child Mary Jane Ankrom

[1735328.ged]

[BeamandWilson.FTW]

From the notes of M. Fenimore:

Burial: 22 Jun 1968 Portland, Multnomah, Oregon Reference: 23 Residence: a rental home 24 Dec 1899 Central Point, Oregon SSAN: Portland, Multnomah, Oregon

Individual: Mary had a bit of wisdom about her. She told her granddaughter Patsy Stowell that if she eve r lived in a home where the house plants would not live in that the home should be vacated an d not lived in. Mary had a Parakeet for a pet. One day as Mary was swatting a fly with a news paper her Parakeet had the misfortune of taking off on a in house flight and flew into the pa th of the swinging newspaper. He did not survive the ordeal. Mary tried to resuscitate her pe t and cried a lot of tears over his accidental demise. Mary lived in the St. Johns section o f Portland, Oregon until just a few years before her death when she moved into a nursing home . Mary kept a log of every home she and her family lived in from October 1893 in Cincinnati , Iowa until January 1934 in Portland, Oregon. One week after marriage Mary started working a s a housekeeper on a farm owned by people named Monfort in Cincinnati, Iowa. Mary chooses t o be poetic with her last name. During the time she was dating Charles she signed her letter s as Mary E. J. Ankrim. Mary also wrote the following poem to Charles on 15 May 1893 when she was living in Glasgow , Iowa :"Remember me when death Shall close my eyelids In their last response When the evening breezes Shall gently wave the grass O're your true friends grave."

Letter from Edna Flack 11/2/97:

"John and Mary Ankrom, Mother's brother and sister, went to Oregon when my mother [Sarah] wa s young. Mary married a Hayes. She had eleven children and said if she ever had another one s he would give it away......And she did.....Rex, her last. I don't know the rest of the story. " The "rest of the story" is as follows: Mary was quite tired of children when Dave (Rex) wa s born and Mary worked a deal out with a Lue and Maddie Miller to take Dave at birth and rais e him. Mary made this decision without consulting Charles. Dave was raised by the Millers unt il he was six years old at which time they divorced. Dave was than sent to live with his sist er Grace until Mary and Charles came and took him home again.

Mary Jane Ankrom and Charlie Hayes were married in 1893, just a few weeks before her 16th bir thday. Charlie was 25. At that time he had a barber shop. Mary Jane had been "hiring out", do ing housework and helping with children at neighboring farms, earning $1.50 per week.. Afte r their marriage they "went to housekeeping on Monfort's farm". This means they set up their household together.

The following is verbatim from the log that Mary Jane kept throughout her life up until 1934 of all the places they lived during their marriage:

"C.B. Hayes and Mary Ankrim (sic) were united in marriage A.D. August 1, 1893 at Fairfield, J efferson County, Iowa by Rev. G. W. Mapes, gospel minister. Time 15 minutes till 3 PM. Went t o housekeeping August 8 on Monfort's farm.

This info.
